Emmy-nominated performer David Hagerman came to Old Mill Road Elementary School for a magical assembly to close out the school year on June 20.

Magic in the classroom brings Old Mill Road’s year to a close By JoSEPH D’AlESSANDRo jdalessandro@liherald.com

Throughout history, wizards, magicians, and alchemists have been experts in mixing mystical presentation with real science. On June 20, one of the country’s most famous “Science Wizards” performed at Old Mill Road Elementary School in Merrick. David Hagerman became one of the country’s most famous magic-users thanks to his 2021 appearance on America’s Got Talent. His prolific work earned him an Emmy nomination, shows and even a performance for NASA. His flashy performances also have a unique twist: a focus on science education. “I’ve been doing school assemblies full time for 31 years,” he said. “My role in edu-

cation is more to inspire the students so they want to be taught, so they want to go and learn the science on their own.” Hagerman, of Missouri, first set foot on Long Island for educational shows 10 years ago. His show in Merrick is the latest in a tour of schools in every state in the continental United States. Hagerman engages the audience with tricks such as vortex cannons that launch fog rings into the crowd, conducting electricity through the human body to turn on lightbulbs, and more. Afterwards, he shares how air physics made the rings possible, or why electricity is sometimes safe to handle and other times dangerous to touch.
