The members of the city’s new Planning Board were sworn in at the Feb. 18 City Council meeting.

The Long Beach City Council appointed seven members to its newly established Planning Board at its Feb. 18 meeting — a long-anticipated step to enhance the city’s development and land use oversight. Barry Alton, Jason Clancy and Brian Patton will each serve a three-year term on the board; Kelly Spada and Kevin Martinsen, a two-year term; and Joseph Lucas and Andrea Gauto, a one-year term. “It’s going to protect Long Beach from people that would do it harm,” City Council President Brendan Finn said of the new board. “And it’s going to make Long Beach into, I think, not a better place, but certainly we’ll have a more cohesive plan for going forward.” The council received numerous applications for the volunteer positions but selected seven people based on experience and community representation. Federal legislation, including the Elementary and Secondary Education Act and IDEA, has long protected historically underserved students and those with disabilities, according to the state department’s website.
