The coronavirus pandemic has affected every facet of the community, but has had an especially consequential impact on seniors. With more health concerns and increasingly dependent on others, seniors are not only more physically vulnerable, but at risk of more mental stress as well. In Rockville Centre, those who work with them, from Maple Pointe Assisted
Living to the Sandel Senior Center, are doing their best to provide seniors with extra emotional support. For the past four weeks, Tammy Marshall, executive director of Maple Pointe, in Rockville Centre, has not had a single day off. She and her staff of 106 have been attending to roughly 140 residents in their care around the clock, and have done their best to stay positive in an exhausting situation. “We’re trying to keep it
upbeat,” Marshall said, “and are so thankful that Rockville Centre has such strong community support.” While the residents must remain isolated from one another and from visitors, they are not alone. Maple Pointe staff members engage them in individual activities, Marshall said, and family members have made “window visits” or FaceTime calls to stay connected, and also use CONTINUED ON PAGE 3
