BALDWIN Rebuilt Bruins ready for an encore

hen Baldwin opens its 26th season under head coach Steve Carroll against Hicksville on Sept. 12, it will be a family affair. Running the Bruins defense, as he has been for the past quarter-century, will be Carroll’s brother, Rich. And standing on the opposite sideline, coaching Hicksville, will be Rich’s son, Rich Jr. “It’s kind of unique matchup,” Steve Carroll said. “We talk all the time, but there may not be much to say for a couple of days leading up to that one.” Carroll was complimentary of the job his nephew is doing at Hicksville, pointing to the Comets expanding roster as an indication that interest in the program is growing. Still, Rich Jr. is just getting started, while Steve Carroll has won 130 games in his career, and has taken the Bruins to four Nassau County finals, including last season, when they fell 21-9 to Farmingdale. The Bruins won six regular-season games in Conference I, then stormed past Syosset (37-13), Uniondale (28-0) and Oceanside (67-27), propelled in part by a pair of running backs, Javaun Tomlinson and Trayvon Mask, who each rushed for over 1,000 yards out of Carroll’s vaunted Power-I formation. Tomlinson, Mask and a host of other contributors have moved on – Carroll said this year’s roster is a 50-50 split between seniors and underclassmen – but the coach is eager for another season on the sidelines. CALHOUN Colts working to establish identity

ringing aboard a third head coach in three seasons has made for a challenging summer as Calhoun gets set for the gridiron this fall. Mike Buck, previously an offense coordinator for the Colts until 2011, returns as the new head coach and spent most of his time figuring out the who’s, what’s and where’s of Calhoun football. “We’re evaluating what we have,” he said. “I’ve never coached any of the [current] kids in football. We spent the summer and first couple of weeks of camp evaluating talent.” Though Buck does have a recent history with some of the players who may lined up for him on the JV lacrosse team as ninth-graders, he isn’t working with a reshuffled roster, but almost an entirely new one. On top of evaluating the small number of returning seniors, Buck also spent time evaluating a large class of juniors and a huge influx of 40 freshman that were trying out for the program. “We’re trying to find the pulse about what Calhoun is all about,” he said. Few, if any positions were locked up after the first handful of practices, and as the Colts look to find an identity, perhaps it will come from their new quarterback. Senior Zach Mastrangelo, a standout baseball player, has done a little of everything on offense during his football career, working as a wide receiver and even grabbing some carries in the backfield. CAREY Talented Seahawks in mix for crown

or the second consecutive season, Carey’s title hopes ended with a loss to Garden City in the Nassau Conference II semifinals. The Trojans went on to win their 20th county title, including a fourth in a row, and fifth Long Island championship. With a slew of talent returning and numerous weapons at skill positions, this could be the year the Seahawks get past Garden City and end their long championship drought. Carey seeks its first county title in 1978. Carey, which finished 7-3 overall in 2012, is the No.2 seed. With a schedule comprising matchups with Wantagh, Long Beach, Elmont, MacArthur, Mepham, Herricks, South Side, and Garden City, the Seahawks don’t have an easy road. The Seahawks and head coach Mike Stanley have made the trek to Hofstra each of the past six years, but they’re not getting ahead of themselves. “There’s no question about where we’d like to be, but we’re not thinking about November,” Stanley said. “We’re practicing hard and getting prepared for the season. The nice thing is that we’ve got the tempo going already, because the guys know the system. The key is going to be staying healthy, and getting ready for each week’s game. If we do that, we should have a chance to win every week.” Fresh off a breakout season at quarterback, senior Ray Catapano, an All-County recipient, should have Carey’s spread attack running like a well-oiled machine. CLARKE Ground attack sets tone for Rams

For Clarke, however, the runheavy offense has proven to be quite effective as the program has captured 11 playoff berths in the last 12 seasons. Head coach John Boyle doesn’t stand pat and continues to develop the offense, and some more new wrinkles are possible for 2013. “We’ve made it a little fancier with the shotgun [formation] and trying to confuse the traditional Wing-T with some of the modern offenses [over the years],” Boyle said. “Sometimes we’ll be in the regular Wing-T with three backs.” Seeded No. 8 in Conference IV, Clarke again has the appearance of a team capable of contending for a playoff berth. A pair of juniors, Juan Gomes and John Zaino were battling for snaps under center during summer camp, and both are well-rounded players with starts under their belt for the JV last season. It’s possible senior Peter Falgiano, who ran for nearly 500 yards while under center for the varsity last season, will also get some reps. EAST MEADOW Jets appear title contenders as usual

ast Meadow always has its hat in the ring when it comes to rattling off the top Conference I football teams in Nassau County, and 2013 doesn’t look any different. Seeded No. 4, the Jets return a wealth of depth and talent in the backfield and at linebacker and have some newcomers primed to make an impact on both sides of the ball. The engine flying the East Meadow offense is senior running back Billy Andrle, who’s coming off a regular-season campaign that included 1,307 yards rushing (163.4 per game) and 23 touchdowns and earned him the Thorp Award as Nassau’s top player. Andrle became just the second junior to win the award in its 70-year history and opens his senior season with 35 career touchdowns. “He has a combo of strength and speed that you usually don’t find,” head coach Vin Mascia said of the 5-10, 230-pounder. “He’s going to run through you or away from you.” Joining Andrle in the backfield is senior Bobby Bender, an versatile All-Conference returnee, and seniors Nick Conti, Adam Suchocki and Johnny Keicher. East Meadow welcomes a new quarterback to the huddle, and the summer battle came down to juniors Adam Arbuse and Brian Kavanagh. EAST ROCKAWAY Inexperienced Rocks hope to compete

ust two years ago, the East Rockaway Rocks went on one of the finest runs in program history before being narrowly defeated by Roosevelt in the Conference IV title game. The Rocks faced a very difficult schedule in 2012, and, despite being in nearly every game, they mustered only two victories. With few experienced players back, and a lack of depth at nearly every position, the 2013 campaign will be a challenging one. Fortunately for the Rocks, being seeded No.13 means the orange-and-black won’t face elite teams such as Roosevelt, Seaford, and West Hempstead. For Russ Pajer, in his 19th season as head coach, being a low seed is not the norm. “We haven’t been seeded this low since the late 90s,” he said. “We’re very inexperienced, and have a lot of players coming out for the first time. We’re back to basics and teaching the fundamentals. There are a lot of question marks, so it’s going to take some time to figure out where guys will fit in.” The Rocks have two quarterbacks who are capable of running the double wing offense. Senior Joe Sheridan, who had some positive moments as a junior, hopes to get some snaps. Sophomore Mike Delgais appears to have the upper hand. The athletic Delgais has a strong command of the offense, can run the ball well, and has a strong throwing arm. If East Rockaway is going to be successful, it will do so by controlling the ball. ELMONT Ball-hawking defense to lead Spartans

ast season was a rollercoaster ride for Elmont, which after a 3-1 start settled for a .500 regularseason finish in Conference II and suffered an opening round playoff defeat at MacArthur. This year’s Spartans will bring a different look and a slight change in philosophy, head coach Jay Hegi said. They’ll be small and quick, and boast an influx of youth. “We played a heck of a playoff game at MacArthur and probably deserved better,” he said. “We bring back some nice athletes on both sides [of the ball], and we have enough talent to make the playoffs and be a handful come Week 9.” Seeded fifth, Elmont will try to get off to a fast start with back-to-back games against the conference’s two lowest-ranked teams out of the gate. It opens at No. 12 Westbury on Sept. 12, followed by a visit from No. 11 Kennedy in Week 2. “Anything can happen and we’re not going to take anyone lightly, but it’s important for us to take care of business in the first two games,” Hegi said. Hegi expects his defense to be tough as nails and swarm the ball. Senior Matthew Brutus will be the catalyst at outside linebacker after ranking second on the unit in tackles last season. “He’s a great kid on and off the field,” Hegi said of Brutus, who also excels in the classroom. “He plays much bigger than he seems. He’s strong, and quick enough to play anywhere on defense.” Seniors Valdy Valere and Lahens Vassor will lead the effort up front from the tackle spots. FREEPORT Red Devils seek return to success

rior to the 2012 season, long-time Freeport head coach Russ Cellan had no idea what to expect from his team. Despite the fact the Red Devils had appeared in the county championship game the previous four seasons, winning three of them, graduation had taken its toll. A combination of youth and inexperience was too much for the Red Devils to overcome, and they finished with a disappointing record of 1-7. Freeport, which has won the Rutgers Cup 11 times, and has brought home four Class I Long Island titles, hopes that its fall from the ranks of perennial contenders will be a brief one. The No. 9 seed in Conference I will not have an easy go at it. In addition to matchups with No.1 Massapequa, No. 3 Oceanside, and No. 5 Baldwin, the Red Devils will face Uniondale, Hicksville, Valley Stream Central, Plainview JFK, and Hempstead. Jimmy Jones, a 1994 first team All-Long Island selection and current Freeport assistant coach, says the game plan is still the same. “We haven’t changed our approach at all,” Jones said. “We’re trying to get back to being the top team in the conference. The kids learned from last year, and the coaches learned from last year. We’re approaching it like every other season.” The Red Devils have had numerous Thorp Award winners and finalists, and players who have gone on to the NFL. HEWLETT Offense is key to Bulldogs’ formula

xperienced in some areas but unsettled in others, Hewlett won’t have to wait long to try to avenge a pair of 2012 losses to Glen Cove when it travels to face the Big Red in the opener on Sept. 12. “Glen Cove got us twice last year,” said Bulldogs head coach Jay Iaquinta, whose team finished 4-5 overall. “It’s funny how the schedule plays out some years. They’re seeded fourth and we’re the six, so it should be a pretty good game.” Hewlett brings back plenty of depth up front, along with good team speed, Iaqunita said, but is unproven at quarterback and in the secondary. “We’ve got a mixed bag when it comes to returning starters and spots we need filled,” he said. “We have to sort out the quarterback situation and go from there.” In Hewlett’s triple-option offense, the decision-making of the signal-caller is crucial. Heading into the second week of camp, Iaquinta said junior Jeff Rizzo, last year’s JV starter, and sophomore Josh Pincus, who took some handoffs from Rizzo, were on equal ground. “We ask so much of our quarterback,” Iaquinta said. “Jeff and Josh both move well and throw well. Reading the defense is the No. 1 requirement, so we’ll see how it plays out.” Whether it’s Rizzo or Pincus, experience in the backfield will help the Bulldogs move the ball and find the end zone. KENNEDY Cougars boast fair share of playmakers

ew Kennedy head coach Tim Dolan has some playmakers on offense and when the Cougars transition to defense, the potential for big things happening remains with several taking on two-way roles. Seeded No. 11 in Conference II, Kennedy looks to return to the playoffs after squeezing in as the final seed a year ago. “If we can get the ball to the outside and [players] in one-on-one [situations] we’ll be good,” Dolan said. “It’s all going to come down to putting guys in space. We have a great group of kids that have given me a warm welcome and the staff and community have been great.” Senior Michael Kaplan takes over under center after seeing time at wide receiver last season, and his legs stand to be just as dangerous as his arm. “He’s a very smart kid,” Dolan said. “He’s fast and I definitely think he can be a threat with his feet. His short passing is pretty accurate.” When Kaplan drops back to pass, he’ll be targeting senior Tyler Barnett who not only has strong hands and quick feet, he’s proven he can go up and pluck the ball out of the air. Senior David Chen, a multi-sport athlete who also runs track, hopes to put his speed to good use on the football field, and senior tight ends Dom Albi and Josh Greenberg are also in the offensive mix. The Golden Tornadoes, who capped an undefeated 12-win campaign with a thrilling 21-20 victory over Sayville in the Long Island Class III championship game, enter 2013 looking for a sixth county title in eight years. “Last year was really special,” head coach Joe Martillotti said. “We accomplished everything we set out to do, but it’s behind us and we’re bringing back only six full-time starters. It’s difficult to repeat as Long Island champs, but that’s our goal.” Senior quarterback Joe Capobianco, who threw for a Long Island single-season record 38 touchdowns a year ago to become Nassau’s career leader with 67, and broke his own county mark for single-season passing yards (2,609), is back to lead the top-ranked squad in Conference III. He completed 129 of 166 attempts (77.7 percent) and was picked off only three times. ong Beach had its share of memorable moments on the gridiron in 2012, including a five-game winning streak out of the gate and a hard-fought 20-18 loss to perennial power Garden City in Week 6 before a standingroom-only home crowd. But last season will always be known for the devastation left behind by superstorm Sandy and how the Marines persevered to the Conference II playoffs. “It’s nothing as a team or a community we ever want to go through again,” head coach Scott Martin said. “Looking back, it was a miracle we were able to participate in the playoffs. We have so many people to thank for making it possible.” The Marines, unable to practice for more than a week and without equipment just days before the start of the playoffs, lost in the first round at Carey. They finished 5-4 overall and bring back an experienced offensive line and some talented skill players. “I’m confident we can compete with anyone,” Martin said. “Our goal this year is to try to get a home playoff game and make a run at [the semifinals] Hofstra.” Seeded No. 6 in the 12-team conference, Long Beach opens under the lights Sept. 12 at MacArthur. LYNBROOK Owls set to battle on new turf field

he 2012 campaign felt like two morphed into one for Lynbrook, which changed its offensive philosophy at the midway mark and went on to capture three of its last four games to finish the regular season at .500 and extend its streak of playoff appearances to seven years. There’s usually no stacking up to the Owls when it comes to numbers, and they’re bring back upwards of 25 players from a team that lost 54-41 at Plainedge in a thrilling Nassau Conference III first-round playoff game. “We’re coming off an exciting last five games,” head coach Steve LoCicero said. “Our goal is always to be playing our best come November.” There’s plenty of buzz around town for this year’s opener, set for Sept. 12 against visiting Sewanhaka. Installation for a new turf field at the Owls home at Marion Street School began in the spring and nears completion. The contract calls for the muchanticipated artificial surface to be ready in time for kickoff. “It’s great for the entire community,” LoCicero said of the new field. “Everyone’s looking forward to it.” Lynbrook’s offense is big, experienced, and versatile up front. “There’s a lot we can do with the ball,” said LoCicero, who has four starters returning on the line and many interchangeable. “We have a lot of juniors that played last year, so we’re a little ahead of [last year’s] pace.” The only new face in the offensive trenches will be at center, where senior Dererk Colannino and junior Ryan Coughlin are working hard 36 — September 12, 2013

Kelleher would typically carry the ball between 20-25 times each game last season but for 2013 Fehrenbach is planning to spread out the handoffs between seniors Tom McAndrew, James Noble and Carmine Criscione along with sophomore Jared Wolf. MALVERNE Mules excited for fresh start

t’s a fresh start for Malverne, which suffered through a winless and injury plagued 2012 campaign in Conference IV. The Mules, seeded No. 11 in the 14-team conference, are “taking it one step at a time,” coach Kito Lockwood said, but eager to put last year in the rearview mirror. “The attitude and morale is the best we’ve had here in five years,” Lockwood said. “We have class-act kids. We won the team sportsmanship award last season, which says a lot about the character. We want to continue that and win some games. “We had some tough breaks,” he added. “We were slammed by injuries and didn’t get it together until Week 5, and that’s when the most difficult part of the schedule kicked in.” Three of Malverne’s first four games come against a double-digit seed, starting with a visit to Carle Place on Sept. 16. After hosting thirdseeded Seaford in their home opener in Week 2, the Mules travel to Oyster Bay and host Cold Spring Harbor to complete the first half of the schedule. “After the lack of success we’ve had in recent years, we’re not in position to take anyone for granted,” Lockwood said. “We’re definitely capable of a good start if we play Malverne football, but we’ve got our work cut out. ot even a rash of injuries to key players could keep Mepham out of the 2012 Conference II playoffs, but the goal for the ’13 season was clear soon after the program’s fourth straight berth: develop depth to go along with a young, but experienced and highly talented core group. “We finished 4-4 in one of the craziest years [in terms] of injuries sustained,” head coach Anthony Cracco said. “Our big focus as a program was to get deeper as far as having more interchangeable pieces and more depth.” Seeded No. 7, the Pirates boast a deep group of receivers and running backs, giving second-year starting quarterback Tyler Davis plenty to work with. Davis, a 6-4, 200-pound junior is a pass-run threat coming off an AllConference campaign as an underclassman and continues to improve. “He can run and make any throw on the field,” Cracco said. “He is the complete package. He recognizes defenses, studies the game and is a leader in every sense of the word.” Davis has a versatile group of backs to hand off to, led by seniors Chris Durkin and Chris Gabriel, junior Joe Moran and sophomore Joe Franco. Durkin is a returning starter, while Gabriel flashed potential late last year. Moran, like Gabriel, is elusive, and Franco, who pulled up to varsity as a freshman, is more of a downhill runner. “Every offense is looking to have flexibility and put defenses in binds,” Cracco said. OCEANSIDE Sailors seek trip to county finals

ceanside has become a perennial contender in Conference I under head coach Rob Blount, who’s guided the Sailors to a playoff victory and semifinal appearance at Hofstra in three straight seasons. Getting over the hump and into the championship game, Blount said, is the next step. For that to happen in 2013, however, the revamped Sailors must negotiate a wicked schedule with only one returning skill position starter on offense. The road begins Sept. 12 with a visit from Uniondale. “We’ve changed the culture and set a standard for success, which is something I’m proud of,” Blount said. “To make the Big Four three straight years in Conference I is a tremendous achievement, and now we’re looking to play for the county championship. We’re trying to get over that hump which is the semifinals.” Oceanside went 8-2 last season, falling only to Baldwin during the regular season and again in the semifinals. The Sailors, seeded No. 3, host the Bruins for Homecoming on Sept. 28. “We’ve got quite the schedule,” Blount explained. “It’s definitely the toughest since I’ve been here. To have Farmingdale, Baldwin, Freeport, East Meadow and Massapequa in a five-game stretch is crazy.” Under Blount, offense has been the lynchpin to Oceanside’s success. ROOSEVELT Rough Riders can prove a handful

wo-time defending Nassau Conference IV champion Roosevelt returns 17 starters from a team that won the program’s 11th county championship in 2012. The Rough Riders knocked off Valley Stream North, 26-21, to earn county supremacy before falling to Babylon in the Long Island title game. With the nucleus of a solid offensive line intact, and a second team All-Long Island running back returning, Roosevelt is the team to beat in Conference IV. Head coach Joe Vito knows the type of personnel he has. “This is a veteran group with a lot of experience,” Vito said. “The linemen have been together for quite some time. There’s not a lot of teaching going on, and I haven’t had to yell much. We were able to get right to it.” Johnnie Akins, who rushed for nearly 2,300 yards and scored 25 touchdowns as a junior, has blazing speed and increased strength. When Akins is able to turn the corner, forget catching him. Fullback Rob Hansen, a threeyear starter, is an outstanding blocker who is effective running the ball between the tackles. Junior Justin Terry returns behind center. Terry is an excellent game manager, who will be asked to do a little more this season. While running the ball is clearly the team’s strength, Terry’s ability to throw makes the Rough Riders even more dangerous. SEAFORD Vikings aiming for conference crown

ob Perpall has built a Seaford football dynasty since taking over as head coach nearly two decades ago with six Nassau Conference IV titles including four in a row from 2007-10. In the last two seasons however, the Vikings have fallen short of the championship stage with last year’s team dropping a 21-17 heartbreaker to Valley Stream North in the semifinals after an undefeated regular season. Seaford is looking to reclaim its championship form in 2013 with many new starters after losing some key players to graduation. “They are very enthusiastic and want to win a title,” said Perpall of his team’s mindset entering the 2013 campaign. Seaford’s leader on offense and defense is senior lineman James O’Hagan, who has attracted interest from several colleges including the University at Buffalo, which competes amongst the top programs in the Football Bowl Subdivision. O’Hagan is also a top-notch wrestler who finished third in the state last winter in the 285-pound weight class. “O’Hagan is a big time player with a great attitude,” Perpall said. “I think he is one of the premier linemen on Long Island.” Other linemen joining O’Hagan in the trenches include seniors Anthony Amendolara, John Laretti, John Rizzo and Tom Galente. “We’re going to be fine on the line,” Perpall said. SEWANHAKA Indians strive for consistency, playoffs

With perennial power Lawrence, and solid teams such as Plainedge, Lynbrook, Bethpage and Hewlett always in the hunt, the league promises a tough opponent each weekend. Sewanhaka should be improved as it returns a good number of starters from a team that finished 2-6 in 2012, and brings up a slew of players from a JV that posted some big wins. The No.7 Indians face a very difficult schedule, but head coach George Kasimatis is optimistic about his team’s ability to have a bounce-back season. “The league is real tough, but I think we should be in the mix,” Kasimatis said. “We preach the same thing every year, which is to try to get better every week. In the end, the ultimate goal is always to be a playoff team, but the idea is to always leave it all out there. If we can be a little more consistent than last year, and limit the big plays, we should be in good shape.” Senior quarterback Jake Mellon returns as the signal caller for the Indians. With a year under his belt running the spread attack, and a few more weapons to throw to, Mellon, a solid drop back passer, could be set to have a big year. or South Side, there is definitely strength in numbers. When head coach Phil Onesto took over a program decidedly down on its luck before the 2011 season, he went to work with a roster numbering in the twenties, or hardly enough to field a competitive team without running everyone ragged. But Onesto was tireless. He remembered a time a decade earlier, when he was a star player under longtime head coach Walter Denton, when home games were popping and the Cyclones were playoff-bound. Onesto’s goal was to get the program back to that level, and he knew it was not going to happen overnight. The Cyclones who had won just once in 2011, won twice in Onesto’s first season, but even then it was clear things were improving. The Cyclones, even in losses, were more competitive from game to game. Interest began to rise. South Side got back to .500 last year, finishing 4-4, and missing the Conference III playoffs by the narrowest of margins. Another indication that the program is on better footing is its move for the upcoming season back to Conference II, its traditional home. But Onesto is particularly excited about another development: lots of eager players, even despite the graduation of 22 seniors from last year’s team. “We have 45 players on the roster right now,” he said. “We are a work in progress, but it’s a good problem to have when you’re ordering more helmets. Head coach Frank Chimienti is looking for the Eagles to be competitive — five of their losses in 2012 were by 26 points or more — and to focus on nobody but themselves. “I handed out a schedule to all the kids and listed ‘Central’ as the opponent each week,” he said. “We can only control what we do. We had a great turnout during the offseason and bring back a good amount of starters. “We’re working just as hard as any team out there,” Chimienti added. “Being in Conference I is an incredible challenge. Last year we had some early adversity and couldn’t overcome it. This year we’re looking for a better start. It’s all about momentum.” Central is ranked 10th in the 12-team conference, ahead of the two rivals it defeated a year ago — Hempstead and Hicksville. The Eagles kick the season off Sept. 12 with a trip to Hempstead, and visit Syosset before hosting powerhouse East Meadow in Week 3. Pivotal games in the playoff race will come in the second half when the Eagles face the No. 8 (Plainview), 9 (Freeport) and 7 (Uniondale) seeds over the final four weeks. “I like the balance of the schedule,” Chimienti said. alley Stream North’s roster won’t look anything like it did a year ago when the Spartans finished 7-4 overall and played in the Nassau Conference IV title game, but head coach Tom Schiavo said he’s getting a great vibe in camp. “The enthusiasm, attitude and work ethic of the 30 kids we graduated is alive in the ones we brought back,” Schiavo said. “We’ve got another great group of kids, and they want to achieve everything they can. They’re ready to make their mark. “Last year was tremendous,” he added. “We put ourselves in position to play for a championship. We lost almost every starter, but that means opportunity is knocking for everyone.” The revamped Spartans have a tall order out of the gate when they travel to face two-time defending conference champion and No. 1 seed Roosevelt on Sept. 12. The Rough Riders squeaked out a 26-21 victory over North last Nov. 25 at Hofstra to take the crown. “Facing Roosevelt in the opener is a win-win situation,” Schiavo explained. “They’ve got an incredible amount of talent back. ast season was nothing short of special for Valley Stream South, which hosted — and won — a first-round playoff game and reached the Conference III semifinals at Hofstra. The Falcons went 6-4, with two losses to undefeated Lawrence and two others by single digits to Plainedge and Floral Park. “There was a lot of excitement last year,” head coach Lance Griffin said. “We completed some unfinished business with a special, seniorheavy team. “We don’t have nearly as much experience this year,” he added. “We have good athletes but only a handful of starters are back.” The defense, under the direction of Scott Stueber, was particularly gutted by graduation. Not a single fulltime starter returns to the unit, so everything was to be determined in scrimmages and practice. “It’s going to be a constant learning process,” Griffin said. “We’re going to see how the personnel develops and see where everyone belongs.” Stueber prefers to employ four down linemen in the trenches for the Falcons, who were tabbed the No. 10 seed and open Sept. 12 with a trip to Division. Seniors Frank Romano and Enrique Morales are likely to start in the middle up front and lead the way against the run. Morales could also see time at linebacker, but that group appears to have strength in numbers. “Frank and Enrique are strong, tough kids,” Griffin said. “We’ll count on them to lead us on both sides of the ball up front.” 66 — September 12, 2013

WANTAGH Warriors have eyes on big prize

ollowing a 2012 season that saw Wantagh come within a few minutes of a Nassau County title, the returning Warriors have hit the ground running in 2013 both on and off the field. Wantagh came in third place in summer passing competitions held at Rutgers and the U.S. Military Academy. The Warrior players also gathered for some team bonding through paintball in Suffolk County the weekend before preseason practices got underway on Aug. 19. Leading up to the summer, head coach Keith Sachs said his team was hard at work in the winter and spring months waking up at 6 a.m. many days for weight training before school. “This is one of the most dedicated teams I’ve ever had,” said Sachs, who has won 117 games in his two decades on the Wantagh sidelines. “These guys have a tremendous work ethic.” Last year saw Wantagh finish third in Conference II and reach the county finals after playoff wins against Mepham and MacArthur in overtime. The Warriors’ season ended in heartbreak on the championship stage however when recent nemesis Garden City rallied from a 10-point secondhalf deficit and got the winning touchdown off a 11-yard run from Justin Guterding with just 9:36 remaining. Garden City has ended Wantagh’s season the past four years including the last two in the county finals. In order for Wantagh to achieve its first county title since 2004, the Warriors will have to do so without some key contributors from last year’s 8-3 squad including

fter some trying times, West Hempstead has made a name for itself on the football field over the past three seasons. The Rams finished 7-1 in the regular season in 2012, and beat Clarke handily in the opening round of the playoffs, but saw their title dreams come to an end when they fell to eventual champion Roosevelt in the Nassau Conference IV semifinal round. With talented and experienced linemen, and a bevy of talent at the skill positions, there’s no reason to the think No.2 West Hempstead won’t be in the thick of things come November. Perennial power and No.1 seed Roosevelt is still the team to beat, and No. 3 Seaford, as always, will be a factor in determining Conference IV supremacy. Rams head coach Dom Carre likes having a veteran bunch. “You know what they say, you can’t teach experience,” Carre said. “We have a lot of guys who have been with the program for a long time. It’s made practice much easier, because there aren’t nearly as many question marks as we’ve had in the past. I’ve actually had to slow down a bit, because we were moving a little too fast. The guys are very motivated.” The Rams have a chance to have one of the best backfields in the county with senior Enrique McFarlane and junior Bruce Gibbs. McFarlane rushed for a season-high 150 yards and scored twice in the playoff win over Clarke.
