RIVERCENTER INC. & the Cultural Economy: Aside from providing great entertainment, performance space, and support services for several area arts organizations, RiverCenter plays an important role in our local economy. As calculated by the Americans for the Arts Economic Impact Calculator based upon an Annual Budget of $2,760,000 RiverCenter activities result in over $4.5 million in economic activity. This supports 153 full time equivalent jobs and represents over $3.5 million in local household income. RIVERCENTER INC. & Tourism: RiverCenter supports conferences, meetings, productions, and other programs that attract tourists to our community for multiple days. Those visitors dine in area restaurants and support other retail businesses in the County during their visit. The entire local economy wins. Since our performing arts center attracts tourists to the city, stands as a symbol of high culture, improves the community’s quality of life, and aids businesses when attracting talent to the region, RiverCenter receives a subsidy from the hotel/motel tax. The revenue is derived from taxes paid by visitors staying in area hotels or motels located within Muscogee County. These funds are exclusively dedicated to the maintenance, utilities, and upgrades necessary to keep the facility competitive and attractive for the city. Area residents do not fund this tax but they reap the benefits of having their very own performing arts center in Columbus. RIVERCENTER INC. & the Next Generation: RiverCenter provides extensive educational programming both in and outside of RiverCenter for area K-12 public schools. Activities include teacher workshops, study aids, pre and post visit lesson plans, subsidized tickets and transportation to low income schools, and access to the arts for over 20,000 students. RIVERCENTER INC. & Facility Partners: Through significant in-kind contributions RiverCenter supports the activities and performances of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra and the Youth Orchestra of Greater Columbus. Both are resident companies within the Center. In addition, RiverCenter’s south wing is filled with the Schwob School of Music. Through this collaboration both organizations serve the community in uniquely different ways that would ordinarily not be possible. This synergy brings the university and our nonprofit together to create vibrancy and variety in Uptown.

FROM THE D I R EC TOR Welcome to the 2017-2018 RiverCenter Experience! Whether you are joining us for the first time or are a regular attendee, we are thrilled that you have joined us! This season we continue programs that are certain to delight, inspire and amaze. Family matinee performances for the very young and the young at heart are on tap together with stories of romance told in music, dance and the spoken word. Norman S. Easterbrook Experience the Broadway musical ELF with Executive Director your family. Perhaps a rock concert with Classic Albums Live is more your speed. On Valentine’s Day enjoy dinner and comedy with your sweetheart or just a ladies night. We are so pleased to be hosting the Mystical Arts of Tibet in the spring. Patrons can see the monks design a sand mandala in the RiverCenter lobby! We will offer expanded Arts Education this season too. All part of our commitment to provide opportunities for school students to engage in the live performing arts, not just at RiverCenter but through training teachers in ways that they can use the performing arts each day in the classroom. WHO’S WHO in the CAST MILES PORTEK (Host) Miles is a native Australian. Born in Sydney he's had a rambling journey through time and space. From improvised comedy, to stand up, Miles currently believes the best way to fix the world is through the inspiration and empowerment of children, because really, if we don't invest in that there's no point living. He's been an avid volunteer in 826NYC, a creative writing and homework support centre in Brooklyn New York, and at the Martian Embassy in Sydney. When he's not hosting fantastic dinosaur puppet shows he's normally working in a bar, a sound booth or swimming somewhere. Of course none of this matters, because there's no point unless we're inspiring children or helping them create something incredible, so stop reading this and get out and do that. JOE AHOLT (Puppeteer) studied theatre arts performance at the University of Texas Arlington. He is excited to be part of his first tour with Erth's Dinosaur Zoo Live. Other theatre credits include Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing (Fort Worth Theatre), Prince Philip in The Lion in Winter (Theatre Rocks!), Rhinoceros in The Island of Doctor Moreau (Hip Pocket Theatre), and Pee-Wee Reese in the Dallas Children's Theater's national tour of Most Valuable Player: The Jackie Robinson Story. ERYN MALAFRONTE (Puppeteer) is thrilled to be performing in Erth’s Dinosaur Zoo Live, reuniting her love of puppets and dinosaurs again! Her most recent credits include: Urinetown The Musical (Pennywise), and Chamber Theater’s national tours of ‘Encore!!’ and ‘Eureka!’ Wholehearted thanks to her parents, Miron, this company, and of course my brother Brendan, and Kermit the frog for getting me interested in puppets in the first place!

MIRON GUSSO (Puppeteer) He celebrates his 6th year as a T-Rex with the company. Born in Moscow, Miron's mother introduced him to Puppetry at the age of 8 and he's been hooked ever since. An alumnus of the University of Connecticut’s Puppetry Arts Graduate Program, Miron has also been seen as a dinosaur on Radiolab’s live show “Apocolyptical” which toured in 2013, and at Field Station: Dinosaurs (NJ). Other favorite credits include The Center for Puppetry Arts (GA), and Doc Brown at Universal Studios Japan, Osaka. www.mirongusso.com SCOTT WRIGHT (Artistic Director) Scott is the co-founder and Artistic Director of Erth Visual & Physical Inc. For over twenty-five years Erth’s puppetry based theatrical productions and innovative community projects have challenged and inspired audiences across the world, driven by a founding interest in natural history, indigenous folklore, sociology and urban mythology. Scott has directed the majority of Erth’s productions, which now tour year-round internationally, and have featured in all major Australian arts festivals, and today the company is recognized internationally as an innovator of physical and visual theatre, and a creator of brave, unbridled work for children. SHARON KERR (Associate Director) Sharon is Executive Director and a founding member of Erth. Originally trained as a school teacher majoring in drama, Sharon has much performance experience. Prior to helping form Erth, she spent five years in contemporary dance theater with empha¬sis on improvisational movement. Puppetry became a natural extension of this. Her roles within Erth are many and varied. Contributing to creative and performance direction, Sharon continues to perform whenever 33

she can. Sharon has also steered the company for many years as its key administrator. Some of her per¬formance highlights include her aerial har¬ness and flying work memorable amongst these are from atop the sails of the Sydney Opera House, the spire of St. Paul’s Cathedral in Melbourne and from the 30th floor of the Nge Ann skyscraper in Singapore. STEVE HOWARTH (Designer) As a founding and fulltime member of Erth Visual & Physical, Inc., Steve designs for most of the company’s productions and external com-missions. From the Erth Studio/Workshop he supervises a team of artists in creating the puppets, sets, props, costumes that are on constant tour around the globe. The puppets often take the form of teeth-gnashing beasts and inflatable monsters that are the foundation of Dinosaur Zoo. Steve also mentors design students from tertiary institutions and assists emerging makers in the implementation of their respective crafts. BRYONY ANDERSON (Specialist Puppet Design) Bryony is a designer, maker, artist and wannabe scientist based in the forested hills of NSW. Her puppets and constructions for visual performance have toured nationally and internationally with many Australian circus, puppetry, visual performance and theatre companies, as well as appearing in museums, festivals and documentaries. Solo exhibitions have ranged from interactive puppetry installations and handmade projection machinery to intricate illustration, all investigating a salvaged aesthetic. She has conducted community workshops in the Central Desert, rural Victoria, Western Sydney, and across the Mid North Coast of NSW. In 2011 she began working with her local community to seed a creative industry of skilled artisans making high calibre work from frugal resources. A three-year project was spawned that drew in artists, composers, scientists and over 1200 community participants, and resulted in an intricately detailed forest installation made entirely from stuff that was headed to landfill. The Frugal Forest is now on tour. frugalforest.oneoffmakery.net.au PHIL DOWNING (Composer) Phil has a distinct history working with interactive multimedia. After years spent performing music, Phil set about reinventing his means of expression through music, by creating unique and obscure musical instruments. This inspiration has led to the creation of numer¬ous soundtracks for theatrical productions (1999–2012). Delivery of video and imagery being an obvious progression, Phil has also worked with various technologies to incor¬porate physical interaction (with performers and audience members) into installations and performances, utilizing technologies such as infra-red, sonar and pressure sensors, Arduino programmable circuit boards and Kinect sen¬sors. Working with Erth, Phil has developed systems for automated delivery of sound, light and visual effects, 34

and has designed stand-alone sound systems for their various creature puppets. “This one’s going to be a mad professor!” his grandma proclaimed upon his birth.…She was possibly correct! DEBORAH BARR (General Manager) has worked as a production and stage manager for dance, theatre, opera and ceremonial events for numerous companies and producing entities. She worked for many years as Events Manager at the University of Texas at Austin and as a Company Manager on tour, and welcomes the opportunity to manage dinosaurs. MICHAEL GLOVER (Tour Manager) Michael is a navy veteran with a B.A. in Design and Technology for the Theatre from San Diego State University. He was the Fall Tour Manager for Erth's Dinosaur Zoo Live in 2016. That being his first tour, he absolutely fell in love with touring, this show, and those involved. Michael is honored and thrilled to join the company once again and to make the magic of Erth’s Dinosaur Zoo come to life. B I O GRAP HI ES E LEANOR CARTER | OR GAN Eleanor Carter is a second-year Music student at Clare College where she holds the post of the Sir William McKie Senior Organ Scholar: the first ever female organ scholar in Clare College’s history. Eleanor grew up in Guildford attending Tormead School as a music scholar. She started learning the organ at the age of nine, quickly going on to study with Katherine DienesWilliams at Guildford Cathedral. She latterly attended the Junior Department of the Royal Academy of Music where she studied organ with Anne Marsden Thomas and Peter Holder, with cello as her second study. She regularly accompanies services at various local churches, and has had opportunities to play at Evensong in Canterbury and Chichester Cathedrals. Eleanor has also given organ recitals at various venues, such as St. Lawrence Jewry in London, and has participated in local and county festivals. Eleanor is also a cellist and pianist, particularly enjoying chamber music, she has played with the National Youth Chamber Orchestra, and the International Chamber Music Academy for several years. Through this ensemble playing she has performed at venues such as the Wigmore Hall, Royal Albert Hall and the Cadogan Hall. This year, Eleanor is also accompanying the King’s Voices choir of King’s College, Cambridge.

A S HLEY C HOW | ORG AN Ashley Chow is the Junior Organ Scholar at Clare College, where he is reading Natural Sciences. He grew up in Hong Kong and started playing the piano and violin at the age of six. Before Cambridge, he studied at Harrow School as a music scholar, where he started playing the organ and took lessons with Martin Singleton. There he assisted choir rehearsals, performed as a soloist and regularly accompanied school services. At Harrow, Ashley enjoyed being a member of Harrow’s orchestras and chamber groups, performing works such as Orff’s Carmina Burana and Walton’s Belshazzar’s Feast. He has had the opportunity to perform at St John’s Smith Square, Winchester Cathedral and Royal Albert Hall in the UK and in Bangkok, Beijing and Hong Kong whilst on tour with the orchestra.

G R AHAM RO SS | D I RE CTOR Graham Ross has established an exceptional reputation as a sought-after conductor and composer of a very broad range of repertoire. He is cofounder and Principal Conductor of The Dmitri Ensemble and Director of Music and Fellow of Clare College, Cambridge, with whom his performances around the world and his extensive discography have earned consistently high praise. In demand as a regular guest conductor of other ensembles in the UK and abroad, recent collaborations have included London Mozart Players, BBC Singers, Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, Aurora Orchestra, Purcell School, Australian Chamber Orchestra and Aalborg Symfoniorkester. In the 2017/18 season he makes return invitations to Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Salomon Orchestra, Covent Garden Chamber Orchestra and RCM Symphony Orchestra, conducts Haydn The Seasons in Provence and Brittenâ€™s War Requiem at the Barbican, and makes his conducting debuts with BBC Concert Orchestra and London Philharmonic Orchestra. At the age of 25 he made his BBC Proms and Glyndebourne debuts, with other opera work taking him to Jerusalem, London, Aldeburgh and Provence. He has conducted and recorded world premiĂ¨res of a wide spectrum of composers, including James MacMillan, Judith Bingham, Giles Swayne, Vaughan Williams, Imogen Holst, Nico Muhly, Brett Dean, Lydia Kakabadse and Matthew Martin. Since 2011 he has recorded exclusively for Harmonia Mundi USA, his latest recordings including J. S. Bach Reformation cantatas with the Choir of Clare College and Clare Baroque, and the Shostakovich/Barshai Chamber Symphonies with The Dmitri Ensemble. As a composer commissions have included BBC Concert Orchestra, City of London Sinfonia, National Youth Choir of Great Britain, Covent Garden Chamber Orchestra, O Duo, Park Lane Group, and the Solstice Quartet. As an animateur and through outreach work he has conducted projects in Tower Hamlets, Wigmore Hall, English National Opera and Glyndebourne Festival Opera, and overseas in Nigeria, Palestine, across Europe and the USA. He is Artistic Director of Fringe in the Fen, a music and arts festival in Fenstanton, Cambridgeshire raising funds for Macmillan Cancer Support. He is a regular contibutor on BBC Radio. He studied music at Clare College, Cambridge and conducting at the Royal College of Music, London. In addition to its primary function of leading services three times a week in the College chapel, the Choir keeps an active schedule recording, broadcasting, and performing. Former directors have included John Rutter and Timothy Brown. Under the direction of Graham Ross, Director of Music since 2010, it has been praised for its consistently ‘thrilling’ and ‘outstanding’ performances worldwide. The Choir’s 2017/18 season includes Handel’s Messiah with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Mozart’s Requiem with the Manchester Camerata in Bridgewater Hall, concert appearances across the UK in London, Cambridge, Leeds, Buckinghamshire, Cheshire, Suffolk and Dorset, and overseas at St Peter’s Basilica in Rome, Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, and across the United States of America, France, Malta and Gozo. In 2017 the Choir staged a major project to mark the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, performing eight Bach Cantatas with instrumentalists from the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment Experience, European Union Baroque Orchestra, Royal Academy of Music Baroque Soloists, Clare Baroque, and undergraduates from across Cambridge University, culminating in a recording for Harmonia Mundi released earlier in 2017. In addition to live performances, the Choir has produced an impressive discography of more than forty recordings. Their recordings under Graham Ross on the Harmonia Mundi USA label have been released to great critical acclaim, earning praise for ‘impeccable ensemble’ and ‘immaculate performances’, a Le Choix de France Musique and a Diapason d’Or award, Editor’s Choice in Gramophone and BBC Music Magazine, and garnering a Gramophone Award nomination. The Choir’s series of Music for the Church Year has received numerous 5 star reviews in the national and international press. The Choir’s latest recordings are Pange lingua: Music for Corpus Christi and Reformation 500, both released in 2017. CONDUCTOR William Bullock, conductor, brings forty-nine years of conducting and administrative experience to his work with Cantus Columbus. In 2000 he retired as professor emeritus from Columbus State University’s Schwob School of Music, where he had served as coordinator of music studies and director of choral activities. Previously he held similar positions at the University of Southern Mississippi and Tarrant County College (Fort Worth). His BME, MM and Ph.D. degrees are from Florida State University. He recently retired as Executive Director of RiverCenter for the Performing Arts. Bill has conducted and adjudicated choruses in seven south and southwestern states, conducted concert tours of Mexico and Eastern and Western Europe, and led study tours of Scandinavia and Australia. He has participated in international choral conferences in Vienna, Sydney, and Vancouver, founded the Six Flags over Texas Choral Festival, and served as Mississippi state president of the American Choral Directors Association, executive director of Southeastern Music Center, and choirmaster for Methodist and Episcopal churches. A choral literature authority, Bill has published journal articles, musical editions and arrangements, a book on the cantatas of J. S. Bach, and a well-received edition of the Brahms Requiem that includes his own modern, prosodic translation. A recipient of several awards, he is a member of Pi Kappa Lambda, Phi Kappa Phi, and various professional organizations (including the American Choral Directors Association) and is listed in biographical publications, including The New International Who’s Who in Music. 74

CANTUS COLUMBUS Cantus Columbus, a professional chorus, was founded in 2000 by Dr. William J. Bullock. It presented its inaugural concert in the spring of that year at the Springer Opera House and that December inaugurated its annual series of Christmas concerts at Columbus’ Saint Luke United Methodist Church. The concerts of its subsequent seasons have been performed at RiverCenter for the Performing Arts, one each in Studio Theatre and Bill Heard Theatre, the rest in Legacy Hall. The group has occasionally performed run-out concerts in LaGrange and Savannah. Made up of singers from Columbus and the surrounding areas, the chorus is proud of its performance standards and the quality and variety of its literature. Its annual Christmas concert, A Cantus Christmas, which draws sell-out crowds, recounts the Christmas story with music of master composers and familiar audience carols. Frequently the chorus also presents a spring concert. Except for one program of Psalm settings performed at First Baptist Church of Columbus, these concerts have presented lighter works in RiverCenter’s Legacy Hall. Recent spring programs have been joint presentations with the Vega Quartet and have featured arrangements of the music of Cole Porter, Rodgers & Hart, George & Ira Gershwin, and Jerome Kern and a diversity of “serenades” by a variety of composers. Now a resident performing ensemble at RiverCenter for the Performing Arts, the chorus is supported by grants, contributions, concert sponsors, and ticket sales. The group rehearses in Columbus at the Schwob School of Music and at St. Thomas Episcopal Church and First Baptist Church. STRING QUARTET The Vega Quartet, Quartet-in-Residence at Emory University, is cultivating a new generation of chamber music lovers through dynamic performances and innovative community engagement. The New York Times raved that “[the Quartet’s] playing had a kind of clean intoxication to it, pulling the listener along…the musicians took real risks in their music making” and the Los Angeles Times praised the Quartet’s “triumphant L.A. debut.” The ensemble concertizes both nationally and internationally, most recently in Baltimore, Chicago, Nashville, Sacramento, Berlin, San Miguel, and at the Brahmssaal in Vienna’s Musikverein. The Quartet has become a Columbus, Georgia favorite through a decade of collaborations with Cantus Columbus. That collaboration includes a previous solo appearance on the Cantus Christmas series, a concert of “serenades” by a diversity of composers, and five concerts featuring compositions by Cole Porter, Rodgers & Hart, George & Ira Gershwin, and Jerome Kern. The Vega Quartet has won numerous international awards, including major ones at the Bordeaux String Quartet Competition, the Coleman Chamber Ensemble Competition, the Carmel Chamber Music Competition, and the National Society of Arts and Letters String Quartet Competition. The Quartet tours throughout Asia, Europe and North America and has appeared at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Hall and Zankel Hall, at Bargemusic (New York City’s floating concert hall), and at Duke Hall at the Royal Academy of Music, London. The ensemble also commissions, premiers and records works by leading composers and is a frequent guest at numerous music festivals, including Amelia Island, Aspen, Brevard, Highlands-Cashiers, Juneau Jazz & Classics, Kingston, Mostly Mozart, Rockport, San Miguel de Allende, and SummerFest La Jolla. At Emory, the Quartet brings performance into the classroom, collaborating with professors to create interdisciplinary events and conversations. It enriches the cultural life of the community with its Emory Youth Chamber Music Program, which provides intensive training in small ensemble playing to advanced pre-college students. The ensemble’s major Emory projects include performance of the complete cycle of Beethoven quartets, performance of pairings of Bach’s complete works for solo violin, viola and cello with the six Bartók string quartets, and development of a series of “Jazz Meets Classics” programs, bringing these two genres together. Outside Atlanta, the Quartet has held residencies in Augusta, Jacksonville and Juneau, which have combined traditional performances with educational outreach, performances in non-traditional venues, and master classes for student musicians. The members of the Quartet (violinists Elizabeth Fayette and Jessica Wu, violist Yinzi Kong, and cellist Guang Wang) collaborate with some of the world’s finest musicians, including Andres Cardenes, Eliot Fisk, Christopher O’Riley, William Preucil, Richard Stoltzman, Robert Spano, Charles Wadsworth, Peter Wiley, and the Eroica Trio. 76

ORGANIST Aesook Moon, organist, received her undergraduate degree in organ performance from the Seoul Presbyterian Seminary and a master’s degree from Hanyang University in Seoul, Korea. She earned a second master’s degree in organ performance from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. In 2006 she received the doctor of musical arts degree in organ performance from the University of North Texas. While in Texas she won first place and the best hymn playing award in the William C. Hall Organ Competition. Currently Aesook serves as associate organist-choirmaster at Trinity Episcopal Church in Columbus. She also is a collaborative pianist in Columbus State University’s Schwob School of Music, a position she has held since 2009. In this position she accompanies voice and instrumental students and the University Singers. Prior to coming to Columbus, Aesook was an adjunct organ instructor at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and served as organist for First-Centenary United Methodist Church in Chattanooga, Tennessee. More recently she has served as organist at First United Methodist Church, Dothan, Alabama, and as pianist-organist at St. Luke United Methodist Church, Columbus. During her career she has presented many solo organ recitals and accompanied several choirs. Aesook lives in Midland, Georgia with her husband and two sons.

PIANIST Janie Lee Bullock, pianist, received the BME degree from Florida State University and the MM degree in piano performance with emphasis in accompanying from the University of Southern Mississippi, where she collaborated in many vocal and instrumental chamber music programs and musical theater performances. She has done extensive choral accompanying and has been pianist/organist for several choral concert tours throughout Eastern and Western Europe with the Columbus Civic Chorale and with the Young Presbyterian Singers. She is a collaborative pianist at CSU’s Schwob School of Music, where she plays recitals, juries, competitions, master classes and auditions. In 2007 Janie Lee accompanied the national winner of the MTNA Young Artists vocal competition in Toronto, Canada, and in 2008 accompanied the national finalist at the MTNA conference in Denver, Colorado. She has served as a church musician in Methodist and Episcopal churches for more than thirty years and has been the organist at First Baptist Church of Columbus since 2003. She is also active in musical theater, having been music director and pianist for Broadway shows in Texas, Mississippi, and Georgia. Currently, she is principle pianist with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra and has been pianist for Cantus Columbus since the group’s founding. This performance is supported by a grant from the City of Columbus through the Columbus Cultural Arts Alliance and the Columbus Convention & Visitors Bureau. 77

TICKETS AT THE DOOR—Tickets to events that are not sold-out may be purchased at the box office beginning one hour before the start of the event. SEASON TICKETS—Season tickets may be purchased at the box office by telephone (706-256-3612) or with order forms in RiverCenter publications and mailings.
