PIECE NOTE: "Beneath the Green" is an exploration of "Olive Tree" by Bachar Mar-Khalifé. The composer wrote "It all began under the OLIVE TREE a drawing, a quiet light slipping through the leaves." It is these words, and this music, that I have endeavored to amplify. To be beneath something living is to know a particular kind of stillness sheltered, held, rooted in place. Yet within Mar-Khalifé's music there is also a gentle, persistent rocking a 1, 2, 3 that pulls like a current beneath still water. This work lives in that paradox: grounded and adrift at once, like a body floating in the ocean, surrendered to the rhythm of something much larger than itself. Movement that is natural, organic, and held by the earth even as it sways.
