TOVE JANSSON (1914-2001) is a Finnish-Swedish writer and artist, who achieved worldwide fame as the creator of the Moomins, written and illustrated between 1945 and 1980. The books about the brave, adventurous, yet family-focused and home-loving Moomins have been translated into more than 50 languages and are still in print all over the world today. The Moomins were only a part of Jansson’s prodigious output. Already admired in Nordic art circles as a painter, cartoonist and illustrator, she would go on to write a series of classic novels and short stories. She remains Scandinavia’s best-loved author.

The Moomins and the Great Flood

The first story about the Moomins was originally published in 1945. This is the tale about Moominmamma and Moomintroll’s search for the missing Moominpappa and how the family found their way to Moominvalley.

To celebrate the 80th anniversary of the first Moomin book and the start of all the great Moomin adventures, Moomin Characters and Rights & Brands launch the Moomin 80 campaign on 24th October 2024.

The central theme of the book, the sense of belonging, is the key to the campaign and the values of inclusiveness, kindness, family and community are lifted from the original story.

An anniversary edition of The Moomins and the Great Flood with a foreword by Frank Cottrell Boyce and additional illustrated material is the flagship title of the anniversary publishing programme. Other titles, including a pop-up book The Moomins Find a Home, will be available through Rights & Brands and our publishing partners. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is the charity partner for Moomin 80.

Moomintroll’s Nighttime Adventure

A mysterious story of the sounds of the night that Moomintroll is brave enough to listen to. This book is about fear of the dark, restless nights and how the imagination plays tricks on the mind.

It’s a pitch-dark night. Moomintroll wakes up in the middle of his sleep to a strange noise. There’s someone out there! But it’s only the moon, shining through the window, and the yard is empty. Together with Snufkin, Moomin sets off on a night adventure. And it turns out nighttime is not so scary after all. It’s beautiful and welcoming: it’s when even the quietest of voices can be heard.

ILON WIKLAND (b. 1930) is an Estonian-born Swedish artist and illustrator. In 1944 she escaped the Soviet occupation of Estonia and arrived in Sweden as a 14-year-old refugee.

She was later educated at Swedish art school Konstfack and in 1953 Wikland applied for a job as an illustrator at Stockholm-based publisher Rabén & Sjögren, where she started working with Astrid Lindgren. Wikland has said that Lindgren’s writing makes her see inner pictures. She also derives inspiration for her pictures from real life. Wikland illustrates in the the same way that Astrid Lindgren wrote - for ’the child within her’.

The pair worked together for many years and Wikland has illustrated some of the most appreciated works by Lindgren, including Ronja the Robber’s Daughter, Madicken, Karlsson on the Roof, The Children on Troublemaker Street, and many more.

Ilon Wikland has donated over 600 of her original illustrations, now to be enjoyed at ”Ilon’s Wonderland”, a gallery and theme centre for children and families in Haapsalu, Estonia.

Over 1000 images and illustrations in a variety of techniques are available for publishing and licensing purposes from Rights & Brands. The text rights are with The Astrid Lindgren Company.

Sammeli series

The classic picture books about Sammeli the dog are available again.

In the picture books about Sammeli the dog Ilon Wikland created both the text and illustrations herself. Ilon Wikland’s illustrations are vivid and detailed combined with stories inspired from her childhood days.

MAURI KUNNAS (b. 1950) is Finland’s most successful children’s book author today. He has published over 50 books, which have been translated into over 40 languages and sold nearly 10 million copies. KATRI KIRKKOPELTO (b. 1966) is an award-winning artist, illustrator and art teacher who has a special talent for tailoring serious content to appeal to young children. During the night, the friends discover that the strange noises are coming from the spooktwins Chatter and Babble. They are trying their best to be proper spooks and to give Molli, Little Pluck and Messy a good scare. But the twins’ constant bickering and lack of monster skills mostly amuse the friends. The duo most definitely needs help and advice with their spook business.

SANNA PELLICCIONI (b. 1976) is an award-winning Finnish illustrator, children’s book author and graphic designer based in Helsinki. She studied art, illustration and graphic design in Italy and Finland. Pelliccioni is one of Finland’s most prolific children’s authors and best known for her Onni series. Her works are featured in the ongoing Kollektivet – Picture Book Illustration from Finland exhibition.

AEVAR THOR BENEDIKTSSON (b. 1984) is an Icelandic actor and author of more than 30 books, most known for his bestselling Your Very Own Series, where the reader takes an active role in shaping the storyline. Benediktsson has won several awards for his books, including the Icelandic Children’s Book Award and The Bookseller’s Award. He is also an engaged promoter of reading and takes inspiration from the gaming world to attract young people to reading. For this, he has been nominated for the ALMA award twice and awarded by the Icelandic Ministry of Culture and Education.

ARNDÍS THÓRARINSDÓTTIR (b. 1982) is an award-winning Icelandic writer and translator.

Before becoming a full-time writer, Arndís worked as a journalist and critic and was the head of department at the library in Kópavogur. She writes for child-ren of all ages, but the most recent works are for middle grade and young adult readers. Whether her stories deal with emotional development and complexities of growing up or pacy adventures, they are always written with warmth and humour.
