Our annual Living In Long Beach guide is a testament to the city’s post-pandemic resurgence. This summer will see some of the Long Beach staples, such as the Michell O’Neill Volleyball Tournament, as well as fireworks, movies and concerts on the beach to just name a few. Returning this season after a short hiatus is yet another favorite: the arts and crafts fairs.

Throughout Long Beach adjoining communities of East Atlantic Beach, Lido Beach and Point Lookout people are readying homes and businesses for this eagerly anticipated time of year, with the crowds of beachgoers not far behind.

Memorial Day marks the official start of the beach season, and the unofficial start of summer. We look forward to the respite of long relaxing summer days as we return to our beloved ocean and beach.

Throughout its 100 years, Long Beach has reinvented and transformed itself to thrive as the jewel of the South Shore and it continues to grow. New condos and apartments are attracting more residents to the oceanfront. The city continues to welcome new restaurants and stylish stores.

Perhaps most exciting of all, at long last, the Superblock development is well underway. Work is finally progressing on this $369 million mixed-use project, which will include condominiums, rental apartments, boardwalk-level retail, dining, and a two-level parking garage with 1,100 spaces. By year’s end, the first rental building complete with just under 240 available units will open, marking another major milestone for the city.

Chamber continues to grow!

The Long Beach Chamber of Commerce wishes you a beautiful Spring and a great 2023 Beach Season. We are so proud of our Long Beach community and its ongoing effort to transform and grow, and we’re proud to be a part of it. The Chamber is helping to inform local businesses about government and private financial grants to bolster commerce and improve infrastructure, as well as continue financial aid for Covid-19 recovery. At our monthly general membership meetings and through our online media, the Chamber keeps residents and businesses informed and up to date on a variety of matters touching us all, such as: the offshore Empire Wind project, the Superblock development project, beautification plans, property taxes and the City’s budget. The Chamber is a vigilant promotor and advocate for our local businesses, helping to ensure their voices get heard by the City’s administration and beyond. Last year the Chamber spent over $10,000 on TV, print and digital media advertising on behalf of local businesses.

We also bring the community together in an ever-growing series of fun and exciting events that we host and/or sponsor with local organizations and businesses, such as the annual Electric Light Parade, the recent Casino Night and the upcoming outdoor Vendor Fairs. These events and more, along with the many non-Chamber events held in Long Beach, such as the Arts in the Plaza and Farmers’ Market weekly fairs at Kennedy Plaza and the free movies and concerts on the beach during the summer, to name

Our summer celebration begins on Saturday, May 27th as our beaches open for weekends. (Beaches will be open every day beginning on June 26th)  Also taking place on opening weekend: The City Manager’s Annual 10 Mile Race to Remember on Sunday, May 28th and The City of Long Beach Memorial Day Parade on Monday May 29th.

On Friday July 7th, (rain date July 8th) we will illuminate the skies over Long Beach with our July Fireworks Extravaganza.

And… no summer celebration would be complete without our concerts by the sea. The City’s Annual Summer Concert Series is a Long

Beach favorite. Our first concert takes the stage on July 7th.

Also taking center stage all summer long: our City’s restaurants, full of local flavor; our one of a kind shops; and beloved Long Beach traditions including a number of exciting running races, surfing, volleyball, fishing, boating and so much more.

Robert Blau more than a

Robert Blau was 53 when retired from his fulltime job at Take-Two Interactive. That was 15 years ago, and while the thoughts of relaxation sounded appealing, he knew something was missing.

“I remember shortly after I retired, the earthquake in Haiti happened,” Blau recalled. “I was in that frame of mind where I needed to do something other than sit around. So, I went to Haiti for two weeks.”

Blau joined the Global Volunteer Network in Haiti, and after returning, it became clear to Blau he wanted to do something greater with all the free time he now had: He wanted to help others.

But how? The answer, Blau would ultimately find out, was right in front of him, in the pages of the Long Beach Herald.

It was 2011 when Blau and his wife saw the newspaper ad for the first time: the Long Beach Soup Kitchen — for many, the only hope of getting a hot meal most days — was looking for volunteer cooks. Blau loved cooking, and he loved volunteering. So he reached out.

And thus began a journey that leads Blau to today, where he not only still volunteers for the Long Beach Soup Kitchen, he’s also running it.

Once again, however, disaster struck. This time a lot closer to home.

Hurricane Sandy made landfall on Long Island in 2012, wiping out homes and buildings across the city.

Among them was the building where the soup kitchen was home.

The kitchen’s president stepped down, and Blau stepped up, with the goal of restoring the muchneeded resource. The Long Beach Lions Club — which Blau is now a member of — donated $50,000 to rebuild the facility and supply it with new equipment.

The kitchen was up and running again by March 2013. But now it had new kitchenware and appliances, a walk-in freezer, and a plate change from polystyrene foam to recyclable paper.

“We wanted to be as planet conscious as possible while helping out the community,” Blau said.

The soup kitchen is open every day. The pantry, which allows people to come up to a window and

shop for groceries, is available Mondays and Thursdays. Some people begin lining up just before 8 a.m., to get what they need — even though the pantry doesn’t open until 11:15.

“Every day, we consistently give out anywhere between 40 and 70 meals,” Blau said. “We don’t discriminate against anyone who wants to come and get lunch. You could be a millionaire and get a meal. There’s no signing up. There (are) no names. No talk of income or the size of your family. We will serve you lunch.”

everything everywhere was closed, Blau and the soup kitchen remained open. Meals were in an even higher demand, and cars would pull up asking for not just one meal, but sometimes five or six for their whole family.

And they got them.

All of the food supplied to Blau and the soup kitchen is donated from Trader Joe’s, which delivers soup, vegetables, fruits, meats, bread and canned goods each week. They also get

support from neighbors and local groups, who donate money to help fund the kitchen.

Blau sees the help they offer on the faces of those lining up each day. He and his roughly 45 volunteers have no plans to stop anytime soon. “Some people come for meals. Some come for groceries. Some come for both,” Blau said. “Whatever it is someone wants, we will help. I’m more than just a ‘soup-ervisor.’”

HIttIng tHe BeACH

The beaches will be open for Long Beach residents each summer starting Memorial Day weekend. The beach park will be open as normal for residents and non-residents. People are advised to take precautions when needed.

Beach passes can usually be purchased at the gazebo near the children’s park and ice arena on the recreation campus at Magnolia Boulevard. The gazebo is expected be open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and weekends from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Special operating hours for senior citizens 62 and older will be available Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 to 9 a.m.

Passes will also be sold at the beach trailer at the southwest corner of Laurelton Boulevard and West Broadway. The office opens weekdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and weekends from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The beach will begin daily operation from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on June 24. Until then it will operate on weekends only from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Passes can also be purchased digitally and be used on mobile devices to enter the beach. The passes can be purchased, for the same price, on the city's website. They can then be accessed and managed by downloading the Yodel app on smartphones and mobile devices.

Who is required to have a beach pass?

All those who have reached age 13 must have a beach pass to enter or remain on the beach on weekends from Saturday, May 29 (including Memorial Day) through the end of June, and daily until after Labor Day. The beach will temporarily be open to residents only, unless updated by the city officials.

Is there a family discount?

Yes. Family resident passes include two adult passes and for those children living in the household between 13 and 17. Children 12 and younger are free, and anyone 18 or older is

considered an adult. Proof of birth date must be presented at time of purchase.

Children born after Sept. 6, 2009, will not need a beach pass in the summer of 2023; and those born before May 29, 2004, will need to purchase an adult pass.

What do I need to provide?

Residency: Those wishing to purchase season/ daily passes at the resident rate must have an address in the City of Long Beach. The following terms of proof are acceptable: driver license with Long Beach address, check or bill or lease with Long Beach address and picture ID.

Child: A child pass will be issued when proof of age is presented via birth certificate or passport, or some other acceptable form of identification.

Senior Citizen: Driver license or passport indicating birth date on or before May 29, 1961

Access Pass: Documentation indicating physical disability.

Military Rate: U.S. government ID indicating holder is a member or has been honorably discharged from a branch of the U.S. armed services. Only one pass sold per military ID.

Long Beach is synonymous with surfing. People running into the water, jumping on their surfboards and riding the waves in the sun is a typical city summer.

One groups mission has been to ensure this activity is for everyone — especially those who never thought they could.

Surf For All, one of Long Beach’s most popular programs for developmentally challenged teenagers, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to assisting individuals and exposing them to the ocean. They believe the ocean is a source of healing and spiritual strength that should be accessible to all.

Cliff Skudin, who co-founded the group with his brother Will in 2002, says Surf For All has been beneficial for all who take part.

“It benefits the children in many ways,” he said about the program. “Surfing therapy really builds self-esteem and allows for a sense of accomplishment.”

When it first started, Surf For All was primarily focused on developmentally disabled teenagers only. Since then, it's expanded to cover a broader spectrum of disabilities — autism, cerebral palsy, visual impairment and much more. Aside from their own planned outings, they work with the Long Beach school district and provide free weekly lessons for students during special education program that takes place during the summer months.

Surfing isn’t all they do, though. Teens have had numerous opportunities to take trips and even play with horses. They have partnered

with HorseAbility, an Old Westbury-based organization that offers therapeutic sessions with horses, to bring them to the sand. On such occasions, the participants can alternate between surfing and having the chance to play with two miniature horses.

Surf for All has been recognized a number of times for their impact in the community, including even once by the New York Islanders. John Ledecky, the hockey team's owner, honored them for the team’s Community Spotlight during a home game last year. Along with the organization being highlighted on social media, they ran the 50/50 raffle table for more than half the game. Tons of fans came

over to learn more about the group and to buy raffle tickets. Over $20,000 was raised from the raffle, with half going to Surf for All and half going to the Islanders Children’s Foundation.

“It was a way to combine the two most important things in my life,” Dylan Hronec, a huge Islander fan and longtime Surf for All member, said when he was able to go to the game.

“Having both that platform and the team bring attention to me and Surf for All is huge.”

The organization allows children with disabilities and special needs to take part in an activity that can be both fun and therapeutic at the same time.

Swing and Slide at local parkS

You might say Long Beach is one big park. After all,  its beautiful beach is referred to as the “Ocean Beach Park.”

But Long Beach also  has numerous children’s playgrounds that dot the entire city. During the summer, parks are run with recreation staff members, who supply cold water, sidewalk chalk, jump ropes and more. They are also there to make sure that all of the equipment is in working order.

The parks and recreation department once again provides Family Fun in the Park this summer in rotating parks throughout the season. The program features family-friendly activities, shows, games and more. Visit LongBeachNY.gov/rec for more information.

Long Beach marked the grand opening of its new skate park in 2015 with its first Bowl-a-Rama Skate Jam Contest, presented by Skudin Surf.

The skate park was designed by Californiabased firm Spohn Ranch, which used input

gathered form Long Beach residents and skaters at a pair of meetings to construct a park tailored to the wishes of local skaters. The structure was designed to accommodate skaters of all ages and skill levels.

The park is on the bay side of National Boulevard, closer to the recreation center than the previous one on Magnolia Boulevard. It is open daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The park includes an amoeba bowl, a combination horseshoe bowl and mini-ramp, a speed hump, and numerous handrails and stairs. Its 15,000-square-foot L-shape more than doubled the size of the old park.

The Michelle O'Neill Foundation Inc. a not-for-profit organization that benefits children with cancer and special needs by making distributions directly to their families. It's intended to help ease the financial burdens of caring for a child with a catastrophic disease. And it lets them know that people care, as well as supporting organizations that serve them.

Young Ecuadorian immigrant focuses on

hen Andrea Gauto arrived in America from Ecuador 15 years ago, he had a prime goal in mind: Help children who are poor and in need of emotional support.

Now 35, Gauto is close to achieving her goal. Last July, she was named acting executive director of the Martin Luther King Jr. Center in North Park. And she is about a year away from receiving a degree in psychology from the University of Phoenix.

Once she graduates, Gauto wants to open her own family counseling practice.

But for now, it’s all about the MLK Center — a role Gauto learned about after meeting Cedrick Coad, when both were teaching associates at Lido Elementary School. Coad — whose family had been early organizers of the center, and who has spent much of his life working at the facility — is now its board chair.

The center needed help, Coad told Gauto. So, she signed on.

Gauto’s responsibilities include organizing events — like a technology day that took place this past April, as well as a host of other administrative duties one might expect from an executive director.

When she first arrived in Long Beach, Gauto thought of becoming an organizational

psychologist working in human resources. But she changed her mind after spending some time in Long Beach’s largely Black and lowincome North Park. Drug addiction has been a problem on Long Island’s South Shore.

“I see in the low-income areas that the need is not only financial, but also emotional,” Gauto said. Where poverty is wide-spread, children often do not receive the emotional support they need.

“The children don’t have the parenting they need,” Gauto said.

The MLK Center, Gauto said, provides a variety of services for children, including tutoring, sports and special events like holiday parties and festivities.

A major concern, she said, is drug addiction — not just in North Park, but across Nassau County’s South Shore. There have been numerous overdoses and even deaths attributed to drug abuse.

And that has her attention.

“I want to keep the focus right now on drug addiction,” she said.

Temple Emanu-El of Long Beach stands out among religious institutions on the barrier island for the Interfaith Shabbats it sponsors periodically, bringing together people of different faiths, ethnicities and races.

The spiritual leader behind those Shabbats is Rabbi Jack Zanerhaft, who has been Temple Emanu-El’s rabbi for the last seven years. Almost as soon as he arrived at the temple in 2017, Zanerhaft held a gospel Shabbat to celebrate Black History Month.

At least a few times a year, Zanerhaft, 66, hosts an Interfaith service.  He has always held such a  service just before the observance of Martin Luther King Jr., Day, and always during Black History Month.

There are Interfaith Shabbat services for

Irish History Month and Cinco de Mayo. There has been a special prayer service for the Ukrainian people who are battling a military onslaught by the Russian government.

“One of my guiding lights, for the temple and the community, is to make the place we live the best it can be,” Zanerhaft said.  “That means bringing harmony and peace and that has a beneficial impact on people.”

The Interfaith Services are popular in the community and attract leaders of other faiths, including Pastor Susan Bock of St. James of Jerusalem Episcopal Church of Long Beach, Anissa Moore, a minister at the Evangelical Revival Community Church in Long Beach’s

North Park section, and the Rev. Isaac Melton of Christian Light Church.

All denominations are encouraged to come to the Interfaith Shabbats, Zanerhaft said. “We’re all God’s children,” he said. “We all say the same prayers. But we need to put these things into action.”

Zanerhaft was born and raised in Brooklyn and lived in Oklahoma for 30 years. There, he was an assistant district attorney, having graduated from Vermont Law School in 1981. He was also an adjunct professor at the

University of Tulsa College or Law.

He was ordained in 2005 at the Rabbinic Seminary International in New York.

Zanerhaft was attracted to Long Beach through family members who live in the area. His sister, Fran Zanerhaft-Roemer, of Island Park, told him that Temple Emanu-El of Long Beach was in need of a new rabbi.

When he first joined, the congregation threw him a dessert party, catered by the Long Beach Bagel Café, an effort to reach out to the wider community.

is Harvey Weisenberg’s mission

While thinking of people that have helped those around them, you can’t name many before mentioning Harvey Weisenberg. In fact, he’s not only helped people, but entire towns and countries as well.

The 89-year-old grew up in Long Beach, spending much of his time as a city police officer, teacher and lifeguard. He even spent nearly 25 in the New York State Assembly. Even after all his years of service in various departments, he has kept his history of help in the present.

“God gave me an angel, a saint and a mission,” Weisenberg frequently says during his acts of giving. “My angel is my child, my saint is my wife and my mission is helping people.” He refers to his wife, Ellen, who died in 2016 at age 81, and to his son, Rickey, who

has cerebral palsy.

Weisenberg's mission continued last year in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic when he donated $25,000 to the public library in hopes to help support the preservation of the city’s history.

Not long after, Weisenberg gathered some of his old friends with the Long Beach Police Benevolent Association so he could hand them $5,000. Being a former PBA president, Weisenberg said he wanted to give a “thank you” to the officers.

Then, in December, his biggest donation — yet — took place. The war between Russia and Ukraine was at its worst. So, Weisenberg had an idea: collect $1 from every Long Beach resident and send the money to help the Ukrainian residents. Long Beach has a population of roughly 35,000.

“The Russian army wasn’t just invading and attacking Ukraine, they were attacking women and children,” Weisenberg said. “I couldn’t just stand by and watch that

It started to become difficult to keep track of so he had to stop accepting money from “the great people of Long Beach,” he said. He donated the rest of the money. In all, $38,000 was donated to Ukraine, $35,000 of it his own.

Don't expect Weisenberg to slow down anytime soon. The Long Beach Historical Society was a more recent beneficiary of his generosity, looking for help to get its West Penn Street building

Weisenberg presented the society with a check for $25,000.

He's spent decades on this planet, but he's always looking to the future.
