Traffic and road improvements are coming to a stretch of Bellmore Avenue, between North Jerusalem Avenue and Newbridge Road in Bellmore, aiming to slow traffic, enhance pedestrian safety and mitigate accidents. “The Nassau County Department of Public Works Engineering Unit recently completed a comprehensive traffic study in this area, responding to numerous requests from community members to evaluate and address safety concerns along the corridor,” County Legislator Michael Giangregorio wrote in a letter, mailed to
constituents on Nov. 6. “The study involved gathering and analyzing traffic data and has led to the development of several recommended alternatives aimed at improving safety for both pedestrians and vehicles.” The section of roadway where the study was conducted is a route for many students who attend elementary schools in the North Bellmore School District. Older students who take buses, and attend high school and middle school in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District, may also be impacted by safety improvements, because the changes aim to slow drivers’ speeds and improve pedestrians’ ability to cross a major Continued on page 11
