Massapequa BOE honors Spring 2026 championship teams By MIKE POLANSKY Senior Correspondent

The Massapequa Board of Education opened its June 25 meeting with a ceremony recognizing five championship athletic teams from the spring 2026 season. The Massapequa High School boys varsity baseball team and boys varsity lacrosse team each captured New York State titles. The girls varsity softball team won the Long Island championship, while the girls varsity lacrosse and girls track and field teams earned Nassau County championships. getting sick of hearing about Massapequa winning, but we never do.” Superintendent of Schools William Brennan echoed those remarks, noting that among more than 700 school districts in New York State, few can match Massapequa’s sustained athletic success. “There are school districts across the state that won’t have the number of county championship teams in their entire history as what Massapequa has accomplished in 2025-26,” Brennan said. “And we have the most dedicated, passionate and talented coaches that I’ve ever seen in my 26 years of public education.” -The boys varsity baseball team was recognized following its 2025 Long Island championship with a 2026 New York State

title. Head coach Tom Sheedy, who has been part of the program since 1995 and served as varsity head coach for more than 20 years, credited the program’s consistency. Four players — Jack Scannapieco, Chris Sultana, James Alonso and Anthony DiNello — have been nominated for allstate honors. Sheedy is retiring as a teacher this year but will continue coaching baseball. -The girls varsity lacrosse team was next, earning its second consecutive Nassau County championship. Head coach Megan Protano said the team “truly became a family” and made each day at the field meaningful. Protano also recognized CONTINUED ON PAGE 3
