Meeting the faces behind the hands that hang up the milk cups, and those that formed the Agricultural Phenomenon, known as Kaipaki Dairies!
Q&A Where did the idea from Kaipaki Dairies originate from? We were sick of seeing plastic in cafes and supermarkets and wanted to do something about it! Now, we have 35 cafes and 20 staff room businesses which use our services. We are also in New World franchises across and around Hamilton, Matamata and Morrinsville. We also wanted to go down the path of selling delicious milk in glass bottles and having it on-tap, a system which saves a lot of plastic from being produced, which is a key objective of our business.
Tell us about the process, once the milk is picked up from the Dairy Farm? Once picked up from the farm, the milk is taken 2 minutes up the road to our factory where pasteurisation begins, which is when the milk is partially sterilised to make is safe for human consumption. Our milk is heated to 70 degrees to kill any bacteria and then cooled for bottling, and that’s all, there really is “nothing added and nothing taken away”.
We’ve seen your ‘Milk Tap’ system, what exactly is it and how does it work? Firstly, gone are the days of plastic milk bottles! Designed to sit right next to your coffee machine, delivered in 18 litre reusable kegs that sit in your fridge, which are picked up and refilled each time that our team deliver a fresh keg to your cafe / coffee shop!

Sustainability. How is your business sustainable? Did you know that 100 million plastic bottles go straight into landfill, which then takes 400 million years to decompose. With this in-mind, our answer is: • Re-usable Milk Bottles: Choosing milk in glass bottles is sustainable & also helps to add flavour to our premium milk. For glass to be the environmental player, it needs to be re-used as many times as possible, which is why we invested significant capital into our factory to ensure that thousands of glass bottles can be washed & re-used. • Re-usable Milk Kegs: Invented in Tasmania by Ed Crick, used for our milk tap system that is rolling out through the Waikato, Bay of Plenty & Auckland Regions. Over a lifetime, one keg will save 7,000 milk bottles from coming into production. For some reason, up until now all of this information isn’t exactly ‘common knowledge’ to everyone, which is why we’ve taken it upon ourselves to bring it to the forefront.

Another Heroes Story Meet Sophie & Oscar, two heroes that will forever be connected, for more reasons than one.

Together, my daughter Sophie and my grandson Oscar share an individual journey with, Kidney Kids, New Zealand.
Eventually, genetic testing was done, and the doctors came to a diagnosis of a rare condition that Sophie has.
We first met Kidney Kids when Sophie was just three years old, in Starship Hospital. Just days into this world, we noticed that something wasn’t quite right with Sophie, she wasn’t developing as her siblings did when they were the same age, and she developed her first urinary tract infection at just 3 weeks old.
‘Kidney Kids’ was a vital life line for us as a family as we went through this journey together, with Sophie. The support they provide is so crucial for families trying to navigate life with a child with kidney needs. Hospital visits from Kidney Kid staff, camps, Christmas parties, and meeting other Kidney Kids and their families, helped Sophie to come to terms with life as a ‘Kidney Kid’.
“This was the beginning of a journey that, at times, felt like we were swimming against a current, barely keeping our head above water”. At the time, we lived in the Far North, a place with limited paediatric care, so when Sophie got sick, our only option was to travel all the way to Whangarei Hospital, and then further down to Starship Children’s Hospital in Auckland. Eventually, we had to fly with Sophie directly to Auckland each time she got sick, as her condition became worse. After several surgeries in an attempt to correct her kidney reflux, the surgeons decided to perform a re-implantation of her ureters. At the age of only 6, her hospital visits became less frequent, and we then moved to the Waikato two years later.
Last year, our first grandson was born. At the 20-week scan, a problem with his kidneys were detected and Oscar became a ‘Kidney Kid’ before he was even born. Connecting our daughter, Sarah, early with Kidney Kids was important to support her on the journey with baby Oscar. He has poly cystic kidneys, a different condition from what his Aunty Sophie has, and genetic testing is being done to see why. “We don’t know what the future holds for Oscar, but this family has walked this walk before and we couldn’t have done it without Kidney Kids by our side”.

The PDC’s World Series of Darts is to return to Hamilton following the huge success of the NZ Darts Masters in 2019. 2019 World Matchplay champion Rob Cross, former World Champion Gary Anderson and colourful Peter Wright also competed in Hamilton in 2019 and would be in line to return in 2022. The eight PDC stars travelling to New Zealand may also include Gerwyn Price, who recently won his second successive Grand Slam of Darts title in the UK and has moved up to third on the PDC Order of Merit. Eight Oceanic representatives will also compete as the top talents from New Zealand and Australia take on the sport’s biggest names in the two-day World Series event.
Each year the National Contemporary Art Award brings the est in Aotearoa contemporary art to the Waikato. Entries come from across the country as well as from New Zealand artists living overseas, with the finalists’ works exhibited at Waikato Museum from 6 August until 13 November. The National Contemporary Art Award was launched in 2000 by the Waikato Society of Arts and has been managed by Waikato Museum since 2006.

Kate is a Tauranga based artist who has been honing her skills in oil painting for the past 20 years! From a young age, she has loved to create and experiment with different mediums. A fascination with the human face started in early adolescence and has been a wonder she attempts to master ever since. Mostly she is discovering how the intricacies of symmetry, form and light play a critical role in how we process an image. She has completed several personal portraits for clients and enjoys the challenge that comes from capturing not only a believable likeness but portraying a familiar personality. Have you always wanted to be an Artist, what inspired you? Yes! I’ve always loved painting since I was young. My Grandfather was an artist and I always loved that it was something that we had together as he wasn’t much of a talker. What is your favourite things to illustrate / paint?

Human faces. I find it fascinating that our brains use a complex and unique way of processing faces as compared to objects. This creates the added challenge of painting portraits and trying to illustrate what makes a subject uniquely ‘them’ especially to friends and family.
How would you describe your style, and has it always been the same? This is a hard one. I would say that my style is mostly contemporary realism. Who influences you and your work? Early on, I studied Andy Warhol and Tamara De Lempicka. Both artists illustrate human faces in a unique way and they taught me how you can break any face down into shapes and shades. I am influenced by people I see on the street, I am quite a romantic and a feminist and I think these come out to some degree in my art. What is your career highlight so far? Every time I sell a painting is a huge highlight for me and I have sold a few this year. Creating art and displaying that to the public can make you feel very vulnerable so it’s reassuring when I meet a happy buyer that appreciates a piece that I have poured my heart into. Where are your art pieces best suited? Shared spaces around a home or work place. Some pieces are quite large so would be best in an entrance or foyer with plenty of space.
