Central District plans series of outdoor graduations

The Bellmore-Mer rick Central High School District was forced to shut down schools and shift to remote learning in March, raising questions about how the final chapter of the class of 2020’s high school career would be celebrated. Recently, administrators announced that each high school would hold outdoor graduation ceremonies

on June 27 and 28. The district comprises three high schools: Sanford H. Calhoun, John F. Kennedy and Wellington C. Mepham. High school principals informed graduating seniors and their families about the plan via email on June 8, a day after Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that outdoor ceremonies of up to 150 people would be permitted in New York. “Although we recently announced our plans to hold a

walk-through graduation event, we feel that a slight adjustment is in order to provide our families with a more memorable commencement,” Kennedy Principal Gerard Owenburg wrote. Each high school will host six ceremonies on June 27 and 28, with roughly 50 students attending each. The ceremonies will be broken up alphabetically, based on students’ last names. Bellmore School Board Incumbent Jay Breakstone was re-elected in an uncontested race. He received 1,821 votes. North Bellmore School District budget Total: $58 million Passed, 2,928 to 1,793 North Bellmore school board Christine Malloy was elected to her first three-year term with 2,394 votes. She was challenged by Peter Mayo, who received 1,545 votes.
