Giving back, building community
T
hroughout Sea Cliff and Glen Head, local organizations strengthen the fabric of North Shore life through service, generosity and civic engagement. Whether protecting the environment, bringing neighbors together through special events, awarding scholarships or supporting those in need, these groups demonstrate how volunteerism and giving back continue to make a lasting impact.
Protecting our waters with the Coalition to Save Hempstead Harbor With its roots in Sea Cliff, the Coalition to Save Hempstead Harbor works to identify and eliminate environmental threats in and around Hempstead Harbor. The organization was founded in 1986, and its goal is to increase public interest in restoring the harbor promoting sustainable practices to aid its protection Photos by Julia Capitelli/Herald and resiliency. The Coalition to Save Hempstead Harbor raises Eastern Oysters in its oyster gardening initiative each summer. A major project the coalition undertakes each year is its oyster gardening initiative. It was introduced in 2022 to help restore local waters by raising oysters in cages across three locations in the harbor. A fourth location has since been added. Eastern Oysters are raised during the project, which takes place from July through September. This species filters water, improving its quality, and can provide habitats and protection for other marine species. The coalition also hosts an annual cleanup of Scudders Pond, monitors local horseshoe crab populations and engages with the community’s students to get them involved in environmental protection efforts.
Love Your Neighbor Project hosts Porchfest, its largest fundraiser, each May.
Spreading the love with Love Your Neighbor Project This Sea Cliff-based nonprofit aims to bring people together, promote connection efforts by community members and help neighbors in need. It holds events and fundraisers throughout the year to bolster community connection and make it possible to support residents monetarily. 12

Porchfest is a major fundraiser for Love Your Neighbor Project. Held each May, local bands and artists perform on porches throughout Sea Cliff. In 2026, the event raised more than $30,000 to support the nonprofit’s work. Pride Stride is held each June in celebration of Pride Month. It includes a parade and after-party, bringing the community together and promoting diversity and acceptance. 2026 marked the third Pride Stride, which has become more Sea Cliff-
focused since it first launched in 2024. Love Your Neighbor Project contributes to GoFundMe fundraisers that have been opened to support neighbors who may be struggling. The organization also offers scholarships to graduating seniors at North Shore High School, awarding sums of money to three students who have made an impact in their community. One grant is also awarded to a club within the North Shore School District making a humanitarian or environmental difference.
Julia Capitelli/Herald The Sea Cliff Civic Association honors residents who have gone above and beyond in their volunteer work with the White Cap Awards.
Sea Cliff Civic Association and Glen Head-Glenwood Landing Civic Council Civic organizations play an important role in Sea Cliff, Glen Head and Glenwood Landing, keeping residents informed, engaged and connected. Through community events, outreach and advocacy, these groups help address local concerns and strengthen the ties that bring neighbors together. The Sea Cliff Civic Association hosts events for the community year-round, including activities for children. Literary events like theatrical adaptations of “A Christmas Carol” and James Joyce’s “Ulysses” bring people together for performances featuring local actors. A series of concerts featuring local bands, titled “Sunset Serenade,” runs each summer, attracting Sea Cliff residents and music lovers from elsewhere. Independence Day is celebrated with a 2026 - 2027
gala on the village green and a United States birthday party for the community’s children. Every year, the Sea Cliff Civic Association hosts a Meet the Candidates night prior to the village election, inviting residents to hear candidate speeches and ask questions. The organization also honors residents each year with its White Cap Awards, recognizing those who have gone above and beyond in their volunteer service to the village. The Glen Head-Glenwood Landing Civic Council oversees the local civic associations in these communities, keeping residents up to date on projects, issues and events. The council advocates on behalf on residents at the local, state and federal levels. Community outreach includes amplifying events like the Town of Oyster Bay’s Music Under the Stars summer concert and movies series, providing information on roadwork and construction and updates on advocacy and work with elected officials.

Sea Cliff Village Library Sea Cliff’s main library has been in operation for more than 130 years. It originally opened in 1894, but did not become village-operated until 1927. The Sea Cliff Village Library, at 300 Sea Cliff Ave., connects to Village Hall and the Village Museum.Varied programming includes “Tech-Talk: Technology Training for Non-Techies,” and “The Chronicles of Yarnia,” a weekly knitting and crocheting activity. Former Sea Cliff Mayor Ed Lieberman holds periodic educational presentations for the community on topics ranging from Vincent van Gogh to the United States’ semiquincentennial anniversary. For National Poetry Month in April, the library held an open poetry reading. All were welcome to attend and read original poems or existing works. This year marked a return of the event after a several-year hiatus that began in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The library also hosts art exhibits in conjunction with the Sea Cliff Arts Council. Featuring pieces like paintings and sculptures, the library’s main room has hosted exhibits by local artists and students in the community. A partnership with North Shore High School's National Honor Society brings a homework club to the library, where high school volunteers assist younger students with their studies, providing academic assistance. 20

Exploring literature with the Sea Cliff Civic Association Held at Foster Restaurant in late summer, the civic association’s Great Gatsby Gala takes attendees on a trip back to the Roaring ‘20s. The evening is filled with music, Gatsby skits and trivia. Appetizers, dinner, dessert and a cash bar are also available. Attendees are encouraged to dress in 1920s attire. In celebration of Bloomsday, the civic association puts on a James Joyce Jaunt featuring local actors. Sun, sand and serenades at Sea Cliff and Glen Head parks By Julia Capitelli
N
orth Shore beaches and hidden parks serve as recreational spaces for Sea Cliff and Glen Head residents. Sea Cliff’s beach and many parks offer a scenic experience for residents and visitors. Glen Head and Glenwood Landing hamlets are home to Francis M. Gaynor Park and Harry Tappen Beach. While activity may kick up in the summer, parks are certainly popular year round.
Residents and neighbors enjoy the Friday summer concert series at Sea Clilff Beach.
Herald file photo
Music and family fun at Sea Cliff Beach The operating season officially starts Memorial Day weekend and ends Labor Day weekend at Sea Cliff Municipal Beach. The village maintains the beach and has a committee that organizes recreational activities on the beach during the summer. Visitors to the beach between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends must be Sea Cliff residents. Certified lifeguards staff the beach 30
during the season. Containing a playground and snack bar and offering swim lessons, the beach is a child-friendly location for families. The Sea Cliff Beach Events Committee and the village organize a series of Friday night concerts. Local bands and artists perform on the beach’s stage throughout the summer.

Julia Capitelli/Herald Local bands and artists perform at Clifton Park as part of the Sea Cliff Civic Association’s Sunset Serenade series each summer.
Hidden green gems
In its 1-square mile, Sea Cliff contains 16 neighborhood parks. Among the most popular are Memorial Park and Clifton Park. It takes some exploring to locate some of the village’s smaller parks, along with its historic 18 Trails walkways throughout Sea Cliff leftover from when it was a 19th century vacation town. Memorial Park, also known to residents as
Hippie Park or Sunset Park, is at the west end of Sea Cliff Avenue where the street meets Prospect Avenue.Visitors can take in a scenic view of the sunset each night from the park’s benches. Clifton Park is home to Sea Cliff Baseball and North Shore Softball. The park also hosts the Sea Cliff Civic Association’s Sunset Serenade concert series featuring local artists each summer.
Revitalizing Francis M. Gaynor Park
Named for World War I veteran and brickmaker Francis M. Gaynor, the park was built in 1945 after the Post Brick Company closed. Gaynor advocated for the 22-acre property to be donated to Glenwood Landing American Legion Post 336. After being donated, it was developed into a recreational area and community center. The park’s athletic facilities have received upgrades, like new turf, within recent years.
Tappen Beach has something for everyone
Harry Tappen Beach, on the border of Glenwood Landing and Sea Cliff, is open to Town of Oyster Bay residents during the operating season from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend with certified lifeguards on duty. Each May, Sea Cliff’s St. Boniface Martyr Church holds its Feast by the Shore there, offering food, concessions, music and carnival games and rides. The on-site restaurant operates each season. Complete with a playground and basketball court, the park is a hub of activity. Tappen is also home to a Town of Oyster Bay public pool, staffed by certified lifeguards. Open during the same season, the pool welcomes Julia Capitelli/Herald families and lap swimmers.Visitors can often find Harry Tappen Beach hosts St. Boniface Martyr Church’s Feast by an ice cream truck outside the pool area. the Shore each May. 2026 - 2027
