The Last Animal in the World

About the Tardigrade, Hope, and the Power of Small Things

(Maailman viimeinen eläin)

First published in Finnish by Gummerus / 2026 / 350 pp.

An epic journey in search of a microscopic animal and answers to big questions about the future of our world.

“An entertaining work of non-fiction.”

SUOMEN KUVALEHTI

“A book that needed to be written. [...] A unique pleasure to read.”

HELMI KEKKONEN, AUTHOR

“I’ve searched for narratives that bring understanding to our disappearing world. I found it in the shape of the tardigrade.”

TUULA RÖNKÄ, UNIVERSITY OF HELSINKI LIBRARIAN

Despite being microscopic, the tardigrade is arguably the world’s most resilient animal. This eight-legged, slow-moving creature thrives in the Earth’s most extreme environments — from deep-sea trenches and volcanic hot springs to the vacuum of Space. Familiar to many as the cuddly bear-like creature of internet memes, the tardigrade possesses near-indestructible survival capabilities that mirror, in fascinating ways, the resilience of humans themselves.

As the world went into lockdown, Suvi Auvinen became fascinated by the story of a lunar lander that had crashed into the Moon’s Sea of Serenity — carrying an illicit cargo of tardigrades on board. What was the fate of the tardigradesdid they survive the impact? How could something so small be so indestructible? And could it hold the key to humanity’s survival in the face of climate collapse with its unique capability to cryobiosis?

In search of answers, Auvinen embarks on a global journey — from Finland to Israel, the Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Sweden, and Japan — tracing the life and habitats of tardigrades while a rich narrative around this extraordinary animal begins to take shape.

The result is a compelling work that stretches far beyond natural science, exploring the fraught relationship between humans and the natural world, the cost of our thirst for knowledge and power, and what it means to survive in times of crisis. Weaving together science, climate, and personal memoir, Auvinen reaches through the darkness toward hope — looking the end of the world squarely in the eye.

For readers of Elizabeth Kolbert, Patrik Svensson, and Lea Korsgaard.

She has written and illustrated two children’s picture books, and her debut graphic novel for adults, Boobology, was published in 2025, earning it nominations for the Finlandia Prize for Comics and for the ‘Most Beautiful Books’ 2026 Award in Finland. Meretoja’s visual storytelling is boldly colourful and playful, with a distinct sense of humour and her work is driven by a passion for equality and human rights.

Boobology

The meanings, Burden, and Liberation of Breasts (Tissilogia)

First published in Finnish by Tammi Publishers / 2025 / 184 pp.

An enlightening yet accessible non-fiction graphic novel about those soft mounds on the female body, often called symbols of womanhood itself.

Few body parts are as heavily sexualized as women’s breasts. Boobs aren’t just another body part—they literally define our taxonomic class: we are mammals. This work examines the place of women and breasts in society: Why are breasts so sexualized? Why do they arrive earlier than ever in puberty? How did doctors spend centuries getting them spectacularly wrong? And why does a body part designed to feed infants spark such intense cultural battles? Boobology is an eye-opening journey through prehistory to Instagram, from evolutionary biology to the ‘Free the Nipple’ movement.

Blending accessible science, cultural criticism, and art history with insightful illustrations, Boobology challenges tired assumptions and opens fresh conversations. For anyone who has breasts, wants them, fears them, loves them, or simply wonders why they matter so much—this graphic novel is essential reading.

SOPHIA JANSSON (b. 1961) is the chairman of the board of Moomin Characters and, together with other heirs, is responsible for Tove Jansson’s estate. She is the daughter of Tove Jansson’s brother Lars. Her memoir, Three Islands, is her literary debut.

Three Islands: Father, Mother and Me

(Tre Öar)

First published in Swedish by Förlaget M / 2025 / 350 pp.

Three Islands: Father, Mother and Me is a gripping story of family, the price of silence and the liberating power of storytelling.

Sophia’s father, Lars and mother Nita’s relationship was not built on passionate love, but they shared the most important thing in life: a child. Sophia Jansson’s autobiography features three islands: Tonga, where the Jansson siblings wanted to move to in the 1940s, Ibiza, where Sophia lived in her early childhood, and the island in Pellinge, where the Janssons have spent time over generations.

Nita passed away early. Father and daughter had to cope without her. Lars stood for security and care, but also for an unwavering silence. What happened to Mum? And was her father, Lars, the saint Sophia always thought he was? She searches for the truth with the help of previously unknown letters. The Jansson family comes close to us: the grandfather suffers from depression and Germanism, his wife, Ham sketches and stands out, Tove and her brother Lasse move to become independent.

Dear Tove – Letters From Children Around the World

(Tove ja maailman lapset)

First published in Finnish by WSOY / 2025 / 192 pp.

The book offers a new perspective on the beloved author, sharing the stories behind the letters Tove Jansson received from readers and revealing the depth of Tove’s responses to their concerns.

According to Tove Jansson (1914-2001), she received up to 1,500-2,000 letters a year from her young readers from all corners of the world. ‘I have received a lot of love,’ she said towards the end of her life, patting the stack of letters she received in reply. The letters from children and young people were full of admiration and love for Tove, but also contained touching questions about life, including loneliness, sadness, and all the problems, big and small. In their own way, the letters were admiration letters, but even more so, they are open and honest letters to a wise adult with the ability to understand, comfort and advise. In her replies, Tove wrote openly about her own childhood and her work as a writer, and also told the disappointed why the Moomin books were no longer being written.

Zen and the Moomins

(Zen ja muumit)

First published in Finnish by Atena / 2026 / 220 pp.

An enchanting look at Tove Jansson’s beloved Moomin stories through the eyes of Zen Buddhism.

Moominmamma embodies perfect nonattachment, releasing expectations with the grace of a seasoned master. Snufkin wanders freely, living in the eternal now, unburdened by possessions like an ancient sage. Even Moominpappa’s restless need to write, explain, and control reflects our own struggle with the ego— could he learn to simply be?

Through the gentle inhabitants of Moominvalley, Ijäs illuminates Zen’s most elusive concepts: mindfulness, impermanence, compassion, and the art of letting go. In these cherished characters, we see our own longing, attachment, fear, dissatisfaction—and the possibility of awakening.

Zen and the Moomins is a warm, accessible introduction to Zen philosophy that never simplifies or condescends. By pairing ancient Eastern wisdom with Jansson’s timeless characters, Ijäs builds a bridge between two profound traditions of understanding what it means to be human. A captivating and wise book for Moomin lovers, seekers of spiritual wisdom, and anyone approaching life’s big questions with openness and wonder.

Tove and Her Music

(Detta är min målarsång: Tove Jansson och musiken) First published in Swedish by Förlaget M / 2025 / 197 pp.

A new, intimate glimpse into the life of Tove Jansson, uncovering the songs and music that inspired the artist and those which she composed herself, from Moomin melodies to hidden love song lyrics.

Music played a significant role in Tove Jansson’s life. A multi-talented artist rebel with many strings to her bow, she lived according to her own words: “paint paint paint lill girl, remember that nothing stands still, always you shall wander.” Singer and actor Emma Klingenberg, who has toured with the concert Tove Jansson - The Songwriter and researched the musical themes in Tove’s work, has now compiled her golden finds.

Klingenberg writes engagingly about the music Tove danced to in her studio and on her island of Klovharu, and delving deep into Tove’s and her partner Tuulikki Pietilä’s extensive cassette collection. Tove’s own lyrics are also collected here. Many relationships in Tove’s life influenced her songwriting, not least her stormy love affair with theatre director Vivica Bandler, which resulted in the secret collection Songs for My Woman and the bold The Big Mymble Song.

Tove and Her Music is a collection of over sixty original song lyrics and includes everything from Moomin songs to the beloved ‘Autumn Song’, illustrated throughout with unique material in the form of diary sketches, photographs and handwritten documents.

SVERIGES RADIO

Malin Kivelä wants to get closer to nature. She is approaching fifty, her children have all grown up, and she, who would never have a pet, has given up and got a cat. Above all, she thinks about how we should live to make the only earth we have feel better.

Alone in the countryside by nightlight, armed with popcorn, Malin ploughs through literature about the wild men Pentti Linkola and the Unabomber, and of course reads the founding father Thoreau. She finds the Polish biologist Simona Kossak, who lived among the animals in Europe’s last great primaeval forest, and finally the controversial Californian ecophilosopher Donna Haraway.

But nature is not only romantic wilderness and endangered species, it is also destructive havoc in the body. The anxiety of responding to illness drives Malin towards the sea and surfing; it teaches her to surrender to the forces of nature and to see the beauty in what is bigger than herself.

Kivelä received a Society of Swedish Literature in Finland Award in 2026 for the work.

NARRATIVE NON-FICTION, ENVIRONMENT & NATURE / JENNI

JENNI RÄINÄ (b. 1980) is a Finnish writer and columnist who has been awarded the Finlandia Prize for Non-Fiction as part of a working group on the book The Forest After Us (Metsä meidän jälkeemme, 2019) and the Bothnia Prize for the book On the Edge (Reunalla, 2017), which tells the story of remote villages, together with photographer Vesa Ranta. Shifting Waters was nominated for both the Finlandia Prize for Non-Fiction and Bothnia Prize in 2025. In her previous work, Kulkijat (2021), Räinä travels through northern landscapes and tells stories of women in the wilderness.

Räinä is known as a clear-thinking advocate for nature and a powerful and sensual portrayer of the natural world. Her second novel, Persecution (Vaino), was published in autumn 2025 to critical acclaim.

Shifting Waters: A Journey Through an Altered Landscape of Water and Time

(Veden ajat: Matka läpi muuttuneen maiseman)

First published in Finnish by Like / 2025 / 219 pp.

An affecting work about an ecosystem silently disappearing in front of our own eyes.

“This fascinating work provides information about an element that concerns us all, but in addition to concern, it also inspires hope that we can better understand the environment of which we are all a part.”

BOTNIA PRIZE JURY

Several years ago writer Jenni Räinä came to the realisation that natural streams had all but disappeared from both near her home and more widely around the country. After her father’s death, she set out on an expedition along the altered waterways. She traveled from springs to streams, from streams along rivers, and down rivers to the seashore - contemplating the loss of these waterways as she processed her own, personal loss. What she witnessed was a drastic change which had taken place within a single generation.

Blending memoir with astute journalism, in this work of creative non-fiction, reminiscent of Robert Macfarlane’s Is a River Alive? Jenni Räinä takes readers vividly depicting the disappearing ways of life and their uniqueness in her distinctive and beautiful prose.

Shifting Waters was nominated for the Bothnia- and Finlandia Non-Fiction prizes in 2025.

Cloudberry Confessional:

Essays on Life, Land and Legends

(Hillasuolla kaikki on toisin)

First published in Finnish by Into Kustannus / 2023 / 270 pp.

Structured like a conversation with a good friend, this collection of essays transports the reader into nature, where, treacherous and sinking, the mire becomes a paradise and a home as the cloudberry becomes a muse for its pickers.

Foraging berries is a quintessentially Nordic pastime and the berry pickers gold, the mire-loving cloudberry, rubus chamaemorus, thrives on the northernmost pine mires of the Nordic countries. It is there, where writers and friends Niina Kivilä and Kati Saonegin head to in an old Saab every summer to hunt their mutual golden berry muse, equipped with rubber boots, buckets, and a dogged forager’s determination.

Like a conversation between friends, whose friendship is cemented on the boggy tussocks of the cloudberry mire amidst clouds of mosquitoes, the mire opens up as a space, a sanctuary to tackle weighty subjects such as mental health, death, and childlessness, while the friends obsessively hunt the tenacious cloudberry.

“Picking cloudberries is the best thing a person can do. A mutual love of cloudberries and mires saw two friends write a book together in which the mire is a life - in all its joys and sorrows - unto its own.”

A lyrical, intertextual manifesto for safeguarding our relationship to nature and the inherent value of its seemingly most inhospitable parts, Kivilä and Saonegin approach the history and ecology of the pine mires via their mutual foraging passion as well the creation myths of the Kalevala, intertextual references, and ecology. Ultimately showing us that the cloudberry plant is wiser than man, Cloudberry Confessional strikes the perfect balance between intimate yet objective, concise yet poetic, immersing readers in the Nordic relationship to nature with the life-affirming power of nature in Long Litt Woon’s The Way Through the Woods, and the essayistic style of Nina Mingya Powles’ Small Bodies of Water.

A riveting journey through nature’s pharmacy—where the line between cure and poison is measured in milligrams.

What if the same molecule that could save your life could also end it? The Atlas of Poisons and Potions reveals the dark beauty of nature’s most powerful compounds, exploring humanity’s centuries-long dance with the plants and animals that heal us, intoxicate us, and sometimes kill us.

From the quinine that conquered malaria to the morphine that revolutionized pain relief, from the curare used by indigenous hunters that became a surgical miracle to the viper venom transformed into blood pressure medication—this beautifully illustrated compendium tells the stories of 45 remarkable natural compounds that have shaped human history.

Richly illustrated and accessibly written, The Atlas of Poisons and Potions is not a health guide but an absorbing look at the intersection of nature, chemistry, medicine, and history —revealing how humans across continents discovered, refined, and sometimes weaponized nature’s most potent chemical arsenal.

According to her, the Matti comics were born by accident, when she drew some sketches for her foreign friends to explain ‘Finnishness’. 100,000+ COPIES SOLD IN FINLAND

Meet Matti, a stereotypical Finn who appreciates peace, quiet and personal space. Among the things that make Matti anxious are receiving compliments, sitting next to a stranger on a bus, and replying to small talk with lengthy descriptions of his day. Matti tries his best to give space, be polite and not bother with unnecessary chit chat.

Finnish Nightmares have been bestsellers worldwide from Finland to Japan and from the USA to China. Matti figured in The New York Times and in The Guardian, and he even inspired a new term for social awkwardness in Mandarin: jingfen, or ”spiritually Finnish”.

Atena / 2019 / 100 pp.

In Matti in the Wallet, Matti clings to the Finnish language and tells how our beloved Northern people communicate.

Finnish Nightmares - A Different Kind of Social Guide to Finland

Atena / 2016 / 100 pp.

Finnish Nightmares is a book about what it is like to be a Finn in social occasions.

For a foreigner the book opens implied codes that can be difficult to understand but are shared with all Finns.

Pocket Matti - “Taskumatti” and Other New Adventures in Finnish Language Nightmares

Atena / 2022 / 96 pp.

Now you have to be as precise as a carrot! In this book, Matti bends from iron wire what the most beloved Finnish idioms mean. Literally.

Finnish Nightmares 2 - An Even More Different Kind of Social Guide to Finland

Atena / 2017 / 96 pp.

Matti does things the way a regular Finn would do: in silence and trying his best not to stand out or bother anyone.

Finnish Nightmares 2 takes Matti abroad, where he encounters even more uncomfortable social situations.

They are also a wonderful alternative to the popular Icelandic sweaters.
