FEATURE STORY
MAx Wagner: a small world Almost every baseball player has a hobby. Some fish. Others play an instrument. Off days often feature a foursome taking to the golf course. To get through a long, grueling season, an outlet away from the field and the facility is nearly a nonnegotiable requirement. For first-year RoughRider Max Wagner, his activity of choice still centers around the game.
MAx Wagner: a small world The infielder has enjoyed a breakout season on the diamond, helping Frisco win the first half after finding a second chance with the Texas Rangers organization. But, away from the ballpark, Wagner has developed a passion for collecting baseball cards, furthering his connection to the sport and, in an unexpected way, his teammates too. His hobby sparked up about a year ago, almost by accident. While playing in the Baltimore Orioles organization, Wagner was in Altoona, Pennsylvania for a road series in the Eastern League. With several hours to kill after a noon game and not a lot to do around town, Wagner and his teammates stumbled into a sports card shop.
MAx Wagner: a small world What started as an unsuspecting peek inside turned into a full-fledged foray into the collecting world. “I spent a lot of money on a lot of cards that whole entire week,” Wagner laughed. Wagner remembers the weight of pulling a rare, autographed card of Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Chandler Simpson, who he had played against in the Northwoods League while in college. “Ever since then, I’ve kind of been hooked,” he said. Since that moment, Wagner has sought out cards of players he’s played with or against, grabbing physical keepsakes of the guys across the diamond who impress him. The Green Bay, Wis. native even posts about his collection on a card-specific Instagram account, @wagz_collex, buying and selling cards with other creators and documenting his favorite additions.
MAx Wagner: a small world For Wagner, card collecting is not simply about owning valuable pieces of memorabilia. It is another way to appreciate the game, the players around him and his journey through the Minor Leagues. “I always try and pick up guys that I play against,” he said. “If I feel like, alright, this guy is a pretty good ballplayer, I should maybe pick up some of his cards.” For example, after facing Seattle Mariners’ pitching prospect Ryan Sloan in a series against the Arkansas Travelers earlier this season, Wagner came away quite bullish on the right-hander’s future.
MAx Wagner: a small world “I picked up two of his cards right away,” Wagner said. “I was like, this dude is going to be something someday.” Before he ever put on a RoughRider uniform or took the field as a member of the Rangers organization, Wagner was sitting at home and watching what’s called a “live break” – an online livestream in which the host opens boxes of baseball cards and viewers have a chance to buy some of the cards that are pulled. As Wagner tuned in, he saw the breaker pull a card of a player whose name he remembered from watching the College World Series on ESPN, complete with their autograph. The host was asking $10 for it and Wagner pulled the trigger with no knowledge of what would follow his seemingly straightforward purchase. That player? None other than Frisco’s starting center fielder, Dylan Dreiling.
MAx Wagner: a small world A few months later, following his release by Baltimore, Wagner signed a Minor League free agent contract with the Rangers and was assigned to the RoughRiders within a week. Wagner walloped four home runs in his first three games with Frisco to kick off what would turn into a career year and became roommates with Dreiling in the process. As the season has progressed, the two have become good friends and even shared the card collecting hobby, taking time together to go to the Dallas Card Show over the AllStar Break. On the field, the two newfound friends have combined for 39 home runs and are the two team leaders as of August 24, both enjoying career years while proving what a small world it is indeed. Wagner admits he does think about the fact that every homer Dreiling hits boosts the value of his originally $10 card, as the former second-round pick leads the RoughRiders in nearly every offensive category.
MAx Wagner: a small world “I’ll never tell him that, though,” Wagner said. “Gotta keep him humble.” At the end of the day, that’s not why Wagner collects cards. They’re not meant to be money-makers, but instead mementos of his time spent in the Minors and hopefully, one day, the Major Leagues. In this case, the Dreiling card serves as a story Wagner can tell about the 2026 season, which will culminate with a playoff appearance and championship chase with Dreiling by his side in the lineup. It represents a fresh start in the Rangers organization, a newfound friendship and a career year at the plate. For Wagner, that’s priceless.
