The coronavirus pandemic has made life challenging for seniors living in long term care facilities and for their families, and the holidays are no different. The staff members of Park Place Senior Living, Morningside Assisted Living and CrestRidge Senior Living have worked hard during the past months to keep residents and staff healthy and safe while also keeping residents engaged in active living. The following socially-distanced activities are cautiously planned for the holidays but subject to change depending on community spread of the virus. We are honored to be serving seniors and their families and we thank our communities for their continued support.
Park Place Senior Apartments in Platteville:
- A Thanksgiving meal for tenants - Holding a Christmas decorating contest for apartment doors
Park Place Assisted Living and Memory Care in Platteville:
- Making “Thankful Trees” for Thanksgiving - A “Blessing Mix” treat bag for each resident - Making tie blankets for the Grant County Holiday Project - A Christmas Sweater Day for staff and residents - Making Christmas cards for loved ones - Making gingerbread houses - Christmas happy hours with holiday drinks like Tom & Jerry’s and Peppermint Patties - A Christmas party including Secret Santa gifts from staff to residents

Christmas at Park Place in Platteville, WI.
Divine Rehabilitation & Nursing in Fennimore:
Planning for the holidays during a pandemic certainly has had its challenges. All of our activities have shifted to individual activities in light of our Covid-19 restrictions. We are fortunate to have a wonderful activity department who have worked hard to maintain our residents’ activity levels. We have themed days of the week that include: - Soulful Sunday - Music Monday - Travel Tuesday - Wednesday’s Wisdom - Thoughtful Thursday - Friday Funday - Savoring Saturday The residents have individual items to use for crafts and other activities. We also have room-toroom dance parties, treats and trivia, piano music at their doorways and happy hour. We have to be very diligent with sanitizing as we go from room to room. For Thanksgiving we made our Gratitude Turkeys and Thanksgiving Story Bracelets. As we head into December, we will be playing our favorite “indoor snowball fight”, holding Reindeer Games, making many crafts, having our door decorating contest, staff adopt-a-resident, sending out Christmas cards and working on our resident-to-family gifts. We are really excited about the gifts from the residents to their families. You’ll have to check out our Facebook page to see what we are doing since we don’t want to spoil the surprise for the families. l

Q & A with Dave Bradley By Lisa Banfield, Grant, Iowa, Lafayette Shopping News, Your Family Platteville, WI - With the holidays fast approaching and winter’s arrival, we reflect on the ways 2020 has been a memorable year. While the holiday season can be a joyous time for many, it can be a challenging time for family members who reside in assisted living facilities and nursing homes. The Covid-19 pandemic has forced everyone to find new ways to stay connected. Dave Bradley and his family from Platteville, WI recently shared their experience. His Mother, Dorothie Bradley, resides at Elderspan: YF: Were you able to visit during quarantine this past spring and summer?
Dave Bradley: We were able to “visit” Mom through the window, but the window remained closed. We had to speak a lot louder for her to hear us. This summer our son played baseball at the ballpark in Platteville which happened to be in the backyard of Elderspan where Mom is residing. In between games we would pick up our lawn chairs and walk through the yard and sit outside her window and visit. For her birthday, we were able to see her without any obstructions. We still wore masks and were socially distant. She was able to be outside in the sun area outside. That was the first time we had seen her “in person” since March. Her birthday was October 10th.
YF: How will things change going into winter? Dave Bradley: Winter will be a challenge as it is getting colder. YF: Any suggestions or ideas for other families who are going through the same thing? How can family members brighten others’ holiday season? Dave Bradley: Our daughter, Katie’s preschool class, sent Mom birthday cards, which she really enjoyed. Families were invited to decorate the windows in addition to sending cards. YF: What is your Mom looking forward to as the holidays approach? Dave Bradley: She always looks forward to seeing our puppy Ellie.
She is fascinated by her and she always brings a smile to Mom’s face. Mom has had a great attitude about everything. She is full of spunk and sass. YF: What are some things you will miss this holiday? Dave Bradley: I will miss my mom’s lemon meringue pie this Thanksgiving. We will all miss not being able to have the family together for holidays. YF: What is one of your favorite holiday memories? Dave Bradley: One of my favorite memories is when Mom would go sledding with the family at the golf course. She would have as much fun as the kids. l
Platteville’s Hometown Christmas Fun By Wayne Wodarz, Executive Director, Platteville Regional Chamber During this time while many Platteville residents choose to shelter at home, there are many opportunities taking place that will ignite the spirit of Christmas in our community, and promote the celebration of family this holiday season. As you check the community calendar, you will see that even in this challenging time there are offerings that can safely take place that will fill you with the warmth of friendship and love. Once again, the Platteville Regional Chamber’s Holiday Committee has organized our holiday happenings to create a “Platteville

Hometown Christmas” with the theme of “A Storybook Christmas.” Not only can you enjoy the Chamber Business Window Decorating Contest depicting this theme, but you can also enjoy the Residential Holiday Tour of Lights by checking out a map depicting all those who choose to decorate. This year in an effort to attract more participation, a non-judged option was offered. Building Platteville will host its 4th Annual Katie’s Garden Winter Wonderland on December 4 from 5-8 pm and December 5 from 5-7 pm with a few modifications for health and safety. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be available and ready for those who attend. Participants are encouraged to wear a mask and practice social distancing when attending. The lights will be illuminated in Katie’s Garden the entire month of December. You will find more offerings on the Hometown Friday Nights which take place on the first three Fridays evenings of December, December 4, 11, and 18. There will be a variety of events presented by many Platteville organizations and businesses to encourage getting outside and enjoying opportunities to patronize our local business partners in a safe manner. The Mining & Rollo Jamison Museums will once again offer the horse-drawn carriage rides on these Friday evenings to enjoy the scenery and holiday lights of our downtown, while learning about some local history. The carriages will take off every 15 minutes between 3 pm and 7:30 pm. Face coverings are requested, and each carriage is

o you ever notice that sometimes the people closest to you test your patience the most? Why is that? Why is it that the ones we love the most are the ones that can irritate us more than anyone else? They say that those people that test our patience the most, they are our biggest teachers in this life. Don’t take everything so personal. Your goal is to just feel good ALL OF THE TIME. That is not, NOT, an over statement. You should feel good 99.9 % of your life. And if you don’t that is on you. Yes, you. You see, we are all on our own journey. We basically chose every trial and every task in this life. So did they. So stop worrying so much about the other person and start focusing on your flame. I spoke in class this week about keeping your flame lit. That should be the most of your concern. YOUR FLAME LIT first!
Even over your children, spouse, parent, significant other. OVER ANYONE. First, you should FEEL GOOD. ♥ You can NOT GIVE SOMETHING YOU DON’T HAVE FOR YOURSELF. You can’t give love, joy , peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith fullness, gentleness if you don’t have it inside you, first. ♥ Stop making other people’s journey about you. If they are bugging you. If they are testing you. If they are even making your skin crawl someday’s. Remember this..... IT AIN’T about you. It is about them. Be thankful for them then let it go. ♥ Today I want you to envision a candle flame inside of you. Anything that starts to draw in negative emotions is a sign that your candle is starting to flicker. Your job, YOUR ONLY JOB, today is to keep that flame lit. If someone’s opinions or a situation or the media or whatever else your focus is on is starting to make that flame flicker YOU MUST release that

6 ways to stick to a holiday budget
Uncle Ike’s Uncle Ike’s
Big y B igHoldida Holiday
The holidays are an exciting, fun and joyful time of year. And for many people, the holidays also are expensive. According to the Motley Fool Company, a financial wellness resource, the average American spent $882.45 on Christmas gifts, food, decorations, travel, and other holidayrelated expenses in 2019. Around 56 percent of gift shoppers set a budget for holiday spending, but only 64 percent stuck to it. In addition, 21.5 percent of respondents went into debt due to holiday shopping. Who doesn’t want to have a super holiday with delicious foods on the table and lots of presents to share with family and friends? While that’s tempting, such a bounty should never result in financial peril. These six strategies can make it easy to establish and stick to a budget this holiday season. ❅ Budget for everything. When working out holiday spending plans, factor in all of the expenses associated with the holidays - not just the most obvious, like gifts. Costs for gas, parking lot fees, greeting cards, postage, travel expenses, and much more should be included in your final number. ❅ Determine how much you can spend. Money for gifts and other holiday expenses should ideally come from your disposable income. Look at your finances in advance of the holiday season and figure out how much extra cash you have for the holidays, and use that figure to determine how much you should spend. Find ways to make up any deficit by curtailing expenses like dining out or entertainment extras. Many people plan to use credit cards to pay now and worry

about the aftermath later. Only use credit cards if you have the money in the bank and can pay off the entire bill when the balance due is in January. ❅ Set a spending limit for individuals. Based on your numbers and how much you plan to spend overall, start allocating money to categories, including gift recipients. Come up with a spending range for each person and stick to it. ❅ Pay in cash as much as possible. It’s easy to know what you’re spending when using cash as opposed to credit. There is some risk with carrying around cash, but that risk may be offset by the benefit of spending only what you can afford to spend. ❅ Track all purchases. Save the receipts and keep a running total of expenditures so you can see how your spending is measuring up to your budget. If necessary, scale back on one category if you’ve tipped the scales in spending on another. ❅ Shop sales and deals. High-end stores may have the impressive tag, but their prices can set you back. Instead, look for comparable gifts at discount stores and other retailers. Also, if you must use a credit card, use one that earns you a cash-back bonus for added savings. A holiday budget is a must to avoid overspending and finding yourself in debt early next year.

Must-haves to achieve a holiday wonderland solstice celebrations and the tradition of bonfires. The Christmas tradition called for burning a portion of the log each evening until Twelfth Night, also known as the Epiphany, which takes place on January 6. ❅ Poinsettias: Poinsettias are a tropical plant that originated in Mexico. Joel Roberts Poinsett was the first Ambassador from the United States to Mexico. He became enamored with the plants, and brought them back to his native South Carolina. An old Mexican
legend suggests a poor girl had nothing to offer baby Jesus at Christmas Eve services, so she picked a handful of weeds and put them at the bottom of the nativity scene. These weeds burst into bright red flowers and became known as “Flores de Noche Buena,” or “Flowers of the Holy Night.” Holiday decorations borrow traditions from all over the world to help establish a festive wonderland. www.metrocreativeconnection.com

The end of the year marks a period of heightened festivity. Come the holiday season, homes and businesses are decorated and everyone seems to have an extra spring in their step. The sight of snowflakes, candy canes, evergreen wreaths, and Christmas trees can elicit nostalgia for happy holidays of the past, as well as excitement for what is yet to come. When it comes to decorating for the holidays, there are certain items that set the scene. ❅ Christmas trees: Germany is credited with starting the modern Christmas tree tradition. It dates back to the 16th century when devout Christians brought trees into their homes and decorated them. German settlers brought Christmas tree traditions to America upon their arrival in Pennsylvania in the 19th century. ❅ Mistletoe: Mistletoe is known as the “kissing plant” and it is customary for couples to kiss while standing beneath the plant, typically hung in doorways and arches. Mistletoe was once hung to drive off evil spirts and ensure fertility. Kissing under the mistletoe was first found associated with the Greek festival of Saturnalia and later with primitive marriage rites. ❅ Lights: Lights are commonly seen during the holiday season.
