Nearly 50 members of America Lodge 2245 gathered at Captree Boat Basin, in Babylon, on Aug. 9 before boarding the Captain Eddie B III and setting out on their third annual fishing trip.

Nearly 50 members of America Lodge 2245, of the Order Sons and Daughters of Italy in America, took part in the lodge’s third annual fishing trip out of Captree Boat Basin in Babylon on Aug. 9, casting lines and sharing laughs during a morning on the water. The group, 44 adults and five children, boarded a private charter boat, Captain Eddie B III, at 7 a.m. sharp, and set sail on a five-hour excursion. The morning began with bagels and coffee before lines were cast in search of fluke. “It’s a great day on the water,” Maria Passalacqua, a member of the lodge for nearly five years and its financial secretary, said. “This year we happened to have beautiful, calm seas.” For many, the trip has become more than just about fishing. Phillip Harwood, local librarian, brings movies to life By RENEE DeloRENZo rdelorenzo@liherald.com

Phillip Harwood has spent most of his life immersed in cinema, music and the arts. Now, as an adult reference librarian at the Elmont Memorial Library, he’s sharing that passion with audiences across Long Island. Harwood, 61, will continue his celebrated lecture series this fall with three new installments focusing on actor Jack Lemmon, director John Ford and production studio RKO Pictures’ 1935 films, taking audiences behind the scenes and discussing the history behind

each piece of classic media. A l l t h r e e i n s t a l l m e n t s, beginning in September, are part of the latest chapter in a decades-long journey that has made Harwood a familiar name at libraries, universities and cultural centers. Harwood lives and breathes media, spending much of his free time reading, listening to classical music, and attending plays and concerts. His passion and obsession with film is precisely what led him to lecture. “It was more like an outlet, because I drove family and friends crazy,” Harwood joked. Harwood grew up in West Hempstead, the youngest of

three brothers, in a family where movies and music were a constant presence. His brother Mark once dreamed of becoming a filmmaker, while his late brother Bob leaned toward rock and pop, building a record collection through Columbia Record Club. Mark dabbled in home movies with a Super 8 camera, and Harwood remembers being part of those family productions, such as their re-enactment of “The Legend of Excalibur.” “We were very movie-oriented as a family,” he said. He recalled seeing his first double feature at just five years

old — West Side Story and Yellow Submarine — at the Argo Theater in Elmont. By the time he was eight, he was already developing what he called “old soul” tastes in media, listening to classical music and golden-age radio programs while his classmates preferred Black Sabbath or Pink Floyd. He remembers ask-

ing relatives questions like, “Did you see 42nd Street on television last night?” “They were probably like, ‘What’s wrong with this kid?’” Harwood said, laughing. After graduating from West Hempstead High School in 1982, his fascination with media led him to attend Hofstra UniversiCoNtINuEd oN pAgE 12
