Argentine president visits Darchei Torah President Javier Milei of Argentina visited Yeshiva Darchei Torah in Far Rockaway, New York, on Sept. 22, where he was presented with the Ohev Yisrael Award. Milei is said to have a deepseated respect for the Torah, and has stood out among world leaders as a rare champion of the Jewish people at a time of rising anti-semitism across the globe. The Argentine president was introduced by Rabbi Yaakov Bender, the educational leader of Yeshiva Darchei Torah, as “one of the chassidei umos haolam — one of the righteous of the nations of the world.” Eitan Magendzo, a lay leader in the Five Towns, briefly addressed the gathering in his native Spanish. Standing before a crowd of rabbis, yeshiva parents, students, and community leaders, Milei said that he would “take this recognition not as flattery, but as a commitment that I will not abandon until the last day of my life.” Milei also delivered his remarks in Spanish. An economist, he spoke extensively about capitalism as the ideal economic system, quoting multiple verses from the Torah to make his case. Wireless headsets at every seat allowed the assembled to follow the president’s speech with live translation into English. A f t e r h e c o n cl u d e d h i s remarks and music played over the loudspeakers, an ebullient Milei waded into the crowd, shaking hands, taking selfies, and greeting as many people as he could before making his way to his waiting motorcade. Yeshiva Darchei Torah, founded in 1972, is the largest boys’ yeshiva of its kind in the Northern Hemisphere, according to school officials. The school includes 2,700 students

Residents join Long Beach’s Beach Bombers By AIDAN WARSHAVSKY awarshavsky@liherald.com
Since 2021, Eric Krywe has been on a mission to expand baseball in Long Beach and surrounding communities, including among young players from the Five Towns. Through his Beach Bombers travel baseball prog ram and Beach Baseball youth camps, Krywe has helped young ballplayers take to the diamond, including Atlantic Beach resident Will Catania. Krywe (pronounced CRY-wee), who turned 47 t h i s we e k , l ive s a n d breathes baseball. As a youngster in Greigsville, in western New York, he played in Little League, middle school and high school, and earned a spot as a center fielder on Oswego State University’s team. gave him the chance to flesh out an idea. “Baseball has always been a passion of mine,” he said. “I always had the vision of creating a camp to try and bring [the] love back to Long Beach and put baseball on the map.” His baseball camp, open

to grades three through eight, began with about 30 children and has since exploded, hosting 110 participants across two weeks this summer. Meanwhile, the Bombers program, which was created during the first year of the camp, has grown from one team to seven, ranging in age groups from 9-and-under through 15-and-under— and the summer 15U team expands to 16U each fall. The Bombers squads practice twice a week and play single games, or doubleheaders on weekends, from the spring through the fall. They emphasize traits including responsibility, punctuality, sportsmanship and teamwork — which parents, such as Atlantic Beach resident Tom Catania want their sons to learn. Catania’s son, Will, 12, was enrolled in Long Beach Little League before discovering the Bombers travel team in the spring of last year. Will is competing in the upcoming fall season. T his past summer, Will’s team competed at Cooperstown in the Long Island Hot Stove League, which pits youth travel teams against each other. The team lost their first four games in pool play, before winning their last two games. In one game, Catania said, the Bombers beat an “elite” team, 12-1, and Will hit a solo home run. The Bombers fell to
South Florida-based Kings National Select in the first round. “It was a magical experience,” Catania said. “Many of the teams were all-star teams or from national organizations. We’re basically a town team, so it was a really big accomplishment for these kids.” In Island Park, Jacob Marlin’s two sons, Riis, 11, and Lennox, 10, were enrolled in the Island Park Little League before discovering Beach Baseball in 2023. Both are students in the Island Park School District, and, since the district doesn’t have a high school, they will attend Long Beach High School when they reach ninth grade — another reason Marlin enrolled his sons in the program. “One of the reasons why I wanted to kind of get them involved in youth sports and travel baseball is that kind of sense of responsibility and be accountable to your teammates and your coaches,” Marlin said. “It gives them ways to kind of challenge themselves, rather than just go out and waste time and find things to do.” As Krywe reflected on the baseball programs he’s built, he expressed his appreciation for the coaches for teaching the players how to “play the game the right way.” He recalled the iconic line from the 1989 h i t m ov i e “ F i e l d o f Dreams.” For more information, visit beachbaseballcamp.com/

The Village of Cedarhurst hosted their 10th annual Al Levy’s Car Show in Andrew J. Parise Park, on Aug. 30.
Classic cars on display in Andrew J. Parise Park Cedarhurst’s annual Car Show in the Park returned to Andrew J. Parise Park on Aug. 30, bringing more than 100 classic and collectible vehicles to the village for a day of automotive history and community fun. The 11th annual event featured a variety of automobiles, including vintage cars, muscle cars, hot rods, trucks and exotic vehicles. Admission was free, drawing residents, families and car enthusiasts to the park. The event has become a popular summer tradition, offering visitors an opportunity to admire unique and restored vehicles, speak with owners and reminisce about cars from years past. Trophies were also presented in multiple categories to recognize standout vehicles. Mayor Benjamin Weinstock said community events like the car show help keep residents connected and engaged. –Melissa Berman
Attendees had the opportunity to see rare and classic cars including a DeLorean DMC-12 as seen in the movie “Back to the Future.”
Classic Hot Rods such as the Ford T-bucket-style hot rod in red and a vintage Ford hot rod, likely based on a 1930s Ford coupe/pickup-style body in light blue.
Collectors from the Five Towns and surrounding areas proudly displayed their car for all to view including a Triumph TR6 in the shade Mimosa Yellow.
Other classic cars displayed included this 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air finished in red showcasing the motor.

Q. A few homes in my neighborhood are much taller. What are the rules for how tall a house can be — like how many floors, and what’s legal? I mostly see only two stories, but the new ones are at least three stories. Is this a new thing that you can build taller? Was it just traditional to only build two stories until now? A. Recently, influences have changed the thinking on allowed height. Hurricane Sandy’s flooding caused New York to promote house-lifting in flood zones. Influence also came from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which in essence is really a publicly funded insurance company, covering people in areas where regular home insurance onte eeper companies avoid the risk of insuring. The incentive to lift or build higher is to avoid huge flood insurance cost increases by building above flood levels, with the lowest level only allowed to be for a garage and storage, not living space. By making the first livable floor higher, above the flood level, insurance rates are kept lower. People have shown me that their rates went from $500 to $5,000 a year, increasing annually since Sandy in 2012. Some homes are much higher than codes and incentives intended due to misinterpretation of the reasons to build higher and misrepresentation in the review process. For example, a home’s first floor is no longer a first floor if it’s higher than 6 feet above the ground. Over 6 feet high, the floor level automatically becomes a second floor, meaning the next floor above is a third floor, which requires zoning board approval, interior sprinklers, escape terraces and wind strengthening. I’ve seen home plans misrepresented as being two stories by not correctly showing the floor level heights, or describing a second floor as a first floor and the next floor as a second floor (that’s really a third floor), and even where a fourth floor is shown as a mezzanine or roof-level balcony. There’s a small countryside town in Tuscany, in central Italy, called San Gimignano, that’s famous for its skyline of towers that people built on their homes in medieval times. As the story goes, one prominent homeowner built a tall tower to watch for potential attackers. His neighbor jealously built a tower a little higher, and, not to be outdone, several adjacent homeowners began building towers higher and higher than one another. History repeats itself. Thirty feet from the ground or center of the road is your maximum roof height. The safety code is intended to protect people from perishing in fires. The first code chapter addresses wind resistance, since the taller you build, the more turbulence from adjacent buildings and wind destruction, not just to your building, but to adjacent buildings. With the 75-mph winds we’ve had lately, wind, like flooding, is a real concern. Manhattan towers aren’t wood and nails for a reason. Decisions to build higher have to take community safety and appearance into account, and until recently, they did.
