In a landslide, Sharon Daly wins a village trustee seat By JUAN LASSO jlasso@liherald.com
Trustee Sharon Daly, a political newcomer, cruised to victory in Tuesday’s village special election, according to unofficial results, handily defeating challenger Anthony Bonelli. The win cements her position on the board after she was appointed to fill the seat left vacant by Trustee Sean Wright more than a month ago to take the bench in Nassau County’s 2nd District Court. A longtime community leader and wellconnected Republican operative, Daly dominated the race with 89 percent of the vote. “I am humbled by the support I have received from the people of Valley Stream,”
Daly said in a statement, “and look forward to working with the village board to represent all residents of this community I love.” Bonelli expressed doubts about the election’s fairness, calling it “suppressed.” “Edwin Fare says Village Hall, in central Valley Stream, is the obvious location to vote — the area where Republicans dominate over Democrats,” Bonelli said. With just 1,150 of the village’s 28,800 registered voters casting ballots — barely 4 percent — and fewer than 500 voting in person, turnout was nearly 26 percent lower than in last year’s election. The numbers seemingly validate concerns among voting experts who warned that consolidating polling places would depress participation.
