Council aims to drive New York growth The formation of the Business Advisory Council, a new body of 15 business leaders who will meet quarterly with Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani and Deputy Mayor for Economic Justice Julie Su to help shape the city’s next phase of economic growth and innovation was unveiled on Aug. 27. The council will advise City Hall on the industries driving New York’s economy — including finance, technology, real estate, sports, e n t e r t a i n m e n t , re t a i l a n d health care — as well as the infrastructure, talent pipeline and regulatory environment those industries need to grow here rather than elsewhere. Members will help shape a more deliberate approach to s t re n g t h e n i n g t h e s e c t o r s where New York can lead nationally and globally, from biotech and finance to media Zohran Kwame and entertainment. mamdani “The doors of City Hall are always open to New York’s busiMayor ness leaders, and I look forward to welcoming their experience and strategic guidance as we build a stronger, more dynamic economy,” Mamdani, said in a news release. With nearly 6,000 private sector jobs added in the first half of this year, New York’s year-over-year job growth is more than double the national growth rate. Office space leasing numbers have been strong recently, with nearly 50-million-square-feet of office space leased over the past four quarters. City-based companies raised $21.2 billion in venture capital funding to date, 102 percent higher than the same period last year. “Building a business in New York has taught me that this city’s greatest resource has always been its people,” Brandon Blackwood, CEO of Brandon Blackwood

New York, said in the release. “Their ambition, creativity and willingness to take a chance on an idea. I’m honored to join the Business Advisory Council and bring the perspective of an entrepreneur who built something here from the ground up.” Keia Clarke, Chief Executive Officer, New York Liberty, noted in the release that, “Sports and entertainment have the power to drive economic growth, strengthen communities, and inspire the next generation of talent.” Dr. John D’Angelo, President and CEO of Northwell Health said that healthcare employs many people in the city. “I look forward to working alongside this impressive group of leaders to make New York the best place in the world to invest, innovate, and build a healthier future,” he said in the release. — Jeffrey Bessen

HAFTR teacher Allison Rahmani dies at 40 mberman@liherald.com

The Five Towns community is mourning the loss of Allison Rahmani, a Hebrew Academy of the Five Towns and Rockaway teacher and math coordinator who died Aug. 21 after the SUV she was driving crashed into an in-ground swimming pool at her Hewlett Bay Park home. Rahmani, 40, was driving a 2023 GMC in the driveway of a residence on Elinor Road at 9:29 a.m. when she lost control of the vehicle, according to Nassau County police. The SUV struck a tree and an unoccupied 2006 Honda before plunging into the backyard pool. Rahmani was removed from the vehicle before of ficers arrived. Responding officers performed lifesaving measures and she was transported to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead. She had been able to call for emergency assistance following the crash. The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation. Authorities have said foul play is not suspected and believe Rahmani may have suffered a sudden medical emer-

gency before losing control of the vehicle. Rahmani, who turned 40 just days before her death, was known for her dedication to her students and her commitment to education. She was also a mother of four and the wife of Matthew Rahmani, president of the Irving Place Minyan in Woodmere. At Rahmani’s funeral at Boulevard-Riverside Chapels in Hewlett on Aug. 23, her husband delivered an emotional tribute, reciting “Eshet Chayil,” the traditional Jewish “Woman of Valor” prayer often sung to a bride at a Jewish wedding. “I’m sorry I didn’t say that at her wedding,” Matthew said. “I can’t imagine more fitting words for the woman you were.” He described Rahmani as the person who stood beside him through every stage of their marriage, including the difficult early years when the couple was building a life together. “You took me by the hand, you pulled me, you said it would be OK, that you believed in me, in us,” he said. Matthew said Rahmani was unwavering in her support and helped guide the family through

The couple had been preparing to leave for a romantic trip to Paris on the day of her funeral. He described the way she nurtured their kids “like delicate plants” and said he would continue raising their children while carrying on the love and values she had given them. “I will pick up where you left

off,” he said. Rahmani’s mother, Rachelle Rohde, also delivered a eulogy, speaking directly to her daughter and the family she left behind. “We are broken,” Rohde said. “We will never be the same.” She told her grandchildren — Nathan, Jake, Zachary and Chloe — that their grandmoth-

er’s love would remain with them. “To my beloved grandchildren — Nathan, Jake, Zachary and Princess Chlo Chlo — and of course to the one-of-a-kind, her beloved husband, Matthew, Mama loves you all more than you will ever know and will be with you day and night,” Rohde said. Speaking to her daughter, Rohde said she believed Allison was watching over her family. “I know you are watching, I know,” she said. “We won’t let you down.” Shayna Unger, a close friend and fellow teacher, recalled how Rahmani created a makeshift beauty salon in her classroom, complete with brushes, hair gel, bar rettes, scr unchies and snacks, and did the girls’ hair each morning. “She wanted them to walk into school looking and feeling like every other girl,” Unger said. “She wanted their school days to feel as normal as possible.” HAFTR officials said the school community is grieving Rahmani’s death. “She loved her students,” Unger said.

Old Woodmere

Classic Charm Spacious Living

S

et on one of Old Woodmere’s most coveted streets, this classic sidehall Colonial offers timeless charm and generous living spaces. Highlights include a lemonade porch, sun-filled living room with wood-burning fireplace, eat-in kitchen with oversized pantry, first-floor bedroom and full bath, and large entertaining deck. Upstairs features a primary en-suite plus two additional bedrooms. A detached two-car garage, loft storage, and sought-after Hewlett Neck amenities with 24-hour security complete this exceptional home.

Q. We live in an area that was flooded, and have a few items to take care of before we sell. My husband put in a deck when we first moved in, around 1982. It has been there so long, but the real estate people told us it still needs a permit. It’s only 24 inches off the ground. They also mentioned that it’s too close to our back property line, but we’re next to a waterway and have no neighbors behind us. Is that still the same problem? Our fences are new and so are the front steps, which we rebuilt to add planters and a bench. What can you tell us about what we should do before we sell?

A. Take a lovely vacation and relax, enjoy yourself and then prepare for a lot of minutia that will likely delay your ability to sell, unless you negotiate the price down for a buyer who can persuade a lender that they will take over the list of items you mentioned. In situations like this, there are many peripheral issues. For example, the wateronte eeper way may be either a local or state jurisdiction that limits how close you can build to a “protected” environment. As if that’s not enough, your municipality is one of the few that has many outstanding requirements that it claims it notified every homeowner about right after Hurricane Sandy. Prepare for the ambush of having to get a “proof of loss statement from the National Flood Insurance Program.” I have heard time and time again, “Oh, we had no damage,” which is great, since the national clearinghouse that compiles records about every property will prove that. If it turns out that there was a large payout from private insurance or public funding, the NFIP letter will show that more is needed, including recent building plans, a possible plumbing permit, electrical inspection and documents to close out a repair permit — yes, even from over a decade ago. When I arrive at a home and have to go into detail about how many requirements there are and how strict they’ve become, I always think of our custodian in elementary school. His name was Gus, and I remember his large, round face and how disgusted he was when he was called to a classroom where a child had thrown up lunch from the cafeteria. I identify with Gus, because mopping up these not-so-simple messes, the ones that someone told you were simple, is getting more complicated the longer people wait. This doesn’t seem to be the case in every jurisdiction, mostly the largest ones. Many decks built long ago don’t meet recent code standards, and there’s no such thing as “grandfathered.” The hours spent explaining these things, and then reexplaining them when a handyperson doesn’t install the correct connectors or takes a shortcut with a required footing support, add up to more cost and animosity. Good luck!
