TOVE JANSSON (1914-2001) is a Finnish-Swedish writer and artist, who achieved worldwide fame as the creator of the Moomins, written and illustrated between 1945 and 1980. The books about the brave, adventurous, yet family-focused and home-loving Moomins have been translated into more than 50 languages and are still in print all over the world today. The Moomins were only a part of Jansson’s prodigious output. Already admired in Nordic art circles as a painter, cartoonist and illustrator, she would go on to write a series of classic novels and short stories. She remains Scandinavia’s best-loved author.

Comet in Moominland

(Kometjakten / Kometen kommer) 1946, 1968 / 172 pp.

The central theme for 2026 is courage, as in the novel Comet in Moominland. The story conveys the importance of courage, solidarity, friendship and inclusiveness.

This year marks the 80th anniversary of Comet in Moominland, Tove Jansson’s second Moomin story. The eventful adventure centres on a mysterious comet that threatens the very existence of Moominvalley, the home of the Moomins, and the journey of discovery by Moomin and his friend Sniff across the Lonely Mountains. The story also introduces many much-loved Moomin characters.

In Moominvalley, there are no superheroes. Tove Jansson’s Moomin stories show us that we don’t need to face challenges alone, and in dark times, we should instead work together to bring out the best in ourselves, despite our differences.

We’re braver together.

Together with Snufkin, Moomin sets off on a night adventure. And it turns out nighttime is not so scary after all. It’s beautiful and welcoming: it’s when even the quietest of voices can be heard.

The colourful and quirky graphic novel series, Stories from Squirrel Valley welcomes readers to rainbowy Squirrelvalley and follows the nutty adventures of Ozzy the Squirrel and Chirp the Bird.

What makes this series stand out is the sweet but not saccharine style and humour with little jokes reminding of The Simpsons for a suitably young age group and the world which expands beyond Squirrel Valley in the future books.

This is Salvar. He’s 12 years old. He’s also the principal.

It started out as a joke: Salvar, a troublemaker, applied for the job as his school’s new principal and then forgot about it. It turned out he was the only applicant and got the job. Due to a software bug, the government had to let him keep the job.

With a head full of endless ideas (“Pizza and candy floss for lunch! “Every year, the students get to vote out one teacher!” ) on how to fix his horrible school, and armed with keys to every door in school and nothing to lose, Salvar is on top of the world with his best friend, Gudrun on his side. What’s the worst that could happen?

The Principal rocketed to the top of bestseller lists last autumn and was the second-best-selling book of the year in Iceland across all categories. This multi-award-winning hilarious, and well-crafted story has remained on the bestseller list since its release, and has been praised by the Icelandic press, in both print and on national TV.

“The author strikes a perfect balance between humour and seriousness. He touches on issues such as bullying and dyslexia, and weaves them well into the gripping storyline.”

It’s autumn break, and Mira plans to work extra hours at the riding school. There she encounters her favourite pony, Moon, who is always happy and hunting for treats. Moon also who helps her take her mind off her grandmother’s passing. But work is harder than she had expected.

When Mira accompanies the others from the stable to an amusement park on Halloween, she doesn’t know if she dares to enter the haunted house. Then again, what’s the worst thing that could happen?

“Sofie Sarenbrandt is the queen of crime fiction who has more strings to her bow; it takes sensitivity to be able to tell the story from Mira’s perspective, and the tone is just right.”

Somersault (Kollhnís)

Solar is an exciting and moving dystopian YA novel about danger, love, and glimmering hope. It’s a survival story set in Iceland, which becomes completely isolated, a society where all the rules have disappeared, and threat has become the main currency.

The story follows 15-year-old Unnar and her family as their lives are turned upside down when a massive solar flare hits Earth, followed by unprecedented ferocity as their community is plunged into darkness and chaos. In the midst of the disintegration, however, one can find solidarity, empathy, and warm feelings.

“The narrative is striking and leaves a lasting impression.”

LESTRARKLEFINN

“Sólgos is a well-written young adult book that urges readers to think about the past, present, and future. The plot is fast-paced and exciting, but it also asks challenging questions – questions that we should all be asking ourselves, young and old.”

LESTRARKLEFINN

Twelve-year-old Álfur is a gymnast from Kópavogur, Iceland. He’s a good friend, a lovely son, and the best big brother in the world. That is, until one day his mum and dad tell Álfur that his little brother Eiki has been diagnosed with autism. Now they won’t stop worrying about how this affects their lives and how others will perceive them. They also do not consider that Eiki is still Eiki, their son and Álfur’s little brother.

Álfur’s gymnastics practice offers a place of solace away from the sudden change at home. Yet Álfur wishes his family could be normal – or what he considers normal. He decides to sneak off to visit his estranged aunt, Harpa, the oncefamous gymnast who competed in the Olympics but left in disgrace. No one in the family talks to her anymore, but Álfur wants to reconnect with his aunt.

Somersault is a compelling story about growing up, life’s complexities, and how nothing is black and white. It is also about volatile emotions and the strong bond between two brothers. Spokespeople in the field of neuropsychology have endorsed the book.

(Lellikki)

WSOY / September 2025 / 272 pp.

A bittersweet story of a lonely, imaginative girl navigating the quiet cruelties of childhood and the complexities of human connection.

“Hyrri’s distinctive aesthetic is seamlessly intertwined with her illustrations, making her a unique and compelling artist.”

STATE PRIZE JURY

Juliana Hyrri, winner of the State Prize for Comic Art, explores power relations and morality with hopeful and playful tones.

Darling is the story of a lonely daydreamer girl who finds unconventional ways to cope with everyday life and relationships, drawing on Juliana Hyrri’s own experiences. It is a story of a childhood where bullying is often insidious.

”I am interested in how children understand the world. I’m deeply influenced by works such as William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, which explores the relationship between play and hierarchy, and Astrid Lindgren’s The Brothers Lionheart, which weaves together serious themes and magical elements,” says Hyrri, explaining the background to her comic.
