Hello and welcome to the Winter - Spring season at Riverbank Arts Centre. We have gathered together the very best in music, theatre, comedy and visual arts for your enjoyment this season. The brochure is bursting with family and children events of all kinds, including family traditional and classical music, family science workshops, family theatre and family cinema. Moonfish Theatre Company - our theatre company in residence - will be making their presence felt and seen, so keep your eyes peeled and brush up on your Irish. We look forward to seeing you - from Alex, Damien, Eric, Bridget, and all the team!

2016 sees us embark on an exciting new residency with Galway based, bilingual MOONFISH THEATRE. As part of the residency two of our team are brushing up on their gaeilge through Ionad ag Foghlaim. Full details see page 6.

As part of the 1916-2016 NATIONAL CENTENARY PROGRAMME, Riverbank Arts Centre will be hosting a number of events celebrating and commemorating the Easter Rising throughout the year.

The Creative Well Open Studio takes place in the Riverbank Arts Centre every Monday. All are welcome, whether you are a complete beginner, practicing artist or somewhere in the middle. We cater for people of all abilities and mobilities. Email: thecreativewellkildare@ gmail.com

We have two dedicated gallery spaces for our visual art exhibitions. McKenna Gallery is located on the lower level, which is accessible by both stairs and lift Children’s Gallery is on the ground floor level adjacent to the café. As part of our visual arts programme we host a number of artist talks. All our visual arts events are free of charge, including the artist talks.

Moonfish Theatre Residency Theatre as you’ve never experienced it before!

We are very excited that plans are now well underway for Moonfish Theatre’s residency with us here in Riverbank Arts Centre! MOONFISH THEATRE are an ensemble company from Galway, who create work filled with imagination and energy for young people and adults, in both English and Irish. Anyone who was lucky enough to get a ticket to their sell-out bilingual production of Star of the Sea will know what a treat is in store for Kildare audiences this year! As part of their residency MOONFISH THEATRE will be exploring a new style of theatre that allows the audience to physically immerse themselves in the world of the show. No more sitting back in your seats – this will be theatre as you’ve never experienced it before! Through workshops and experimentation MOONFISH THEATRE will develop a new piece of work, specially commissioned by Riverbank Arts Centre and Kildare Library Services, to be opened in April 2016. But we don’t want to give away too much just yet! Stay tuned for more details... In the meantime, Moonfish will kick off their residency with a cutting edge Arduino workshop for anyone into the technical side of theatre, which you can find out more about on page 31. They will also be giving the staff at Riverbank a helping hand at improving our Irish through the Ionad ag Foghlaim scheme, which you can read more about below. It’s going to be a great year, so watch this space for updates on Moonfish at Riverbank! UCHRONIA ARTIST TALK WITH SINEAD MCDONALD: FRI 22ND JAN AT 7PM SEE PAGE 11

uchronia: an exhibition by sinead mcdonald thur 7th jan-thur 18th feb mckenna gallery ‘Uchronia refers’ to a hypothetical or fictional time-period of our world, in contrast to altogether fictional lands or worlds. A concept similar to alternate history but different in the manner that uchronic times are not easily defined’ – Wikipedia. These images form a series of real and alternate self-portraits, investigating how decisions, accidents, and circumstances can change us utterly. How do the things we do send us on different trajectories in life. How can something as trivial as a poster viewed on a new route home from work one day, or as momentous as the death of a loved one, alter who we fundamentally become. And what if we could warn ourselves? The Tachyonic Antitelephone is a theoretical device from physics’ history, a thought experiment realised. What if our future self could send back messages in time, telling us what our life could be, warning us of impending danger, or simply steering us away from mistakes and regrets. The machine opens up questions of free will, choice, fate and pre-destination. Can we change who we were, or who we may become? Do we really have the power to shift our own narratives? Sinead McDonald is a Dublin based visual artist. A graduate of the Art in the Digital World Fine Art Masters at N.C.A.D., her research and practice focuses on issues of authorship and narrative in portraits and images of people, and the creation of identity in online and offline spaces. Her work incorporates new technologies; digital production, web based art and physical computing, alongside photography, video, and historical lens-based processes. Recent trajectories explore the sciences and collaborative practice, and how using different disciplines can help navigate and illuminate difficult and taboo subjects. She is most interested in how technologies and sciences old and new affect and challenge our perceptions, allow us to tell stories, and, ultimately, explore the most human of desires and yearnings. * Make a Clock Workshop with Sinead McDonald on Wed 17th Feb, see page 20

an exhibition by Shona Shirley Macdonald sat 9th jan-tue 16th feb children’s gallery This fantastical exhibition by artist Shona Shirley Macdonald combines two atmospheric and richly detailed visual stories. The first is ‘Juniper’, which is a series of illustrations, depicting the protagonist Juniper and her companions searching through peculiar and threatening landscapes, trying to make sense of their world. First exhibited in Limavady, Northern Ireland in the Roe Valley Arts and Cultural Centre, this is Shona’s first solo show. The second story is stop-motion animation ‘The Forest of Cake’, following the curious Grub on his fateful journey out into the bizarre and mysterious forest. ‘The Forest of Cake’ is her graduate film and has been screened in animation festivals in the Uk, Ireland and Bosnia & Herzegovina. Shona Shirley Macdonald is a Scottish artist based in Co. Waterford. She is a graduate of Edinburgh College of Art, having specialised in stop-motion animation. She now primarily works as an illustrator and is a member of the Illustrators Guild of Ireland. Her illustration projects range from book illustration to concept artwork for theatre and computer games, and she exhibits her artwork nationally and internationally.

dog! perform live on stage, right before their eyes in this exciting and fun filled musical production. The popular tale takes a few twists and turns along the way with other new puppet characters and hopefully a happy ever after. Kids will learn that music can be found everywhere as they sing and dance to all their favourite songs. Watch your kids take part in action songs like the “Heads shoulders knees and toes” “If you’re happy and you know it” and “Twinkle twinkle little star“ as well as many other all-time children’s favourites. It will be an experience for all the family to remember and cherish.

Director Sarah Gavron’s intense drama traces the story of the foot soldiers of the early feminist movement as they fought for the right to vote. Maud has worked hard and exploitative hours in the same factory job since she was a girl; her only respite is the affection of her husband and their sweet young son. When her deepening friendships with fellow worker Violet and activist Edith Ellyn fuel her sense of injustice, she commits to the suffrage cause. Maud joins at the same time that the movement becomes more radical and violent, spurred on by the rousing leadership of Emmeline Pankhurst and in reaction to the increasingly hostile interventions of the state. In joining the fight for equality, she unites with women who risk their jobs, their homes, their children and their lives.

Short documentary (25 mins.) covering the life of the Kildare born Irish Fenian John Devoy. One of the leaders of the I.R.B. and Clan na Gael, he played an important role in the 1916 Rising, working closely with Roger Casement to source German arms for the rebels. It focuses on Devoy’s relationship with the 1916 rebels, explores his advanced knowledge of the Rising and his attempts to travel to Ireland to participate in it.

Uchronia and the Tachyonic Antitelephone both draw from Sinead’s experience of grief and shame following the death of her son in 2000. She often uses her practice to explore this and other difficult and personal events, and has contributed to the First Fortnight mental health arts festival in the past, making two large scale pieces exploring public perceptions of mental health. Sinead will be joined by Eithne McAdam, visual arts curator with First Fortnight, for an informal discussion on these themes in her own work and the broader art world, and how the arts can facilitate a more open discourse.

LOVE & MERCY presents an unconventional portrait of Brian Wilson, the mercurial singer, songwriter and leader of The Beach Boys. Set against the era-defining catalogue of Wilson’s music, the film intimately examines the personal voyage and ultimate salvation of the icon whose success came at an extraordinary personal cost. Starring Paul Dano, John Cusack, Paul Giamatti and Elizabeth Banks, Love & Mercy examines two key periods in Wilson’s life. In the 1960s, as the Beach Boys’ leader, Wilson struggles with emerging psychosis as he attempts to craft his avant-garde pop masterpiece, Pet Sounds. In the 1980s, he is a broken, confused man under the 24-hour watch of shady therapist Dr. Eugene Landy. Not to be missed.

Illustrator Sarah Whelan will give the participants an introduction on creating their very own picture book, where they will be both writing their own story and illustrating it. The workshop will start with an introduction to character development and story writing. Participants will be encouraged to use the surrounding exhibition of illustrations as inspiration for their character and then will develop their story based on this character. There will be a particular focus on achieving the balance between the words and pictures when working on the illustrations for the picture book . Once the workshop is complete the final books will be displayed during the exhibition launch before the participants get to take it home to read it to their friends and family time and time again. This is the perfect workshop for every picture book maker in the making!

Described as one of Ireland’s best sean nós singers, Liam Ó Maonlaí has always remained faithful to his traditional roots despite global success with rock band Hothouse Flowers, while Kevin Burke’s fiddle playing has been at the forefront of traditional music for over 30 years. Jailed, Aladdin becomes embroiled in a nefarious plot to recover a mysterious old lamp. Can Aladdin recover the lamp? Will the anarchic genie (voiced by Robin Williams) grant his wish and make him a prince so he can marry the princess?

The new film from Oliver Hirschbiegel (Downfall, Five Minutes of Heaven) tells a tense and largely unknown story based on true events. In 1939 carpenter Georg Elser - impressively played here by The White Ribbon’s Christian Friedel - planted a homemade bomb behind Hitler’s lectern at a Nazi Party meeting. But the Führer left the meeting earlier than planned, with the explosion detonating 13 minutes later. With the blast occurring at the beginning of the film, Hirschbiegel cleverly uses the Nazi’s subsequent interrogation of Elser to reveal in flashback as to why and when this ordinary but strong-willed man concocted his plan.

Deidre Kelleghan is an Astronomer, Artist and Educator. She invents and enacts creative workshops to help children understand our solar system and space exploration. Over the course of two of these workshops at Riverbank Arts Centre, Deirdre and the participating children will create a series of artworks inspired by their explorations of moons, Mars and more. These artworks will then make up the content of the exhibition along with screenings of various space missions. Road to Rebellion - eamonn O’Modhrain, Kildare and the 1916 Rising The O’Modhráin Private Collection Revealed mon 29th feb-fri 18th mar mckenna gallery Discovered by chance by family member Robert Doyle, Athgarvan in 2010 while clearing out an attic, the O’Modhráin family’s documents and personal effects are a collection of historical items which give a unique insight into Irish nationalism at a local level. The majority of the documents which are on display for the first time, relate to Éamonn O’Modhráin, a prominent nationalist and republican in Co. Kildare. Stored inside a large metal container were letters and postcards written by Éamonn O’Modhráin from Wakefield jail and Frongoch prison camp (1916), Mountjoy Jail during the War of Independence and Civil War years, and autograph books containing the names of many of his fellow prisoners. There are also letters from his two sisters, Una and Treasa Ní Modhráin, who lived in Dublin during that time and were members of Cumman na mBan. § Items on display will include a damaged fob watch, a small handmade Celtic brooch engraved with “Mountjoy Jail EOM”, a slightly moth-eaten cloth badge with the prisoner inscription A356 stamped on it, and a knife, fork and spoon wrapped in paper stating: “Used by E. O’Modhráin in Wakefield Prison, 1916.”

The Lambert Puppet Theatre is widely recognised as the premier Touring Puppet Theatre Company in Ireland and also internationally renowned for its many fine productions in Theatres throughout Ireland, The UK and Europe.. From its earliest beginning the Lambert family has been involved with RTE TV, working the hugely popular series Wanderly Wagon featuring the Late Eugene Lambert and Judge. Paula Lambert was the ‘Bosco’ voice on TV for seventeen years and indeed BOSCO is still a firm favourite with the younger children and will make a nostalgic appearance in the opening part of the Show. This is a beautifully produced show with large puppets, colourful sets and exquisite lighting.

Madame de Markievicz on Trial comes to Riverbank Arts Centre following a sell-out run in Dublin. The play, centred on Constance Markievicz, depicts an event in Dublin at Easter in 1916 when a policeman was fatally shot, and the subsequent murder case and imprisoning during the autumn of 1917. Much of the dialogue is largely based on the extensive speeches made by Markievicz during this period. The testimonies of the witnesses are interwoven to show that Madame was a normal, multi-dimensional woman, in contrast to the usual one-dimensional icon frequently depicted. The audience will be the ultimate judge, as they leave the theatre, to decide to issue an innocent or guilty verdict.

Part of our UP programme, SNOOZLE & THE LULLABUGS brings together our PMLD and early years work for the first time. Snoozle wants to stay up and rock, but his band, The Lullabugs, just want to go to sleep. Using everything at their disposal, including chilled-out doo-wop harmonies and calming sensory activities, The Lullabugs try every trick in the book… but Snoozle will not be easily swayed. The audience decide for themselves and vote with their eyelids who wins this battle of the band.

Jack will be giving a potted history of his stunning career to date and will be performing many songs from the new album.
