A letter from the

publisher

Welcome to this year's Valley Stream Community Guide your comprehensive resource for everything that brings our village to life as a vibrant, welcoming place to call home.

We are pleased to present this special annual supplement to the Valley Stream Herald and to continue our tradition of publishing the Valley Stream Community Guide conceived to celebrate, inform and connect with our community. Whether you’re a lifelong resident or just settling in, this guide is your passport to all things local.

Inside you’ll find a curated snapshot of what makes Valley Stream so special:

• Scenic parks and green spaces

• Standout schools

• Unmissable community events

Consider this your “owner’s manual” whether you’re looking to explore, connect to, or rediscover the hometown magic.

This year’s cover shines the spotlight on the Valley Stream Green Hornet’s cheerleading team, now in its 75th year, at the village Centennial Parade. Cheer Coach Cayla St. Arromand led the squad and young cheerers Chloe Forte, Lea Gonzalez and Alexis Gillespie who embody the enthusiasm that unites the community. Their presence powerfully symbolizes the village’s enduring traditions and intergenerational continuity.

The dedicated efforts of numerous local organizations actively foster neighborly connection throughout the year. The Valley Stream Chamber of Commerce is vital to these efforts, supporting local businesses and organizing professional networking events, while the Valley Stream Historical Society preserves the village's heritage by operating the PaganFletcher Restoration, offering programming and exhibits. Others such as the Valley Stream Latino Society promote diversity by celebrating and sharing the language and traditions of Hispanic and Latino Americans. The village also offers a robust calendar of events from the annual Community Fest celebrating local life to civic and cultural initiatives providing continuous opportunities to gather, participate and promote strong civic pride.

This guide is brought to you in partnership with the Valley Stream Chamber of Commerce, and we’re honored once again to serve as the chamber’s official publication. We hope you find the Valley Stream Community Guide both useful and inspiring and we thank you for making the Valley Stream Herald part of your week, every week.

GreetinGs from mayor fare

Dear Friends,

It is my pleasure to extend greetings on behalf of our entire Village Board, myself, Deputy Mayor Dermond Thomas, Trustees John Tufarelli , Kevin Waszak and Sharon Daly, as well as Village Justice Melanie Jenkins and Village Clerk James Hunter.

As we wind down Valley Stream’s exciting Centennial year, we welcome this latest edition of the Valley Stream Guide.

Everyone knows that Valley Stream is a great place to live, and as a result our population has grown to more than 40,000. New neighbors learn very quickly what long-time Valley Streamers have always known — that our community is very special indeed. We are the third largest incorporated village in the entire State of New York, and proud of our designation as the “Best Place to Live In New York!”

Although it is a mere 30 minutes away from midtown Manhattan,Valley Stream is truly a beautiful suburban oasis, rich in recreational, social and community character. We are home to more than 100 acres of beautiful parkland, affording our residents lots of green open spaces. From baseball, football and soccer fields to basketball, tennis and pickle-ball courts, and a popular state-of-the-art pool complex,Valley Stream is a dream come true for athletes of every age.

Our Village staff works hard to provide great services so that there is truly something for everyone in Valley Stream. Recreational opportunities abound. The summer months bring an outstanding array of outdoor concerts and the popular Barrett summer camp program. Throughout the year there are always plenty of seasonal activities for all to enjoy.

Abounding in civic spirit,Valley Stream is fortunate to have a uniquely dedicated group of citizens who donate their time and talents to the betterment of our community. Our Village’s volunteers include the members of the Historical Society, the brave men and women of the Fire Department, first-rate Auxiliary Police and Civilian Patrols, and organizations catering to residents of all ages, from scouts and youth athletes to our Silver Threads.

Our website at valleystreamny.gov, as well as our social media platforms, provide a great way to keep informed of everything that is going on around Valley Stream. The Mayor’s Helpline (1-855-99MAYOR) is another way to let us know of any concerns our residents may have.

As a lifelong Valley Streamer, I am proud to call this Village my home. The entire Village Board joins me in urging you to take advantage of all that is offered here!

Sincerely,

Edwin Fare

a message from the Valley stream Chamber president

Greetings!

The Valley Stream Chamber of Commerce is an organization composed of local businesses and their owners, community organizations and educational institutions. Our members have the opportunity to meet monthly to network, meet local leaders and learn about local issues.

In addition to promoting the interests of the business community, the Chamber also strives for community involvement in many ways, some of which the public may not be aware.

We award scholarships to graduating high school seniors, sponsor community events such as the Rockaway Avenue Summer Car Show, concert series, Community Fest, Pumpkin Painting Contest and Winterfest. Chamber members have also participated in career days

with the local schools. This year the Chamber also started holding food truck events at the Village pool parking lot.

The Chamber has also worked in conjunction with the Village Administration to obtain grants to support the downtown and beautify the community.

We also arrange ribbon cuttings to welcome new businesses and march in the Memorial Day Parade.

As president of Valley Stream Chamber of Commerce, I would like to thank our member businesses for their continued support of our organization and I’d like to remind our community to shop local. Our businesses are the backbone of our community.

in the village

Life in Valley Stream is enriched by a range of community traditions that bring residents together in familiar and welcoming settings.

Throughout the year, the village organizes events that combine recreation, entertainment and civic pride, often drawing people of all ages to its central gathering spaces. These occasions highlight the value placed on shared experiences, whether through live performances, outdoor celebrations or family-friendly festivities.

What makes them special is not only the activity itself, but also the sense of belonging they create, offering residents a chance to connect with neighbors and take part in the collective life of the village.

Classic Car Show on Rockaway Avenue

Every summer, Rockaway Avenue in downtown Valley Stream comes alive for the annual Classic Car Show, a community tradition that draws car enthusiasts and families alike.

Collectors from across Long Island bring a wide range of vehicles, including antique roadsters, vintage muscle cars and carefully restored classics. The event offers more than just a chance to admire automobiles — it features live music, food vendors and a lively street-fair atmosphere.

Attendees can talk with owners, learn about restoration projects and share in the nostalgia. Free and open to all, the show has become one of Valley Stream’s most popular events.

Stu Goldman/Herald photos Rockaway Avenue transforms into an open-air showcase during the annual Classic Car Show, with vintage vehicles lining the street for visitors to admire.

Summer Concerts

The Summer Concert Series at the Valley Stream Village Green Bandshell is a longstanding tradition that brings the community together for free performances. Held on Wednesday evenings throughout the summer months, the series features a diverse lineup of musical genres, including classical, jazz and popular music. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets to comfortably enjoy the music in a relaxed, openair setting.

The concerts provide an opportunity for residents to socialize, appreciate live music and celebrate the vibrant cultural life of Valley Stream.

Valley Stream Community Fest

The Valley Stream Community Fest is an annual event that celebrates the spirit of the village through a day of fun, food and festivity.

Typically held in late September, the fest features local vendors, entertainment, food trucks and activities for all ages. It's a time for residents to come together, enjoy the autumn weather and support local businesses and organizations.

The event has become a staple in the community, offering a vibrant atmosphere that showcases the unity and diversity of Valley Stream.

The festival brings residents together to enjoy the festive season through a variety of seasonal activities and community gatherings suitable for all ages. Institutions that shape

Valley Stream is a village with a rich history of community engagement, public service and cultural stewardship.

Its civic institutions have long served as the backbone of local life, providing residents with essential services, educational resources, recreational opportunities and spaces for connection and collaboration. From the village library that fosters lifelong learning, to the fire department safeguarding homes and families, to the historical society preserving the village’s past, these organizations embody the values of responsibility, volunteerism and community pride.

Many of these institutions have been active for decades, shaping the social and cultural landscape of Valley Stream while adapting to the evolving needs of its residents. They provide more than just services; they offer a sense of continuity, identity and shared purpose that strengthens the village’s fabric.

Henry Waldinger Memorial Library

The Henry Waldinger Memorial Library, established in 1962 and renamed in 1968 after Valley Stream’s first mayor, is a central hub for learning and community engagement. Located at 60 Verona Place, it provides books, digital resources and public programs for all ages. Story hours, workshops, book clubs, and educational events foster literacy and lifelong learning, while meeting spaces host lectures and small exhibitions.

The library adapts to changing technology and community needs, serving as both an educational resource and cultural center. Residents rely on it as a place to read, learn, connect, and engage with the village’s intellectual and civic life.

Herald file photo A quiet corner inside the library, where generations of residents have come to read, learn, and gather.

Valley Stream Historical Society

Founded in 1973, the Valley Stream Historical Society preserves and shares the village’s heritage.

Operating from the Pagan-Fletcher Restoration at 143 Hendrickson Ave., it maintains artifacts, photographs and historical documents, and hosts tours, exhibits, lectures, and school programs. The Society emphasizes oral histories, capturing residents’ personal stories alongside tangible artifacts.

Volunteers lead events, research and outreach, connecting the community with its past. By commemorating milestones and fostering awareness of Valley Stream’s development, the Historical Society promotes civic pride and understanding. It provides residents a meaningful link to the village’s history, ensuring that the community’s legacy is remembered and celebrated.

Valley Stream Fire Department

The Valley Stream Fire Department, established in 1898, has been a cornerstone of community safety for over a century.

Originally formed by local volunteers concerned with fire risks, the department now operates from multiple stations, with professional and volunteer firefighters providing fire suppression, emergency medical services and public safety education.

Beyond emergency response, it engages the community through school programs, demonstrations and outreach initiatives. Over the years, the department has adapted to modern technology and regional coordination efforts, while fundraisers and events strengthen community ties. It remains a symbol of protection, service and civic pride in Valley Stream.

vital organizations in

Valley Stream is home to numerous civic groups that keep the community connected and thriving. While the village itself provides important services, these organizations are powered by volunteers who step up to meet local needs, organize events and give residents a voice in shaping their neighborhood. From long-standing service clubs with global ties to grassroots committees focused on beautification, all create opportunities for anyone who wants to get involved.

Valley Stream Lions Club

The Valley Stream Lions Club is a local chapter of Lions Clubs International, dedicated to service and humanitarian projects.

The club participates in fundraisers, flea markets and seasonal events while supporting vision programs, food drives and environmental clean-ups. Members meet regularly to plan initiatives and engage with the community.

Backed by an international network, the club connects local volunteer efforts to a global mission. Residents can join to contribute to meaningful causes and build friendships. The club shares event details online and in local bulletins, making it easy for newcomers to get involved.

Kiwanis Club of Valley Stream

The Kiwanis Club of Valley Stream focuses on supporting children and youth leadership.

Members organize events, fundraise for pediatric health initiatives and partner with youth programs like Key Club to teach teens the value of community service. Activities include tree plantings, holiday drives, charity breakfasts, and social gatherings.

By combining philanthropy with mentorship, the club models leadership for younger residents while fostering civic engagement. Connected to Kiwanis International, the local chapter has resources and guidance to amplify its impact. Families and individuals can participate directly in projects that benefit children and strengthen the community.

Valley Stream Beautification Committee

The Valley Stream Beautification Committee works to enhance public spaces and promote environmental stewardship.

Operated by the village, it coordinates volunteer clean-ups, plantings and small community garden and park projects. Residents can sign up through the village website to help with tasks like flower planting, litter removal and minor public art initiatives.

The committee encourages visible contributions that improve the neighborhood while fostering pride and engagement. By participating, residents have the chance to make a tangible impact on local surroundings.

The committee demonstrates how civic involvement and environmental care can combine to enrich the village.

Parks and green spaces

One of Valley Stream’s best features is its access to green space. From a large state-run park that attracts visitors from across Long Island to smaller neighborhood playgrounds tucked between busy streets, these outdoor areas give residents room to breathe, exercise and gather.

Parks throughout the village are not only places for recreation but also serve as landmarks that anchor the community’s identity.

Valley Stream State Park

Valley Stream State Park is the largest and most prominent green space in the area. Operated by New York State, the park covers nearly 100 acres and offers picnic areas, sports fields, playgrounds, and nature trails.

Families often come here for birthday parties, weekend gatherings, or simply to enjoy a sunny afternoon outdoors.

The park is known for its two short nature trails, the Squirrel Nut and Hickory Nut trails, which are popular with children and beginner hikers. In winter, the park even supports cross-country skiing, making it a true yearround destination.

Its location just steps from residential neighborhoods makes it one of the most accessible state parks on Long Island. For Valley Stream residents, it is both a backyard park and a regional attraction.

Angelina Zingariello/Herald Folks joined in a line dancing session during the inaugural Juneteenth celebration at Valley Stream State Park.

Barrett Park

Barrett Park is a smaller but equally important community space. It is best known as the home of Camp Barrett, the village’s summer program for children.

The park has open lawns, shaded areas and playground equipment, making it a natural gathering spot for families. During the summer months, it buzzes with activity as campers take part in games and outdoor projects.

The rest of the year, it remains a quiet, neighborhood-friendly park where residents can take a walk, enjoy the fresh air or let children play on the equipment.

Its close connection to recreational programming makes it one of the more vibrant parks in the village.

Arlington Park

Arlington Park is a classic neighborhood playground tucked into a residential section of the village.

It’s smaller than some of the other parks, but provides swings, slides and open areas for unstructured play. For nearby families, it functions as a quick and convenient option for afterschool visits or weekend outings.

The park’s scale makes it especially popular with young children, who can enjoy the equipment without the busyness of a larger facility.

Arlington Park may not attract visitors outside the neighborhood, but it plays an important role as a local pocket park that anchors its surrounding neighborhood.

A.J. Hendrickson Park

A.J. Hendrickson Park is one of Valley Stream’s larger village-run spaces and sits adjacent to the Community Center and village pool.

It features walking paths, open lawns and access to recreational facilities, making it a popular spot for both exercise and relaxation. Families often combine trips to the pool or community center with strolls through the park, making it a versatile destination.

The park’s central location also makes it a frequent host for community events, concerts, and seasonal gatherings. As a result, Hendrickson Park is both a daily-use space for walkers and joggers and a special-events venue that helps define the social life of the village.

Firemen’s Memorial Field

Firemen’s Memorial Field is a central recreational and commemorative space in Valley Stream, combining athletic facilities with areas for community gatherings.

The park includes multiple sports fields suitable for soccer, baseball and other youth and adult leagues, as well as open lawns where residents can relax, exercise or enjoy picnics.

Dedicated memorial elements honor the village’s firefighters, serving as a reminder of their service and sacrifice. The field hosts organized sporting events, fitness programs and occasional special gatherings.

Its combination of recreational amenities and commemorative features makes Firemen’s Memorial Field a meaningful and well-used space for residents of all ages.

Christine Rivera/Herald Tony Arum, left, George Schuchman, William Rowe, Joe Santana, and Ron Feltington honor past and present commanders of Valley Stream American Legion Post 854.

In many ways, putting out a newspaper each week is an interactive process. We need your participation to do our job, so we offer you — our readers and partners — a reminder of how and when to reach us.

To tell us what’s going on in your community, or news of upcoming events sponsored by civic, service, religious or community organizations, the deadline is 10 a.m. the Friday prior to publication. Notices are printed free of charge, and should be emailed to jlasso@liherald.com.

We also welcome the news of your family life, your business life and your social life. We accept, at no charge, obituaries and Neighbors in the News items, including awards, honors, births, graduations, marriages and promotions.

We value your opinions, and provide a forum for them in our popular Letters to the Editor space.

The Herald also offers tours of its Garden City headquarters and printing plant for schools, scouts and other community groups. To schedule a tour, contact Michael Romero at (516) 569-4000, Ext. 235 or email mromero@liherald.com.
