A couple days before the 6th Annual Go Fly a Kite Over Babylon Festival, a street renaming was held in honor of its founder, Diana C. Simulcik, who died last November.

Babylon plans celebrations for America’s 250th anniversary By CHRISTIE LEIGH BABIRAD cbabirad@liherald.com

There will be plenty to celebrate in Babylon Village this summer as officials prepare for America’s 250th anniversary and the 100th anniversary of Village Hall. The first event is scheduled for July 1 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Village Hall, where the village will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the municipal building. Village Hall was dedicated July 5, 1926, alongside Fourth of July celebrations marking the 150th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

“We’ll be planning some festivities here,” Mayor Mary Adams said at the May 12 Board Meeting, adding there is some “pretty neat history” in Babylon Village to commemorate. The celebrations will continue with an America’s 250th anniversary celebration hosted by Babylon American Legion Post 94 on July 12, with a rain date of July 26, from 1 to 5 p.m. in the municipal parking lot behind the American Legion. Proceeds from the event will benefit local veterans organizations. CONTINUED ON PAGE 8

Her son, Garrett Jr., thanked everyone for coming and said what makes the day particularly meaningful is that his mom never did anything for recognition.

“My mom loved this town, she believed in it and she dedicated her life to it,” said Garrett. “As a teacher in North Babylon School District, she put everything she had into her students, she didn’t just teach — she encouraged, challenged and helped people to believe in themselves.” Diana’s brother Frank Pace encouraged the crowd who came out for the street renaming to carry with them the lessons his sister lived by. “Diana did what all teachers would do, she stressed one very simple basic fact: She wanted more than anything to convey to every student something close to her heart — to be better than they were,” said Pace. “Always find something better in yourself, find something better in others, and don’t be complacent — seek accomplishment, seek a commitment.” Town of Babylon Councilman Terence McSweeney, who had Diana as a substitute CONTINUED ON PAGE 8
