Babylon FD, EMT’s honored at Village board meeting By CHRISTIE LEIGH BABIRAD cbabirad@liherald.com
Pride and gratitude filled the room as Babylon Fire Department EMTs were honored during a recent Village of Babylon Board of Trustees meeting. “Life is very precious and changes on a dime,” said Mayor Mary Adams during the June 24 meeting. “I know that if something happened to me, I would want the Babylon Fire Department there.” In Babylon Village, she added “we take care and protect each other.” The four responders—Daniel King, Kerry Carlock, Melissa Kalhorn, and former Chief Michael Sasuk—were commended for their lifesaving efforts. In addition to the recognition and gratitude offered by Village officials, the volunteers received a proclamation, signed by New York State Sen. Alexis Weik, for their
response during an emergency call for an unconscious male in October 2024. Upon arrival, firefighters found the patient on the second floor of a residence, without a pulse. Manual CPR was initiated and later transitioned to a mechanical device (Lucas). The patient remained pulseless, prompting the crew to establish an airway and begin ventilations using a bagvalve mask (BVM). Within minutes, the patient regained a carotid pulse and began breathing on his own, though he continued to re-ceive assisted ventilation. He was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital and later discharged to a rehabilitation facility following his cardiac recovery. “We’re put on this earth to make a difference, and you all make such a difference,” Adams said, addressing the responders directly. In other matters, the board approved: CONTINUED ON PAGE 11
Summertime was very much in the air at the Village of Babylon’s opening Summer Block Party, the first of three along Deer Park Avenue this season. Hosted by the Babylon Village Chamber of Commerce, the evening of June 12 was filled with shopping and music, along with lots of food and fun for the entire family. “The block party series is such a blast for everyone involved, and it signals the real start to summer here in the village,” said Tom Vitale, Chamber president. “It offers a little something for everyone, and our hope is that it brings people from all over to support our phenomenal local businesses, making Babylon Village the place to live, work and play.” Live music included the bands Beernutz, When Pigs Fly and O.P. Effect and restaurants including The Villager, Café il Villaggio, Lily Flanagan’s, and the new Babylon Social were open for outdoor and indoor dining. “We came today to try Babylon Social, enjoy the weather, walk around and see friends,” said Kelsey Frohnhoefer, who posed for a picture with her daughter Eefa.
Additionally, Torta Fina Bake Shoppe was outside with pretzels, popcorn, lemonade and hot zeppoles, in addition to the variety of food trucks and extra tables set up for attendees to enjoy their selections or take a pause from all the fun. And there was plenty of fun. For the children there were bounce houses, face painting and vendors selling a variety of toys. In addition, Princesses Tiana and Ariel came to the party as well to talk with their village friends and take pictures. These block parties have apparently become such fun for locals that many attendees have made them an annual tradition, including Brittany Loughlin and her family. “We live right down the block and we love all the stuff they have for the kids; it’s very family friendly,” said Loughlin. “I live in Babylon Village and always come out for the block parties,” said Larissa Woss, who was having a girls’ night there with her friends Stacey and Alex. “The weather is beautiful and we look forward to these block parties every year,” said Chris Baujon, attending with his wife, Lisa, and pup, Chewy. The event also included live painting by Christine Kane CONTINUED ON PAGE 11
