Tove Jansson

Work and Love

Finnish-Swedish writer and artist Tove Jansson (1914 - 2001) achieved worldwide fame as the creator of the Moomins, written and illustrated between 1945 and 1970. The books about the brave, adventurous, yet family focused and home-loving Moomins have been translated into more than 55 languages and are still in print all over the world today. The Moomins were only a part of Jansson’s prodigious output. Already admired in Nordic art circles as a painter, cartoonist and illustrator, she would go on to write a series of classic novels and short stories. She remains Scandinavia’s best loved author. Tove Jansson’s work reflected the tenets of her life: her love of family, of nature, and her insistence on freedom to pursue her art. “Work and love” was the motto she chose for herself and her approach to both was joyful and uncompromising.

Comet in Moominland

This year marks the 80th anniversary of Comet in Moominland, Tove Jansson’s second Moomin story. The eventful adventure centres on a mysterious comet that threatens the very existence of Moominvalley, the home of the Moomins, and the journey of discovery by Moomin and his friend Sniff across the Lonely Mountains. The story also introduces many much-loved Moomin characters.

The central theme for 2026 is courage, as in the novel Comet in Moominland. The story conveys the importance of courage, solidarity, friendship and inclusiveness.

In Moominvalley, there are no superheroes. Tove Jansson’s Moomin stories show us that we don’t need to face challenges alone, and in dark times, we should instead work together to bring out the best in ourselves, despite our differences.

We’re braver together.

The model of the Moominhouse, which is two metres high and forms the basis of the book, was created by Tove Jansson’s partner Tuulikki Pietilä, Pentti Eistola, and Tove Jansson. The original model is in the Moomin Museum in Tampere for everyone to see.

Tove and Lars Jansson

The Moomin comics were originally created by Tove Jansson and her brother Lars Jansson for the Evening News in London, at the time the world’s biggest newspaper. The comic was commissioned in the 1950s and the creative siblings produced the daily adventures for over 20 years. By the end of its run in 1975, Moomin comics were syndicated to 120 newspapers in over 40 countries, reaching more than 20 million readers daily.

Illustrations by Tove Jansson

During her career, Tove Jansson was commissioned to illustrate translated English classics. The results were unique and beautiful. Tove was first asked to illustrate the Swedish edition of Lewis Carroll’s The Hunting of the Snark in 1959. The beautiful Swedish edition of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, with Tove’s illustrations, was first published in 1966.

The Hunting of the Snark

by Lewis Carroll, illustrations by Tove Jansson

This nonsense poem (first published in 1876) tells the story of how the Bellman and his eccentric crew, who include a butcher, a baker, a beaver and a tailor, set off in quest of that most mysterious and elusive of creatures, the Snark.

In Tove Jansson, Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (first published in 1865) finds an illustrator worthy of its enchantment and surreal beauty. This elegant edition of the timeless classic is illustrated in a dreamy, delicate, and playful style that perfectly captures the surreal and mystical edge of Lewis Carrol’s masterpiece.

’Snuggle up close, and shut your eyes tight, And sleep without dreaming the whole of the night.

The comet is gone, and your mother is near To keep you from harm till the morning

Tove Jansson’s evocative song Black Night, originally from Moominland Midwinter (Trollvinter) is reproduced here in a rhythmic storybook for the youngest of the family. Illustrator Mia Nilsson has interpreted the song in beautiful graphic images, with inspiration from the picture book The Book about Moomin, Mymble and Little My (Hur gick det sen?).

’Here come the dumb, The lonely and the rum, The wild and the quiet. Thud goes the drum.

Crackle goes the bonfire

Glowing in the white snow, Swish go the tails, Swinging through the light snow.

Thud goes the drumming

In the black, black night.’

Zen and the Moomins

(Zen ja muumit)

Atena / April 2026 / 220 pp.

An enchanting look at Tove Jansson’s beloved Moomin stories through the eyes of Zen Buddhism.

Moominmamma embodies perfect non-attachment, releasing expectations with the grace of a seasoned master. Snufkin wanders freely, living in the eternal now, unburdened by possessions like an ancient sage. Even Moominpappa’s restless need to write, explain, and control reflects our own struggle with the ego— could he learn to simply be?

Through the gentle inhabitants of Moominvalley, Ijäs illuminates Zen’s most elusive concepts: mindfulness, impermanence, compassion, and the art of letting go. In these cherished characters, we see our own longing, attachment, fear, dissatisfaction—and the possibility of awakening.

Zen and the Moomins is a warm, accessible introduction to Zen philosophy that never simplifies or condescends. By pairing ancient Eastern wisdom with Jansson’s timeless characters, Ijäs builds a bridge between two profound traditions of understanding what it means to be human. A captivating and wise book for Moomin lovers, seekers of spiritual wisdom, and anyone approaching life’s big questions with openness and wonder.

Dear Tove – Letters From Children Around the World

(Tove ja maailman lapset)

First published in Finnish by WSOY / 2025 / 192 pp.

Tove and Her Music

According to Tove Jansson (1914-2001), she received up to 1,500-2,000 letters a year from her young readers from all corners of the world. ‘I have received a lot of love,’ she said towards the end of her life, patting the stack of letters she received. The letters from children and young people were full of admiration and love for Tove, but also contained touching questions about life, including loneliness, sadness, and all kinds of problems, big and small. In their own way, the letters were admiration letters, but even more so, they are open and honest letters to a wise adult with the ability to understand, comfort and advise. In her replies, Tove wrote openly about her own childhood and her work as a writer, and also told the disappointed why the Moomin books were no longer being written.

Tuula Karjalainen, the author of Tove Jansson’s biography, has selected the most interesting letters from readers and the author’s replies, shedding light on the background to the correspondence and revealing insights into Tove’s own life. The reading experience is complemented by stunning four-colour illustrations.

The book offers a new perspective on the beloved author, sharing the stories behind the letters Tove Jansson received from readers and revealing the depth of Tove’s responses to their concerns.

(Detta är min målarsång: Tove Jansson och musiken)

First published in Swedish by Förlaget M / 2025 / 197 pp.

A new, intimate glimpse into the life of Tove Jansson, uncovering the songs and music that inspired the artist and those which she composed herself, from Moomin melodies to hidden love song lyrics.

Music played a significant role in Tove Jansson’s life. A multi-talented artist rebel with many strings to her bow, she lived according to her own words: “paint paint paint lill girl, remember that nothing stands still, always you shall wander.” Singer and actor Emma Klingenberg, who has toured with the concert Tove Jansson - The Songwriter and researched the musical themes in Tove’s work, has now compiled her golden finds.

Klingenberg writes engagingly about the music Tove danced to in her studio and on her island of Klovharun, and delving deep into Tove’s and her partner Tuulikki Pietilä’s extensive cassette collection. Tove’s own lyrics are also collected here. Many relationships in Tove’s life influenced her songwriting, not least her stormy love affair with theatre director Vivica Bandler, which resulted in the secret collection Songs for My Woman and the bold The Big Mymble Song.

Tove and Her Music is a collection of over sixty original song lyrics and includes everything from Moomin songs to the beloved ‘Autumn Song’, illustrated throughout with unique material in the form of diary sketches, photographs and handwritten documents.
