Amityville Village Mayor Michael O’Neill speaks at street naming for George M. Lang III.

The sun shined down on the First United Methodist Church grounds in Amityville during the church’s fourth annual Spring Fling fundraiser on May 16. More than a dozen unique vendors sold a variety of items drawing a constant flow of browsers and shoppers throughout the day. “We’ve got beautiful weather and we have a good crowd,” Bill Hurley, a volunteer with the

Bay Village Civic Association, said at the event. Coordinator of the annual event, Steve Price, said there was a rush to reserve vendor tables the last week leading up to the fair because of the rescheduled rain date. Though he noted the event did not have as many vendors as previous years, he said turnout remained strong. “It’s a good mix that we have,” Price said. “I’m happy with everything, and it’s giving back to the church.” Jackie and Steve Perazzo, of Soap Yourself Happy, said they CONTINUED ON PAGE 5

Amityville remembers George M. Lang III By CAROLYN JAMES cjames@liherald.com

For nearly six decades, George M. Lang III dedicated himself to serving the Amityville community through the Village’s fire department. On May 2, village officials, members of the Amityville police and fire departments, friends and neighbors gathered to honor Lang’s legacy by dedicating Oldfield Avenue at Ireland Place as George Lang Memorial Way. Lang, who died Sept. 23, 2025, at age 76, served with the Amityville Fire Department for nearly 60 years. Rising through the ranks, he served as chief of department from 1986 to 1988 and later became an instructor with the Suffolk County Fire Academy. George Fraker, a longtime friend and fellow firefighter, recalled meeting Lang in September 1974.

“Right away, George was a teacher and a leader,” Fraker recalled in a memorial post. “George nominated me for 2nd lieutenant a few short years later, and I had the privilege of watching him rise through the ranks and become Chief of Department.” Babylon Town Councilman Terence McSweeney said the street renaming reflected the impact Lang had on the Amityville community and the fire service. “It was truly an honor to be present for the Village of Amityville’s street renaming ceremony in memory of Ex-Chief George M. Lang III,” McSweeney wrote. “The community came together in a powerful show of respect and remembrance to celebrate George’s extraordinary 58 years of service to the Amityville Fire Department. The dedication in his name stands as a permanent tribute to a life defined by service and selflessness.” Amityville Mayor Michael O’Neill CONTINUED ON PAGE 5
