North Shore schools save big with energy-efficient heat pumps By BRIAN NORMAN bnorman@liherald.com
The installation of energy efficient heat pumps in the North Shore School District was an award-winning idea. The school district was recognized with the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers Technology Award for Engineering Excellence for Institutional Existing Buildings at their school board meeting on Oct. 10. The award was presented by Ecosystem Energy, which has been leading an energy-efficient Engineering, Procurement, and Construction project for the district since 2019. The original
idea was to add new air conditioning units to the middle and high schools that are cost effective. However, the final project far exceeded expectations. “The original design was for air conditioning, but as we developed the project, we decided to implement heat pumps instead,” said Ahmed Ibrahim, business development manager with Ecosystem Energy. “Heat pumps provide cooling, but they also offer a three-to-one heating coefficient. This means the district now has secondary heating systems that are electric and three times more efficient than fossil fuels.” Heat pumps are multifunctional tools that have been installed in 72 classrooms throughout CONTINUED ON PAGE 11
