Annual traditions that define our community By Alyssa R. Griffin
F
rom long-running festivals and outdoor concerts to holiday celebrations and hometown traditions, Malverne, West Hempstead and Lakeview are home to events that bring neighbors together throughout the year. Whether you're a lifelong resident or new to the area, these annual celebrations showcase the spirit, history and community pride that make these neighborhoods special.
Celebrate Groundhog Day with Malverne Mel Every February, residents gather to see whether Malverne Mel predicts an early spring or six more weeks of winter. Since 1996, the village's famous groundhog has become a beloved tradition, with the annual celebration featuring hot chocolate, refreshments and fundraising to support Mel's home through the STAR Foundation. Student artwork depicting Malverne Mel, created by Madison Gusler/Herald children from Our Lady of Lourdes Malverne Mayor Tim Sullivan listened closely as Malverne Mel shared his annual School, Grace Lutheran School, James prognostication. A. Dever Elementary School, Davison Avenue Intermediate School and Maurice W. Downing Primary School, is displayed inside the Long Island Rail Road station before Mel makes his annual prediction.
Explore local creativity during the Art Walk Each summer, the Malverne Chamber of Commerce transforms the village into a walkable art gallery during its annual Art Walk. Local artists display paintings, photography, sculptures, and other works inside participating businesses throughout downtown, encouraging visitors to explore local shops while enjoying the artwork. The event has continued to grow, with live music, family activities and award-winning creations — making it one of the village's signature summer traditions. 12

Test your baking skills at the Irish Soda Bread Throw Down Each March, friendly competition takes center stage at Phoenix Family Chiropractic during the annual Community Irish Soda Bread Throw Down. Inspired by the Food Network's "Throwdown with Bobby Flay," the event has become a beloved Malverne tradition, inviting home bakers to compete for the title of best Irish soda bread while celebrating the village's Irish heritage. After the judging concludes, residents are welcome to sample the entries, enjoy traditional Irish music, and celebrate together with refreshments, making the Throw Down as much a community gathering as it is a baking competition.
Stu Goldman/Herald Phoenix Family Chiropractic owner Evelyn Heredia, second left, hosted the competition, assisted by judges Gerry Hughes, owner of Connelly Station, left, wiith Mayor Tim Sullivan, and Town of Hempstead Clerk Kate Murray.

amilies in Malverne, Lakeview and West Hempstead are served by two thriving school districts that are committed to academic excellence, student achievement and preparing young people for success beyond graduation. Whether you're part of Malverne's Mule Nation or West Hempstead's RamPride, students are surrounded by dedicated teachers, supportive administrators and engaged families who encourage them to grow academically, creatively and personally. Both districts continue to expand opportunities for students through innovative programming that prepares them for an ever-changing world. This year, schools have placed an increased emphasis on STEAM education, artificial intelligence tools and business education while also encouraging civic engagement through the addition of student representatives on their local boards of education. From championship athletic teams and award-winning performing arts programs to clubs, internships and leadership opportunities, students have countless ways to discover their passions and prepare for college, careers and life. Here's a closer look at each district and the many opportunities available to help every student shine.

hether you're looking for a quiet place to read, escape the heat or rain, use a computer, attend a class or discover your next favorite book, the Malverne, West Hempstead and Lakeview public libraries offer welcoming spaces and resources for every age. Beyond books, each library serves as a community hub with educational programs, cultural events and unique collections designed to enrich the lives of residents.
Dozens on families came out to the Lakeview Public Library for the sixth annual Back-to-School Giveaway in Juky.

Lakeview Public Library Founded through years of community advocacy, the Lakeview Public Library has served residents since opening its current Woodfield Road location in 2002. Before the library district was established, Lakeview was the only surrounding community without public library service. Determined residents worked for years to create a library of their own, eventually opening a volunteer library in 1968 before securing the permanent facility that serves the community today. Today, the library offers books, public computers and dedicated spaces for adults, children and teens. Throughout the year, it hosts popular community events, including the annual Diana Walker Rock the Block Summer Kick-Off Party and the Labor Day BBQ with Chef Sean. Patrons of all ages can enjoy a variety of programs, including the weekly "The Knittin Gang …we crochet 2!" group, bid whist games, Lego Club, computer classes, arts and crafts, and more. Teens have their own space to gather and explore their creativity through rotating programs such as open mic nights, music showdowns and poetry slams.Volunteer opportunities also allow teens to assist with library programs and other activities. The Library of Things lets patrons borrow more than books, including a ukulele, stud finder and special-event lawn signs. Cardholders can also reserve passes to attractions including the Long Island Children's Museum and Old Westbury Gardens, among other destinations.

In many ways, putting out a newspaper each week is an interactive process. We need your participation to do our job, so we offer you, our readers, a reminder of how and when to reach us. For news of upcoming events sponsored by civic, service, religious or community organizations, the deadline is 10 a.m. the Friday before publication. We also welcome news of your family life, your business life and your social life. We accept obituaries and Neighbors in the News items, including awards, honors, births, graduations, marriages and promotions. These items are printed at no charge to you. We value your opinions, and provide a forum for them in our popular Letters to the Editor space. Letters are accepted until 5 p.m. the Friday before publication, and should be no more than 350 words. The Herald also offers tours of its Garden City headquarters and printing plant for schools, scouts and other community groups. To schedule a tour, contact Michael Romero at (516) 569-4000, Ext. 235, or email mromero@liherald.com. Alyssa R. Griffin • Reporter
