County: L.B. Bridge repair may snarl traffic in Island Park By Mike SMolliNS msmollins@liherald.com

Traveling over the Long Beach Bridge between Island Park and Long Beach will be difficult for about a month, as the span undergoes extensive repairs that may cause traffic jams. Nassau County Deputy Director Michael Fricchione said the county will be working on the bridge daily through

Aug. 14, between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. “During this period, two of three lanes on the southbound bridge will remain open in order to facilitate the orderly flow of traffic,” he said. The bridge will be open for marine traffic at 10 a.m. and 1 and 4 p.m. during working hours. After 5 p.m. each day, the bridge will operate as it nor mally does. Fricchione noted that a barge might be positioned under the bridge to

assist with the repair work, and motorists and boaters are advised to plan accordingly. During an inspection, Fricchione said, corroded steel was found on the southbound portion of the bridg e, likely caused by the saltwater of Reynolds Channel. Though the bridge was found to be safe for travel, the issue needs to be addressed. Continued on page 5
