Gyms start reopening process in Oceanside, Island Park

Gyms in Oceanside and Island Park, along with the rest of the state, were set to reopen Aug. 24, following inspection by local authorities. Some opened, and some are still awaiting approval by Nassau County. Last week, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that gyms could reopen at 33 percent capacity, with face coverings required at all times and ven-
tilation that meets state guidelines. “Localities have a role here,” he said. “They have to inspect gyms before they open.” Cuomo added that the state’s Covid-19 infection rate was the lowest it has been since the pandemic began. “Congratulations to New Yorkers,” he said. “New Yorkers did what everyone said couldn’t be done. Going forward, we must protect the progress by keeping the infection rate down.”
On Friday, Island Park Fitness, on Austin Boulevard, was still submitting its reopening plans to Nassau County to be approved for indoor workouts. Gym owner Rob Moloney said that some of the state’s policies “are not 100 percent clear,” and since the announcement came less than a week ago, he was still developing a plan. The gym, however, has hosted outdoor fitness classes in its parking lot since last Continued on page 3
