LIRR and MTA strike a deal to end three-day stoppage By AIDAN WARSHAVSKY & BRIAN KACHARABA of the Herald

The three-day Long Island Rail Road strike ended late Monday after five unions and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority reached a tentative agreement following several days of negotiations, officials announced at an evening news conference. Union and MTA representatives announced the deal after negotiations resumed in the afternoon and continued into the night, ending the work stoppage that had halted service and caused widespread travel disruptions across Long Island and in New York City. “We have good news tonight,” Kevin Sex-

ton, vice president of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen and the spokesman for the Long Island Railroad Bargaining Coalition, said. “We’re pleased to announce that the parties have reached an agreement.” In the Five Towns, residents’ commutes to work and personal commitments were impacted. “I [had] been coming home every weekend, so it definitely would have affected my ability to come home,” Gavin Glassman said on Friday. Glassman, a Hewlett resident and a fulltime student at New York University, said that if school were still in session, he would ContInued on page 9

Both the Hewlett-Woodmere and Lawrence school districts’ 2026-27 school year budgets passed in the annual vote on Tuesday. The Hewlett-Woodmere Public School District’s proposed budget of $149.9 million passed by a count of 1,200 to 799. It is 4.8 percent larger than the current spending plan, which totals $143.08 million. This estimated tax levy increse is 2.61 percent. As well, 1,270 out of 1,983 voters approved Proposition 2, the Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library’s spending plan, totaling $6.58 million. Board of Eudcation incumbent Trustees Shari Amitrano and Cheryl May were re-elected for another three-year term. May received 1,299 votes, and Amitrano garnered 1270. “We are so happy that the community came out to support us and the budget,” Amitrano and May said in a joint statement. “We are looking forward to helping our community

evolve, including our curriculum instruction and our updated athletic facilities.” In the Lawrence School District, the proposed $106.23 million budget passed with 1,496 votes. The spending plan is 1.64 percent larger tha the current budget. Despite the increase, district officials announced that the tax levy increase will remain unchanged, with no increase, for the 12th consecutive year, a point administrators highlighted as a continued effort to limit the financial burden on taxpayers. The budget includes funding for core academic programs, special education and mental health services, as well as technology upgrades. Incumbent school board Trustees Murray Forman and Asher Mansdorf were both reelected to serve another term, with Mansdorf receiving 1,776 and Forman collecting 1,524. The $3.6 million budget for the Peninsula Public Library was approved with 1,501 votes. The new library trustee is Sara Isaacson, who received 867 votes.
