Audience members were transported to the 1950s with Woodmere Middle School Drama Club’s production of the classic show “Bye Bye Birdie, on March 11, 13 and 14” “Bye Bye Birdie” is a 1960 Tony-winning musical satire that follows rock ‘n’ roll star Conrad Birdie — inspired by Elvis Presley’s

1957 army drafting — as he gives one last televised kiss to a fan before joining the army. Written by Michael Stewart (book), Charles Strouse (music), and Lee Adams (lyrics), the show highlights 1950s youth culture, media, and generational gaps. The show features famous songs such as: “Put on a

Happy Face,” “The Telephone Hour,” “A Lot of Livin’ to Do,” “Kids,” “How Lovely to Be a Woman,” and “Honestly Sincere”.

The musical premiered on Broadway in 1960 and was adapted into a famous 1963 film starring Ann-Margret. — Melissa Berman
