Whether you’re a lifelong resident or new to Glen Cove, this guide is your passport to explore the experiences, resources Stuart and connections that define living here. Richner This year’s cover features a lively collage of images that capture the rhythms of daily life — signature events such as the city’s St. Patrick’s Day parade, the Morgan Park Summer Music Festival, high school athletics, residents participating in the Long Island Runs Too running club, and the North Shore Hispanic Chamber of Commerce’s Hispanic Heritage Month celebration. Together these moments capture the spirit of a city that’s among Long Island’s most dynamic places to live, work and visit. Inside these pages is a curated look at the parks, schools, library, community organizations, dining destinations and historical legacy — the places and stories that give the city its distinct character. Rooted in compassion C By Roksana Amid

ommunity service remains a defining part of life in Glen Cove, where local nonprofit organizations continue working to support residents, veterans, families and animals in need. Through volunteerism, outreach programs and fundraising efforts, groups across the city help strengthen connections within the community while providing important services yearround.

NOSH Delivers Founded during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, NOSH Delivers has grown into a major food assistance organization serving Glen Cove and surrounding communities. Operating from the James E. Donahue Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 347 building on Hill Street, NOSH provides food pantry services and grocery deliveries to families facing food insecurity. The organization distributes groceries, meal ingredients and household staples to over 750 residents each week. NOSH also operates programs supporting children and families during weekends, holidays and school breaks, when school meal programs may not be available. The organization relies heavily on volunteers and donations from local businesses, schools, civic groups and residents. Food drives and community fundraisers throughout the year help support Roksana Amid/Herald the organization’s growing Quincy Bartlet, Olivia Vilz and Daniela Agustin, members of the North Shore High School Key Club, mission. volunteered to help sort fresh produce for NOSH.

Tribute and Honor Foundation The Tribute and Honor Foundation is dedicated to recognizing and supporting veterans, active-duty military members and first responders throughout the Glen Cove area. Founded by residents Jeanine DiMenna and Gaitley Stevenson-Mathews, the organization has become known for its veterans recognition programs, patriotic ceremonies and community outreach initiatives. One of the foundation’s most recognizable projects is the city’s military banner program, 16

which honors local veterans with banners displayed throughout Glen Cove. The organization also hosts awards ceremonies and collaborates with veterans organizations on memorial programs and educational initiatives. The foundation works to preserve the stories and sacrifices of veterans while encouraging community involvement and appreciation for military service.

Cove Animal Rescue For animal lovers throughout the area, Cove Animal Rescue serves as an important community resource focused on rescuing and caring for abandoned and neglected pets. Located on Shore Road, the no-kill shelter provides temporary housing, medical care and adoption services for cats and dogs in need of permanent homes. The organization depends on volunteers, foster families and donations to continue operating.Volunteers assist with feeding, cleaning, transportation and adoption events, while community fundraisers help offset veterinary and operational costs. Cove Animal Rescue also promotes responsible pet ownership and animal welfare education through outreach efforts and adoption programs.

A community built on volunteerism Together, organizations like NOSH Delivers, the Tribute and Honor Foundation and Cove Animal Rescue reflect Glen Cove’s strong culture of volunteerism and civic involvement. All continue to make a lasting impact throughout the community while bringing residents together in support of shared causes. 2026 - 2027

ordered by the waters of Hempstead Harbor and the Long Island Sound, Glen Cove reveals itself in layers — a waterfront city shaped by immigration, industry, resilience and reinvention. While many know Glen Cove for its marinas, beaches and revitalized waterfront, the city’s deeper identity is often found in quieter places: historic side streets, longtime neighborhood institutions and overlooked landmarks that continue to reflect generations of community life. Long before Glen Cove became one of Nassau County’s only two cities, the area was home to the Matinecock people, who lived along the shoreline and relied on the harbor’s resources for survival and trade. European settlers later arrived in the 1600s, drawn by the region’s protected waters and fertile land. Over time, the settlement evolved into an important industrial and maritime center on Long Island. By the 19th century, Glen Cove had become known for shipbuilding, milling, brickmaking and oyster processing. Factories lined portions of the waterfront, attracting immigrant workers from Ireland, Italy and Eastern Europe. Those communities helped shape the city’s culture, traditions and neighborhoods — influences that remain visible today through local businesses, churches and annual celebrations. At the same time, Glen Cove became part of Long Island’s famed Gold Coast era. Wealthy industrialists built sprawling estates overlooking Hempstead Harbor, transforming sections of the city into retreats for some of America’s most prominent families. Members of the Pratt family and other influential figures established estates throughout the North Shore, leaving behind architectural reminders of Glen Cove’s Gilded Age past.

Still, some of Glen Cove’s most meaningful places are not its grandest landmarks. Morgan Memorial Park has long served as a gathering place for residents, offering waterfront views, concerts and community events that bring generations together during the summer months. The harbor surrounding the park remains central to the city’s identity, connecting modern Glen Cove to its maritime history. Nearby, Garvies Point Preserve preserves one of Long Island’s most significant geological and archaeological sites. The wooded trails and glacial cliffs provide a glimpse into the region’s natural history while protecting Native American artifacts and ecosystems that often go unnoticed by visitors passing through the city. Downtown Glen Cove also reflects the Courtesy Gaitley Stevenson-Mathews city’s evolving identity. Older storefronts The Deep Roots Farmers Market, in Village Square, is a treasure trove stand beside newer developments, while of locally sourced delights. restaurants and small businesses represent cultures from around the world. Glen Cove’s large Hispanic and immigrant communities have become an increasingly important part of the city’s economic and cultural fabric, helping shape neighborhood life and local traditions. Religious and civic institutions continue to anchor the community as well. The Church of St. Rocco remains closely tied to the city’s Italian-American heritage, particularly during the annual Feast of St. Rocco, which fills the streets with music, food and religious processions each summer. Community organizations, volunteer groups and local nonprofits continue to play a major role in supporting residents and preserving Glen Cove’s strong sense of civic pride. Glen Cove continues to maintain a distinct identity shaped by both its history and its people. It is a city where industrial roots meet waterfront beauty, where immigrant traditions remain deeply woven into daily life, and where longtime residents and newcomers continue contributing to the next chapter of the community’s story. For many who call Glen Cove home, the city’s true character is not found in a single landmark or headline. Glen Cove’s outdoor treasures By Roksana Amid

Parks shape community life From waterfront promenades to neighborhood ballfields and wooded preserves, Glen Cove’s parks are woven into the rhythm of daily life. Across the city, residents gather for concerts, youth sports, walks along the harbor and quiet moments outdoors. Together, these public spaces reflect both Glen Cove’s coastal identity and its strong sense of community.

Morgan Memorial Park remains a summer centerpiece Set along Hempstead Harbor, Morgan Memorial Park has long served as one of Glen Cove’s most recognizable public gathering places. The waterfront park draws residents throughout the year, but especially during the summer months, when thousands gather on Sunday evenings for the Morgan Park Summer Music Festival. Families spread out lawn chairs beneath the trees while boats drift in the harbor behind the stage. The park’s open green spaces, walking paths and beach access make it a destination not only for concerts, but also for recreation, relaxation and community events. Generations of residents have memories tied to the park, from childhood summers to annual traditions that continue today.

Garvies Point Park reflects Glen Cove’s evolving waterfront A short distance from downtown, Garvies Point Park offers sweeping waterfront views and modern public spaces along Glen Cove Creek. Walking trails, landscaped paths and open seating areas have helped transform the area into a destination for both residents and visitors. The park’s location beside new housing, restaurants and marinas reflects the continued evolution of Glen Cove’s shoreline while maintaining public access to the waterfront. Joggers, cyclists and families regularly use the paths throughout the year, and community events often bring additional activity to the area during warmer months. 22

Welwyn Preserve offers a quieter natural retreat While some parks bustle with activity, Welwyn Preserve provides a more peaceful setting tucked within Glen Cove’s natural landscape. The preserve’s wooded trails and shoreline views create a quiet escape where residents can explore nature close to home. The preserve is also home to the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County, adding historical and educational significance to the property. Visitors often come to walk the trails, observe wildlife or simply enjoy the calm atmosphere away from busier parts of the city. Herald file photo Students from nearby Webb Institute volunteer their time to clear out branches at Welwyn Preserve.

Get your game on Beyond Glen Cove’s larger waterfront destinations, neighborhood parks continue to play an important role every day. At Joe Stanco Park, basketball courts, playgrounds and athletic fields regularly bring together local families and young athletes. Simpkins Park provides additional recreational space for residents, while Big Ralph Park remains a familiar neighborhood gathering spot for outdoor activity and youth sports. City Stadium Park, located near Glen Cove Herald file photo High School, continues to Brian DeMasi, left, and Simranjeet Singh play regular pickleball games at Stanco Park. serve as a central location for athletic events and recreation. From youth leagues to school sports and community gatherings, the park remains closely tied to the city’s active recreational culture. Within a relatively small city, Glen Cove residents can move from waterfront promenades to wooded trails, neighborhood playgrounds and athletic fields in just a few minutes. Together, these parks help shape the character of the community, offering spaces for recreation, tradition and connection throughout the year. 2026 - 2027

layer of international flavor to the city’s offerings. These restaurants contribute to the increasingly global character of downtown dining while maintaining the warm hospitality associated with family-owned businesses. Health-conscious dining has emerged as another significant trend. Cafés and casual eateries focused on fresh ingredients, vegetarian options, smoothies, grain bowls and organic products continue to attract customers seeking lighter meals and wellnessoriented choices. The demand for healthier dining options reflects broader lifestyle trends while also complementing Glen Cove’s active community and waterfront setting. Seafood remains an important element of the local food culture, thanks in part to Glen Cove’s coastal location and maritime history. Many restaurants incorporate fresh fish, shellfish and seasonal seafood specials into their menus, often highlighting East Coast flavors and classic preparations. Waterfront and harbor-adjacent dining experiences are especially popular during warmer months, when outdoor seating and scenic views enhance the appeal of local restaurants. Downtown Glen Cove has become the focal point of much of the city’s culinary growth. Revitalization efforts and new 28

residential developments have helped increase foot traffic and support a steady flow of diners throughout the week. Restaurants, cafés and bars clustered along the downtown corridor create a walkable dining district where visitors can move easily from dinner to dessert, drinks or live entertainment. The local food scene also benefits from its connection to the surrounding North Shore communities. Nearby villages contribute additional dining destinations that complement Glen Cove’s offerings, creating a regional restaurant culture that attracts patrons from across Nassau County. Many residents view dining out as both a social activity and a way to support independently owned businesses that play a central role in community life. Outdoor dining continues to be a major draw, especially during the spring and summer months. Sidewalk tables, patios and garden-style seating areas allow restaurants to capitalize on the city’s scenic atmosphere and encourage a lively street presence. Seasonal dining events, holiday celebrations and food-centered gatherings further strengthen the connection between local restaurants and the broader community. While Glen Cove’s restaurant landscape continues to evolve, its greatest strength may be its ability to combine small-town familiarity with increasingly diverse culinary experiences. Diners can still find the comforting classics that have long defined North Shore dining, but they can also explore international flavors, contemporary presentations and creative menus that reflect changing tastes and new influences. As the city continues to grow and attract new residents, Glen Cove’s food scene appears poised for continued expansion. The combination of tradition, innovation and community support has helped establish the city as a destination where local dining is not simply about meals, but about gathering, celebrating and experiencing the unique character of one of Long Island’s most dynamic waterfront communities.

From fascinating lecture programs, clubs and health services to virtual programming and performances, the library offers a robust schedule throughout the year for patrons of all ages. Participants can discuss challenges they have encountered in their research, learn new approaches from others and discover resources that may help them continue their search. Throughout the year, the library presents virtual lectures exploring science, history, art and culture. One recent example, “Leonardo’s Top Inventions,” featured Dr. Bill Thierfelder, who examined the remarkable innovations and scientific discoveries of Leonardo da Vinci. The presentation offered participants a closer look at the Renaissance visionary's groundbreaking ideas and the lasting influence his work continues to have on engineering, technology and modern scientific thought.
