Filmmakers talk about ‘LIIFE’ during annual international expo By JOSEPH D’ALESSANDRO jdalessandro@liherald.com

Long Island International Film Expo has welcomed many f amous enter tainers throughout its history, including Steve Buscemi, John Amos, and Ilene Kirsten. The annual event hosts local and foreign film screenings, informational panels, as well as Q&A sessions with prominent filmmakers and celebrities. On July 9, entertainment industry professionals gathered at Bellmore Movies for the 28th annual LIIFE, where over 132 independent films were available to audiences through to July 13.

Debra Markowitz, Merrick resident and president and chairperson of the Long Island Film and TV Foundation, is also an independent filmmaker who has worked on about 50 independent films. “We are an independent filmmaker with an all-volunteer board, which means that every cent that comes in goes towards running the Long Island International Film Expo,” Markowitz said. “We have panels every year on screenwriting, and we have a live table read of the winning screenplay, which we’ve been doing for a couple of years.” “One thing we’re trying is an assistant ContInuEd on pagE 10
