Lakeview community leaders promote literacy, learning By MADISoN GUSlER mgusler@liherald.com

The Lakeview community displayed unwavering support for childhood education on Saturday, showcasing two programs to highlight the importance of learning. To kick off the day, the Lakeview branch of the NAACP partnered with the Lakeview Public Library to host the 5th Annual Back To School Giveaway. “Because we live in a middle class area, we think that the need is not there,” Sheila Duke, first vice president of the Lakeview NAACP, said. Doris Hicks-Newkirk, branch president Glen Cove

and a former educator, launched the event five years ago to highlight the importance of education for children in the community. The giveaway allows the NAACP to not only advocate for local education, but also to support it. “Our first year, when we had so many different families coming, we were like, ‘This is something that we have to do annually,’” Duke said. “So five years later, to see this bigger, growing, touching more families, just giving them a great start to the beginning of an academic year, is amazing.” Sponsors and volunteers gathered in the library’s parking lot, connecting with comContinued on page 20
