This runs May 26-Sept. 15, and the season finale is on Sept. 20. This year, we are especially excited to usher in a new generation of lighted holiday decorations that will bring even more warmth and holiday spirit to our historic area. None of this would be possible without the dedication of our Board of Directors, volunteers, sponsors, town partners, and local businesses. Thank you for visiting, participating, and supporting local. Together, we help keep OB-EN vibrant, connected, and thriving. Sincerely, Amy Reilly Hanley Executive Director

How the Gold Coast has shined across the centuries By Will Sheeline

T

he communities that line Long Island's North Shore have been shaped by centuries of change, from Indigenous settlements and colonial villages to presidential homes and Gilded Age estates. Today, such places as Oyster Bay, Sea Cliff, Bayville, Locust Valley, Glen Head and Glenwood Landing continue to preserve the stories that defined the region.

The Matinecock and the first North Shore settlments Long before European settlers arrived, the North Shore was home to the Matinecock people, who established communities along the coastline and relied on the area's natural resources for survival. The local waters provided fish and shellfish, while forests supplied game and crops. One of the 13 tribes of the Algonquin people, the Matinecock tribe lived on the North Shore, in what is today Glen Cove, Cold Spring Harbor and Huntington. They and the other tribes contributed their names to many regions of Long Island, such as the Merricks, Rockaways and Montauketts.

Local organizations and institutions like Raynham Hall Museum in Oyster Bay promote the North Shore's history and heritage.

Herald file photo

Oyster Bay's colonial beginnings Dutch explorer David Pietersz. de Vries first recorded the name "Oyster Bay" in 1639, noting the area's abundant shellfish beds. English settlers from Cape Cod, including Peter Wright, Samuel Mayo and the Rev. William Leverich, established a permanent settlement in 1653 after purchasing land from the Matinecock. Because Oyster Bay sat on the disputed boundary between Dutch New Amsterdam and English New England, it developed into a unique blend of cultures and became an important agricultural and maritime community. The English formally chartered the Township of Oyster 10

Bay in 1667. The community quickly became a haven for religious liberty and toleranc, welcoming many Quakers who were fleeing religious persecution in other colonies as well as back in England. Early Quakers and "dissenters," or people who opposed state-mandated religions, included members of the Townsend family, one of the important families in the area along with the Youngs, Wrights and Underhills. Samuel Townsend would in 1740 purchase the property in Oyster Bay now known as Raynham Hall, which would house generations of the family. During the Revolution, Lt. Col. John Graves Simcoe, commander in the British Army, would occupy the Townsend family homestead for three winters. While there he wrote the first known Valentine's Day letter written in America to Sarah, or Sally, Townsend, a daughter of Samuel and sister of the famous spy Robert.

Baymen, fishermen and whalers For generations, life on the North Shore revolved around the water. Baymen harvested oysters, clams and fish from Oyster Bay Harbor and Long Island Sound, supplying markets throughout the region and even New York City itself. Whaling also became a major industry during the 18th and early 19th centuries. Residents of communities including Oyster Bay, Bayville, Locust Valley and Glenwood Landing participated in voyages that provided

whale oil used for lighting homes and businesses across the Northeast. Cold Spring Harbor was a particularly important, if relatively small, maritime port during the industry’s height in the early-mid 19th century. The maritime economy supported local shipbuilders, merchants and dock workers and helped establish many of the communities that remain along the shoreline today.

Revolution and the Culper Spy Ring The North Shore played an important role during the American Revolution. Oyster Bay remained under British occupation for much of the war, while local residents quietly supported the Patriot cause. Among the most important figures was Oyster Bay native Robert Townsend, who operated under the alias "Samuel Culper Jr." as part of the Culper Spy Ring organized by George Washington and Maj. Benjamin Tallmadge. Will Sheeline/Herald Working in occupied New York Joseph Saladino, Town of Oyster Bay supervisor, front, took a selfie with fellow electCity, Townsend gathered intelligence ed officials and representatives from the Oyster Bay-East Norwich Chamber of Commerce and Raynham Hall Museum to announce the start of the Long Island on British troop movements and History Hunt. military plans before passing the information through a network of couriers operating across Long Island Sound. Historians credit the spy ring with uncovering British counterfeiting operations and helping expose Benedict Arnold's plot to surrender West Point to the British. continued on page 12

Theodore Roosevelt's Oyster Bay More than a century later, Oyster Bay became associated with another major figure in American history. Theodore Roosevelt moved to Sagamore Hill in nearby Cove Neck in 1886 and lived there until his death in 1919. After becoming president in 1901, Roosevelt transformed the estate into the nation's unofficial "Summer White House." Foreign dignitaries, political leaders and journalists regularly traveled to Oyster Bay to meet with the president, making the Herald file photo small North Shore locale, a center of Theodore Roosevelt, the nation’s 26th president, turned his home Sagamore Hill into the “Summer White House” while in office by moving himself, and by extension international attention. the apparatus of government, to the North Shore of Long Island. While delivering the 4th of July speech in 1906 at what is now known as the Roosevelt-Derby Bandstand, the president would famously assert "The way to be good citizens of this Nation, you friends here, is to be good citizens of Oyster Bay... you can not be a good citizen of the Nation if you are not, in the first place, a good citizen among your own neighbors." Roosevelt's legacy remains visible throughout the community, from Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park to the preserved rooms of Sagamore Hill National Historic Site.

Known as the “Summer White House” during Roosevelt’s presidency, the estate served as his residence from 1885 until his death in 1919 and welcomed world leaders and dignitaries during his time in office. Today, the National Park Service maintains the 83-acre property, including the Roosevelt home, the Old Orchard Museum and grounds open to visitors throughout the year. Planting Fields Arboretum is adding a new garden designed by Piet Oudolf, right.

Gardens and architecture at Planting Fields Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park combines horticulture, history and architecture across more than 400 acres in Oyster Bay. Once the estate of William Robertson Coe and Mai Rogers Coe, the property today serves as one of Long Island's premier public gardens and cultural institutions. It was designed by the Olmsted Brothers, a landscaping firm run by the two sons of famed landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted. The brothers, John Charles and Frederick Law Jr., would become famous for their designs of college campuses like Harvard Business School as well as private projects for the wealthy businessmen of the Gilded Age. Today the arboretum is undergoing a renaissance of construction thanks to the efforts of staff and volunteers at the Planting Fields Foundation, which is responsible for 2026 - 2027

the site's maintenance and preservation. Having completed a rework of the entrance and driveway, the planting of dozens of new local tree species to replace old or sick ones, and the ongoing work at the Oudolf Garden, (being designed by the prolific and well-known landscape designer Piet Oudolf), the historic park and arboretum continues to attract thousands of visitors through the region. Highlights include: The Main Greenhouse, home to orchids, palms, ferns and seasonal exhibits. The Camellia House, known for its winter blooms. The historic Coe Hall mansion. Miles of walking paths through gardens and woodland areas. Planting Fields also hosts educational programming, concerts, festivals and seasonal events throughout the year, making it a destination for families, photographers and gardeners alike.
