alley Stream’s many community organizations are woven into the fabric of village life, working behind the scenes and on the front lines to make a difference. From caring for public spaces and preserving local history to supporting children and families in need, these groups help strengthen the village and enrich the lives of those who call it home.
Courtesy Cathryn Natoli The Valley Stream Beautification Committee’s initiatives include planting and gardening in addition to litter cleanups throughout the village.
Landscaping the village with the Valley Stream Beautification Committee Formed in 2020, the Valley Stream Beautification Committee’s mission is to enhance life in the village and bolster pride in the community by improving and creating public landscapes. This includes identifying areas in need of improvement, developing and implementing projects, recruiting volunteers and securing funds to accomplish its mission. The committee works with village departments and administrators, and members offer leadership and guidance regarding community design. The committee holds cleanup events throughout the village, including at the Village Green and Hendrickson Park. These cleanups focus on removing litter from public spaces. Student volunteers from Valley Stream Central High School’s Earth Advocates Club work closely with the committee, including during cleanups. A community garden was established in 2025 by the committee in partnership with and support from Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages, the village and Cornell Cooperative Extension of Nassau County. Other projects include incorporating native plantings at Hendrickson Park and the creation and maintenance of the Arlington Orchard at Arlington Park. 12 Valley Stream Community Guide www.liherald.com

Along with the Kiwanis clubs of Lynbrook and Island Park, the Kiwanis Club of Valley Stream hosted a comedy fundraiser at Governors Comedy Club in Levittown. The event raised money for the New York District Kiwanis governor’s project, an initiative that this year focused on supporting children in foster care. Valley Stream Kiwanis also supports local veterans, among other endeavors. The club partnered with the Long Island Cares West Nassau Center for Food Assistance and Community Support in 2025 to assemble care packages for veterans facing hardship. he Henry Waldinger Memorial Library been a vital part of the Valley Stream community for more than nine decades. The library offers a wide range of reading materials and programming, including activities and assistance for children, teens and adults, free passes to museums and other locations, and free Wi-Fi and computer access. Additional services include deliveries for homebound patrons, talking book and Braille services, computer classes, job search and resume assistance, online tutoring, tax help and more. The Valley Stream library grew from humble beginnings. In July 1932,Valley Stream residents began discussing the creation of a library for the village. The group raised money through donations from individuals and community organizations, as well as through card parties — gatherings where guests paid to play card games and the proceeds were donated. The library opened in December 1932, but not at the Verona Place location where it stands today. At the time, it consisted of two rooms above a store at Rockaway Avenue and Valley Stream Boulevard. The library’s growing popularity soon called for a larger home, prompting a move two years later to a former vegetable and produce store on Rockaway Avenue. In 1942, it relocated again, this time to a former gas and electric building, also on Rockaway Avenue. Seven years later, in 1949, the library officially became a public institution, supported by village funding. As the Valley Stream Public Library continued to thrive, the Village Board of Trustees approved the construction of a new library building, which was started and completed in 1962. That building, at 60 Verona Place, remains the library's home today. 32

Valley Stream Mayor Henry Waldinger and Library Board President George W. Wandell laid the cornerstone of the new building during a ceremony officiated by Waldinger on Nov. 17, 1962. A formal dedication ceremony took place Dec. 2, and residents began checking out books Dec. 3. Waldinger died in 1966. To honor Valley Stream's first mayor, the library was renamed the Henry Waldinger Memorial Library in 1968. Since then, the building has undergone numerous renovations, both major and minor, to enhance the experience for generations of patrons. As technology took hold, the library kept pace. Other changes have included the replacement of the physical library card catalog with an online catalog of books and other materials in 1997 and the introduction of a STEAM Makerspace Room containing a 3D printer and other electronic robotic equipment Herald file photo in 2019. Books and activities introduce local children to library offerings. As of today, the library provides a space for people of all ages not only to read, but also to learn, create, work, and relax. According to the library's 2024-25 annual report, patrons borrowed more than 85,000 physical items, including books, magazines and CDs, and more than 27,400 digital items, including e-books, e-magazines and online audiobooks. The library recorded 70,694 visits, and 15,027 people have library cards. It is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. and closed Sunday. Exploring Valley Stream’s green spaces By Angelina Zingariello

ne of the village’s standout features is its wealth of outdoor spaces. From a sprawling state park that attracts visitors from across Long Island to neighborhood playgrounds tucked between busy streets, these inviting destinations give residents room to exercise, gather, unwind and enjoy the outdoors. Parks throughout the village offer more than opportunities for recreation. They also serve as community landmarks that help shape Valley Stream’s identity.
Courtesy Office Of Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages Dozens of volunteers gathered at Valley Stream State Park for the annual “I Love My Park Day,” a statewide initiative focused on improving and celebrating public lands.
Valley Stream State Park Valley Stream State Park is the largest and most prominent green space in the area. Operated by New York State, the nearly 100-acre park features picnic areas, sports fields, playgrounds, and nature trails. Families frequently visit for birthday parties, weekend gatherings or simply to spend a sunny afternoon outdoors. The park is known for its two short nature trails, the Squirrel Nut and Hickory Nut trails, which are popular with children and beginner hikers. During the winter, the park also supports cross-country skiing, making it a year-round destination. Located just steps from residential neighborhoods, this is one of the most accessible state parks on Long Island. For Valley Stream residents, the park serves as both a backyard retreat and a regional attraction. 2026 - 2027 37 Valley Stream Community Guide
Barrett Park Barrett Park is a smaller but important community spot. It is best known as the home of Camp Barrett, the village’s summer program for children. With open lawns, shaded areas and playground equipment, the park is a natural gathering place for families. During the summer, it comes alive with activity as campers participate in games and outdoor projects. Throughout the rest of the year, Barrett Park offers a quieter, neighborhoodCourtesy Camp Barrett friendly setting where Camp Barrett welcomed its campers back for the six-week outdoor camp, serving Village of residents can take a walk, Valley Stream residents and the Valley Stream Central High School District. enjoy the fresh air or bring children to play. Its close connection to the village’s recreational programming makes it one of Valley Stream’s more vibrant parks.
Arlington Park Arlington Park is a classic neighborhood playground tucked into a residential neighborhood. Smaller than some of Valley Stream’s other green spaces, it features swings, slides and open areas for unstructured play. For nearby families, this is a convenient option for after-school visits or weekend outings. Arlington's smaller scale makes it especially popular with young children, who can enjoy the playground equipment without the activity of a larger facility. A.J. Hendrickson Park A.J. Hendrickson Park is one of Valley Stream’s larger village-run spots and sits adjacent to the Community Center and village pool. The park features walking paths, open lawns and access to recreational facilities, making it a popular destination for Stu Goldman/Herald exercise and relaxation. Family members Trinayani Talukdar, Trishnu Mallik, Shampa Hari, Ivaan Sen, Aadami Sen, Prishan Mallik and Tridiva Mallik celebrate with Mr. and Mrs. Bunny. Families often pair visits to the pool or Community Center with a walk through the grounds, adding to its versatility. Its central location also makes Hendrickson Park a frequent site for community events, concerts and seasonal gatherings. The park serves as both an everyday destination for walkers and joggers and a special events venue that helps shape the village's social life.
Juan Alzamora/Herald Nassau County Legislator Scott M. Davis, left, Nassau County Legislator Cynthia Nuñez, New York State Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages and Nassau County Legislator Olena Nicks took part in a celebration at A.J. Hendrickson Park.
Firemen’s Memorial Field Firemen’s Memorial Field is a central recreational and commemorative space that combines athletic facilities with areas for community gatherings. The park includes multiple sports fields suitable for soccer, baseball and other youth and adult leagues, along with open lawns where residents can relax, exercise or enjoy picnics. Memorial elements dedicated to the village’s firefighters honor their service and sacrifice. The field also hosts organized sporting events, fitness programs and occasional special gatherings. Its mix of recreational amenities and commemorative features makes this a meaningful and frequently used space for residents of all ages. 2026 - 2027 39 Valley Stream Community Guide
