TOVE JANSSON (1914-2001) is a Finnish-Swedish writer and artist, who achieved worldwide fame as the creator of the Moomins, written and illustrated between 1945 and 1980. The books about the brave, adventurous, yet family-focused and home-loving Moomins have been translated into more than 50 languages and are still in print all over the world today. The Moomins were only a part of Jansson’s prodigious output. Already admired in Nordic art circles as a painter, cartoonist and illustrator, she would go on to write a series of classic novels and short stories. She remains Scandinavia’s best-loved author.

The Moomins and the Great Flood

(Småtrollen och den stora översvämningen) Förlaget M / 1945 / 64 pp.

The first story about the Moomins was originally published in 1945. This is the tale about Moominmamma and Moomintroll’s search for the missing Moominpappa and how the family found their way to Moominvalley.

To celebrate the 80th anniversary of the first Moomin book and the start of all the great Moomin adventures, Moomin Characters and Rights & Brands launch the Moomin 80 campaign on 24th October 2024.

The central theme of the book, the sense of belonging, is the key to the campaign and the values of inclusiveness, kindness, family and community are lifted from the original story.

An anniversary edition of The Moomins and the Great Flood with a foreword by Frank Cottrell Boyce and additional illustrated material is the flagship title of the anniversary publishing programme. Other titles, including a pop-up book The Moomins Find a Home, will be available through Rights & Brands and our publishing partners. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is the charity partner for Moomin 80.

In Moominvalley, the door is always open.

(Muumipeikko ja luottoystävä)

WSOY / October 2025 / 32 pp. / Age: 3+

A captivating story about the friendship between two different individuals.

Moomintroll would love to share everything with his best friend, but Snufkin sometimes feels as distant as the most remote island.

Moomintroll asks Snufkin to join him for a swim, but Snufkin has other things to do. Fair enough! Moomintroll gets frustrated and wanders off to the beach alone. Snufkin is his most trusted friend of all. But sometimes Moomintroll’s mind wanders: is he as important to Snufkin as Snufkin is to him?

Based on original illustrations by Tove Jansson, this new series of picture books explores important themes in life and big emotions. Reassuringly warm stories, with beautiful illustrations.

Moomintroll’s Nighttime Adventure

(Muumipeikko kohtaa pimeän)

WSOY / 2024 / 32 pp. / Age: 3+

A mysterious story of the sounds of the night that Moomintroll is brave enough to listen to. This book is about fear of the dark, restless nights and how the imagination plays tricks on the mind.

It’s a pitch-dark night. Moomintroll wakes up in the middle of his sleep to a strange noise. There’s someone out there! But it’s only the moon, shining through the window, and the yard is empty. Together with Snufkin, Moomin sets off on a night adventure. And it turns out nighttime is not so scary after all. It’s beautiful and welcoming: it’s when even the quietest of voices can be heard.

ILON WIKLAND (b. 1930) is an Estonian-born Swedish artist and illustrator. In 1944 she escaped the Soviet occupation of Estonia and arrived in Sweden as a 14-year-old refugee.

She was later educated at Swedish art school Konstfack and in 1953 Wikland applied for a job as an illustrator at Stockholm-based publisher Rabén & Sjögren, where she started working with Astrid Lindgren. Wikland has said that Lindgren’s writing makes her see inner pictures. She also derives inspiration for her pictures from real life. Wikland illustrates in the the same way that Astrid Lindgren wrote - for ’the child within her’.

The pair worked together for many years and Wikland has illustrated some of the most appreciated works by Lindgren, including Ronja the Robber’s Daughter, Madicken, Karlsson on the Roof, The Children on Troublemaker Street, and many more.

Ilon Wikland has donated over 600 of her original illustrations, now to be enjoyed at ”Ilon’s Wonderland”, a gallery and theme centre for children and families in Haapsalu, Estonia.

Over 1000 images and illustrations in a variety of techniques are available for publishing and licensing purposes from Rights & Brands. The text rights are with The Astrid Lindgren Company.

Suddenly, the friends find themselves caught up in a mystery: a pyromaniac is on the loose in their neighbourhood, and the police are baffled. Nike has to fight to overcome her fears and be braver than ever before.

“It’s well done, a tour de force for children’s literature indeed.”

Somersault (Kollhnís)

Mál og menning / 2022 / 259 pp. / Age: 12+

Solar is a gripping and powerful dystopian YA novel about danger, love, and glimmering hope for young dystopian fans. It’s a survival story set in Iceland which becomes completely isolated.

In the midst of preparations for the first dance of tenth grade, the electricity is cut out. The phone signal and WiFi disappear, cars stop working, and aeroplanes are grounded. Everyone is completely cut off, and darkness descends on the unprepared city of Reykjavik. After the first month, death rates rise, and everyone realises they are in for a long, chilling winter.

The story follows 15-year-old Unnar and her family as their lives are turned upside down when a massive solar flare hits Earth, followed by unprecedented ferocity as their community is plunged into darkness and chaos. Her budding relationship with new friend Tanja is a light in the darkness.

Solar is an intense and exciting story about a community where all the rules have evaporated and menace is the only currency. However, partnership, compassion and even love can be found within the chaos.

Twelve-year-old Álfur is a gymnast from Kópavogur, Iceland. He’s a good friend, a lovely son, and the best big brother in the world. That is until one day his mum and dad tell Álfur that his little brother Eiki has been diagnosed with autism. Now they won’t stop worrying about how this affects their lives and how they will appear to others. They also do not consider that Eiki is still Eiki, their son and Álfur’s little brother.

Álfur’s gymnastics practice offers a place of solace away from the sudden change at home. Yet, Álfur wishes that his family could be normal – or what he thinks is normal. He decides to sneak off to visit his estranged aunt Harpa, the once famous gymnast who competed in the Olympics but ended up leaving in disgrace. No one in the family talks to her anymore, but Álfur wants to reconnect with his aunt.

Somersault is a compelling story about growing up, life’s complexities, and how nothing is black and white. It is also about volatile emotions and the strong bond between two brothers.

The book was awarded the Icelandic Literature Prize in January 2023, and it has been endorsed by spokespeople in the neuropsychological field.

Darling

(Lellikki)

WSOY / September 2025 / 272 pp.

A bittersweet story of a lonely, imaginative girl navigating the quiet cruelties of childhood and the complexities of human connection.

“Hyrri’s distinctive aesthetic is seamlessly intertwined with her illustrations, making her a unique and compelling artist.”

STATE PRIZE JURY

Juliana Hyrri, winner of the State Prize for Comic Art, explores power relations and morality with hopeful and playful tones.

Darling is the story of a lonely daydreamer girl who finds unconventional ways to cope with everyday life and relationships, drawing on Juliana Hyrri’s own experiences. It is a story of a childhood where bullying is often insidious.

”I am interested in how children understand the world. I’m deeply influenced by works such as William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, which explores the relationship between play and hierarchy, and Astrid Lindgren’s The Brothers Lionheart, which weaves together serious themes and magical elements,” says Hyrri, explaining the background to her comic.

Ari the Barbarian series

Ari the Barbarian is a new and thrilling book series that will keep the entire family entertained. This search and find adventure with numerous tasks and detailed four-colour illustrations to explore will invite the reader to return again and again.

“The book also features the familiar search for small details from the Where’s Wally? books. The book is not a one-off, but one that children can trace their fingers through the labyrinths countless times. (...) Saaraisen’s lines are simple, but his illustration style is humorous. In the spirit of Mauri Kunnas, the illustrations are packed with peering eyes in the dark and other intriguing details. The mazes and puzzles may also encourage a reluctant reader to pick up the book.”
