Together, these moments capture the spirit of neighbors who value connection and volunteerism. Inside these pages you’ll find a curated look at signature happenings, parks, schools, libraries, community organizations, and dining destinations — the places and stories that give Oceanside and Island Park their distinct character. Even longtime residents may find something new, whether it’s a neighborhood event, a scenic destination or a dining spot that quickly becomes a favorite. Whether they’re organizing a fundraiser, delivering Thanksgiving dinners or planting flowers, these hometown organizations prove that small acts of kindness can make a big impact.

Tim Baker/Herald Oceanside Community Warriors and volunteers hosted their annual Community Cleanup Day at Det. Luis G. Alvarez Memorial Park in Oceanside.

Oceanside Community Warriors Need a park cleaned? A family helped after a fire? Supplies collected after a natural disaster? Chances are the Oceanside Community Warriors are already on it. Since forming in 2019, the volunteer organization has become one of Oceanside’s most recognizable forces for good, mobilizing residents whenever the community needs an extra set of hands. One weekend they might be planting flowers; another, they’re collecting everyday supplies. Their days welcome volunteers of every age — just bring a willingness to help. The group’s signature community cleanups bring together families, students and local organizations throughout the spring and fall to beautify parks, roadways and public spaces. Volunteers spend mornings planting flowers, collecting litter and improving neighborhoods before gathering, making the events as much about building friendships as improving the town. The Warriors are equally committed to supporting residents during difficult times. Their emergency donation drives have provided clothing, household items and financial assistance to families displaced by fires and other unexpected tragedies. Each August, members also work with the Oceanside S.A.F.E. Coalition to organize an Overdose Awareness planting, creating a colorful memorial garden that honors lost lives while promoting education, hope and recovery. Whether responding to an emergency or simply picking up a rake on a Saturday morning, the Warriors’ mission is simple: see a need, meet a need. 22

Oceanside Kiwanis Club For more than 80 years, the Oceanside Kiwanis Club has been making a difference — one child, one family and one community project at a time. Chartered in 1945, the club’s mission has always centered on improving the lives of local children, but its impact reaches nearly every corner of Oceanside. While many residents know the organization for its popular Super Bowl Pancake Breakfast, that’s only one chapter of its story. Throughout the year, Kiwanis members sponsor youth leadership clubs in every Oceanside elementary school, Holden Leeds/Herald the middle school and Oceanside Past presidents, from left, Michael D’Ambrosio, Robert Transom, Eric Abbey, Nancy Baxter, Tom Cesiro and Seth Blau celebrated the 80th anniversary of the Kiwanis Club. High School, where hundreds of students participate in service projects that teach leadership through volunteerism. The club also helps bring the community together through beloved events like the Summer Gazebo Readings, a Monday evening tradition that runs from June to August that has introduced residents to acclaimed poets and authors for nearly two decades while raising money to send local children to Kamp Kiwanis, a sleepaway camp for youngsters who might not otherwise have the opportunity to attend. From hosting Dr. Seuss & Friends Day at the Oceanside Library and community fishing trips to supporting hospital comfort-cart programs, holiday celebrations and scholarships, the Oceanside Kiwanis Club has become woven into the fabric of community life. Its members are not just volunteers — they’re mentors, organizers and neighbors dedicated to making Oceanside a better place for the next generation.

The Love, Ava Project

Courtesy Brianna O’Hagan Thirteen years after a small holiday gesture sparked a grass-roots movement, the Love, Ava Project, in conjunction with Oceanside Community Warriors, launched its biggest toy drive yet, mobilizing dozens of South Shore businesses and volunteers to bring Christmas to children and families facing hardship.

What started as one young girl’s wish to bring smiles to other children has grown into a movement that continues to spread kindness throughout Oceanside and beyond. The Love, Ava Project was created to honor the life and legacy of Ava Salonia, a local teenager whose courage continued on page 24

and compassion inspired everyone she met during her battle with leukemia. Even while undergoing treatment, Ava spent her time making friendship bracelets, designing gift bags for fellow patients and finding ways to brighten the days of other children in the hospital. After her death in 2023, Ava’s family and friends established the nonprofit to carry on her mission of bringing hope and comfort to children and families facing difficult times. Today, the organization hosts toy drives, community fundraisers and its annual Fall Fest, one of its signature events, where families gather for a day of games, entertainment and giving back. Since its founding, the nonprofit has collected more than 10,000 toys for children in need, ensuring that countless young patients and families experience moments of joy during challenging times. Whether filling a toy box, organizing a fundraiser or lending a helping hand, The Love, Ava Project continues to embody the kindness that Ava shared so freely. Every event serves as a reminder that even the smallest acts of compassion can have a lasting impact — and that one young girl’s legacy continues to inspire an entire community.

Oceanside Community Service Few organizations have woven themselves into the fabric of Oceanside quite like Oceanside Community Service. Since 1947, the nonprofit has quietly worked behind the scenes to ensure local families have food on the table, gifts under the tree and support whenever they need it most. Volunteers dedicate countless hours throughout the year sorting donations, stocking shelves and organizing community-wide collections that make an immediate difference for hundreds of residents. Its annual Turkey Shoot has become one of Oceanside’s most inspiring traditions. Each November, volunteers transform donations from local businesses, schools and residents into thousands of pounds of food distributed to families before Thanksgiving. As winter approaches, that same spirit of generosity continues with the organization’s holiday gift drive, where volunteers collect toys, clothing and presents to help brighten the season for children throughout the community. Subsequently, community members come together to wrap and package these donated items, ensuring the holidays remain magical for those in need. Beyond the holidays, Oceanside Community Service operates a year-round food pantry, 24

providing assistance to neighbors facing food insecurity. Generation after generation of volunteers has helped ensure that no family has to face difficult times alone, making the organization one of Oceanside’s enduring pillars of compassion.

Oceanside S.A.F.E Coalition Keeping a community safe takes more than law enforcement — it takes neighbors, educators, parents, students and local organizations working together. That’s the mission of the Oceanside S.A.F.E. Coalition, which has spent the past decade bringing the community together to prevent substance misuse through education, awareness and positive connections. Founded in 2015, the coalition works year-round to create a healthier, drug-free environment for Oceanside’s young people through partnerships with schools, businesses, healthcare providers and local government. One of the coalition’s most meaningful traditions is its annual Overdose Awareness Day, held each August at Schoolhouse Green, which honors lives lost to addiction while celebrating hope, recovery and the strength of families who have been impacted. Community members gather for music, guest speakers, memorial activities and a candlelight ceremony that has become one of Oceanside’s most moving annual events. Throughout the year, the coalition also leads DEA Drug Take Back Days, giving residents a safe place to dispose of unused mediations, and organizes Project Sticker Shock, in which youth volunteers place prevention stickers on takeout bags at local restaurants ahead of prom and graduation season to remind adults not to provide alcohol to minors. Student leaders also spearhead peer-to-peer prevention programs, educational campaigns and community service projects that empower young people to make healthy choices while helping their classmates do the same. From parent workshops to recognizing community partners at its annual kickoff dinner, the Oceanside S.A.F.E. Coalition has become a cornerstone of the community. By bringing people together around a common goal, the organization continues to show that prevention starts with conversation and that a safer Oceanside begins with neighbors looking out for one another.

Kiwanettes of Oceanside For the Kiwanettes of Oceanside, giving back has always been in style. Founded in 1955 as a women-led counterpart to the Oceanside Kiwanis Club — at a time when women were not permitted to join the civic organization — the Kiwanettes have grown into one of Oceanside’s longest-standing service groups, committed to improving the lives of neighbors through compassion and volunteerism. Their signature event each year is the annual Kiwanettes Gala, the organization’s largest fundraiser and celebration of community service. Proceeds from the event support a wide range of local initiatives, Billy Harrison/Herald The Kiwanettes of Oceanside marked more than seven decades of including scholarships for Oceanside High community serving during their annual fundraising gala, honoring two School seniors, the beloved annual Senior local women. Filled with books, puzzles, snacks and other thoughtful items, the comfort cards are designed to bring a smile to patients during their hospital stay. The Kiwanettes’ generosity extends far beyond a single event. Throughout the year, members support local food pantries, veterans’ organizations and family assistance programs, while organizing Thanksgiving meals and holiday gifts for families facing financial hardship. The Kiwanettes continue a tradition of service that has defined the organization for generations, whether they are honoring community leaders or serving lunch to local seniors. Their work reflects a simple philosophy that has guided the group since for more than 70 years: when neighbors care for one another, the entire community grows stronger.

Island Park Kiwanis Club For more than 70 years, the Island Park Kiwanis Club has shown that some of the community’s best memories are made around a dinner table. Summer belongs to the club’s annual Lobster and Steak Dinner, one of Island Park’s most anticipated fundraisers. People gather for an evening overlooking the waterfront, enjoying great food while supporting programs that benefit local children and families. During the holidays, Kiwanis members collect food, gifts and essential items for those in need, ensuring local families can celebrate the season with dignity and joy. New this year was the inaugural Everyday Hero Celebration, honoring two community members whose years of service quietly shaped life in the village. The awards recognize people who serve their communities consistently without expectation of recognition. The Everyday Hero program also supports the New York District’s Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center initiative, which provides funding and resources for specialized pediatric trauma care and injury-prevention programs at hospitals including Cohen Children’s Medical Center and Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. Island Park Kiwanis members have built a tradition centered on fellowship and generosity, whether they’re hosting line dancing nights or scholarship fundraisers. Their events remind residents that giving back can be as simple as sharing a meal with friends.

One of the organization’s most inspiring traditions is its home dedication ceremonies. Community members, volunteers, donors and local officials gather to welcome a deserving family into their new home, often lining the streets with American flags as the keys are presented. But Building Homes for Heroes doesn’t stop once the front door opens. The organization also provides financial planning, wellness programs and other support services to help veterans and their families build successful futures. John Esposito Commodore Scholarship Foundation John Esposito spent his life giving back to Island Park, and years after his passing, his generosity continues to open doors for local students. Created through Esposito’s estate by Esposito’s cousin, Lincoln Orens Middle School teacher and Island Park Kiwanis President Karen Davis, the Commodore Scholarship Foundation awards four $25,000 scholarships each year to graduating Island Park seniors who attend Long Beach High School or a private school. Unlike many scholarship programs that focus solely on academic achievement, the foundation recognizes students who demonstrate integrity, perseverance, compassion and a commitment to serving others. The annual scholarship ceremony has become one of the most meaningful celebrations of graduation season. Families, educators and community leaders gather to recognize young men and women whose character reflects the values Esposito lived by throughout his life. For many recipients, the awards help make college more attainable while serving as a reminder that kindness and hard work are qualities worth celebrating. Class is in Session A look into Oceanside’s schools

By Abigail Grieco

T

he Oceanside School District serves more than 5,500 students from prekindergarten through 12th grade across one early childhood center, five elementary schools, one middle school and two high schools. The district is known for its strong academics, awardwinning arts and music programs, competitive athletics, and wide range of opportunities in science, technology and career education. Here's a look at each school and what makes it unique.

1. Elementary Schools Oceanside's six elementary schools educate students in grades 1 through 6. While each school has its own identity, they share the district's commitment to academic excellence and wholechild development.

Libraries come to life:

Where every visit brings a new adventure By Abigail Grieco

G

one are the days when libraries were simply quiet places to check out a good book. In Oceanside and Island Park, they’re where superheroes roam the aisles, aspiring chefs learn new recipes, volunteers find their next cause and neighbors gather to celebrate everything from local history to patriotic traditions. Whether you’re watching a live performance, exploring hands-on STEM activities, meeting barnyard animals or discovering your next favorite hobby, these libraries have become vibrant cultural hubs that offer something new for all ages.

Courtesy Oceanside Library Head Teen Librarian Caitlin Waldron, center, coordinated a P.S. I Love You Day event at Oceanside Library with local coffee shop Brew Crew; a national initiative dedicated to standing up against bullying, supporting mental health and helping prevent suicide. Young volunteers designed coffee sleeves with uplifting messages to mark the occasion.

Oceanside Library: A destination for discovery Since reopening after its $33.5 million renovation in 2024, the Oceanside Library has become one of the South Shore’s premier gathering places. The state-of-the-art facility features a 165-seat theater, Discovery STEM Lab, teaching kitchen and the Whisk & Brush Studio, where visitors can explore everything from painting and cooking to podcasting. Some of the library’s biggest crowds come for its annual signature events. OceanCon transforms the building into a pop culture playground, complete with superheroes, cosplay, gaming tournaments, comic artists and hands-on activities that draw more than 1,000 visitors each fall. Every March, families celebrate Dr. Seuss & Friends Day with a whimsical day of stories, crafts, games and beloved characters inspired by the legendary children’s author, encouraging young readers to discover the joy of books. Residents also flock to the library’s annual Volunteer Fair, where dozens of local nonprofit organizations — from The Book Fairies to the National Alliance on Mental Health (NAMI) — connect with community members looking to give back, highlighting the library’s role as a hub for civic engagement. From author talks and concerts to technology classes and children’s scavenger hunts, the library continues to prove that learning doesn’t stop when school lets out. 42 Oceanside and Island Park Community Guide www.liherald.com

Courtesy Island Park Public Library The Island Park Public Library brought together history, patriotism and community spirit during this year’s annual Library Day celebration, aptly themed around the nation’s 250th anniversary.

Island Park Library: Small-town charm meets big-time fun Don’t let its size fool you — the Island Park Library packs an entire year’s worth of fun into one welcoming building. From outdoor concerts and classic cars to history lessons and holiday celebrations, the library has built its reputation on bringing neighbors together through unique events that celebrate the spirit of the village. Each fall, automobile enthusiasts line the library grounds for the popular Car Show, where vintage classics, custom builds and modern favorites draw visitors of all ages. During the summer, the parking lot transforms into an outdoor entertainment venue with live concerts and family movie nights under the stars, giving residents another reason to gather with friends and neighbors. Here also the village’s rich history is celebrated through special presentations and community events. This year, as Island Park marked its 100th anniversary, residents packed the library to hear Mayor Michael McGinty share stories and photographs chronicling the village’s first century. Patriotic traditions remain a cornerstone of the calendar as well. The annual Flag Day Ceremony, held in partnership with local veterans’ organizations and scouts, honors those who served while teaching younger generations about civic pride and the meaning of the American flag. Whether it’s a storytime for toddlers, a family festival or a community celebration, the Oceanside and Island Park libraries continue to show that today’s libraries are more than places to read — they are places where communities come together, lifelong memories are made and every day brings a new adventure. 2026 - 2027 43 Oceanside and Island Park Community Guide

Your Safety is Our #1 Concern—And the Experts Agree At Mount Sinai South Nassau, patient safety isn’t just a priority—it’s a standard, one we work on every day. And the experts agree. We’ve earned national recognition for patient safety, including an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group and the Healthgrades Patient Safety Excellence Award. That means better outcomes for our patients with lower risk of infections or hospital acquired conditions. When it comes to your health, nothing matters more than knowing you’re in a place where patient safety matters most.
