Business had just started to steady in March for Mitzs Walcott, owner of Mitzs Trend Inc., after a rough couple of months. But like all businesses across the state, any momentum her Rockaway Avenue salon had achieved abruptly ground to a halt when New York ordered salons, spas and barbershops closed in order to slow the spread of the coro-

navirus. At the time, in light of the dangers posed by the virus, Walcott met the setback with resignation. “What are we going to do?” she said. “Our life is more valuable than anything. It’s more valuable than money.” Almost three months later, Walcott was back on June 10, when Long Island began Phase 2 of reopening, and she hoped business would pick up quickly. If the first few days were any indication, she said,

that might very well be the case. She described a rush of clients on the Wednesday of reopening, and while rain on June 11 kept some customers away, she said she was fully booked last Friday and Saturday. “They couldn’t wait for this,” Walcott said, adding that after months stuck at home, her clients “can get their hair done.
