Platteville Senior Center Grand Opening Q&A With Platteville Senior Center Staff & Participants Jill Goffinet, Program Coordinator

Q: How long has the Senior Center been closed? A: We closed on Friday, March 13th, 2020. Yes, Friday the 13th! Q: What has been the hardest part of being closed? A: The hardest part of the closure has been not having face-toface interactions with our seniors and worrying about how they would handle the isolation during COVID-19. Q: What are some of the programs the Senior Center has to offer to the seniors in our community? A: We have something for everyone at the Senior Center! Some of our most popular programs are yoga and strength building, live entertainment, and music, reading club, history presentations, educational and health programs featuring various professionals such as: talks from pharmacists, nutritionist, dieticians, and the consumer protection agency. We have also provided blood pressure and blood sugar checks. Favorite activities of the seniors include card games (Bridge, Cribbage, Euchre and Hand and

Foot, etc.), Bingo, dominoes, auctions, card making, crafts, painting, and cooking classes. We also have done a variety of themed parties such as: Pizza and Euchre, Skunk Euchre, holiday related, a “90+ Years Young” brunch and more. At the Senior Center, we also offer the opportunity for intergenerational activities with the Head Start program, which is conveniently also located in our building. We have been lucky enough to say that Alice in Dairyland has made an appearance. We have hosted a blood drive and have an exercise room with plenty of equipment to help our seniors stay active. We have taken day trips to theaters, Amana Colony, and on a Luncheon Boat Cruise. Q: What is being planned for the Grand Opening? A: We are considering the whole month of July our “Grand Opening” and have many activities planned all month. With being closed for such a long period of time, we are encouraging everyone over 50 to come see what we have to offer. We have put a great deal of time and effort into changing our look with new furniture and curtains and a fresh coat of paint. We have also added some new exercise equipment. We like to think of these changes as a “fresh start” for the Senior Center. Some of the many activities that may interest participants include playing cards, free Bingo with prizes, card making, an Alzheimer’s support group, educational programs, a ventriloquist, a pizza and Euchre tournament, music with Ken Killian and Terry Dillon and Vesperman Ice Cream Truck! We will be “Celebrating our Seniors”

at the 8th annual Senior Picnic, which will be held on Wednesday, August 18th at Community Evangelical Free Church. Details on all our upcoming events can be found on: The City website, Facebook, monthly Senior Event Calendar and Meal Menu in the Platteville Journal or Email peak@ platteville.org to sign up for our monthly e-newsletter.

Annie Schwingle Q: What was the hardest thing about not being able to come to the Senior Center during Covid?

Q: What are you most excited for with the Senior Center reopening? A: Upon the re-opening of the Senior Center, I am most excited to see what fun, exciting things Jill and Jon will add to the calendar. I am looking forward to sharing the delicious meals with others, discussing our troubles and joys with others who understand and care, and most of all I am looking forward to socializing with good friends again. Oh, and of course, the domino game!

Marv Packer

A: The Platteville Senior Center is home to many loving, decent, kind people. When I started going there with a good friend I was welcomed with such kindness and acceptance that I felt like I had known these people forever. I have made many good friends there and have grown to love and care about them. I missed seeing them in person although I did stay in touch with some of them through phone calls. I missed playing dominoes every Wednesday, bingo parties, crafts and the excellent programs that are offered. Companionship and socialization are important to senior citizens, especially those living alone. I feel I can say that those things were deeply missed by all those who attend the Platteville Senior Center.

Q: What was the hardest thing about not being able to come to the Senior Center during Covid? A: My wife Sally and I were new residents of Platteville and had established the Senior Center as our center of social relationships in the new area. Losing that was a blow then as Sally’s health started failing, we really missed the closeness of the many new friends we had made. Q: What are you most excited for with the Senior Center reopening? A: Now that I have been alone for five months, I really needed to start playing cards, domino’s and just visiting and catching up with other people. The Senior Center provided this. 

PSA: Declare Your Financial Freedom TBA: June 28, 2021 SUBMITTED BY BOB ALLBRIGHT Independence Day is almost here. It’s important to recognize all the liberties we enjoy in this country, but you may still need to work at one particular type of freedom – and that’s financial freedom. How can you achieve it? First, contribute as much as you can afford to your retirement accounts, such as your 401(k) or another employer-sponsored plan. And when your salary goes up, increase the

amount you put into your 401(k) each year. Beyond your 401(k), you may also be able to contribute to an IRA, which also offers tax benefits, plus a wide array of investment choices.

may want to consider private coverage.

Another way to help preserve your financial independence is to protect your income, which could be jeopardized if you become ill or injured. Your employer may offer disability insurance, but if it’s not enough, you

Here’s one more suggestion: Guard yourself against the high costs of long-term care, such as an extended nursing home stay. A financial professional can suggest an appropriate strategy. By addressing these areas, you can go a long way toward attaining your financial independence.

Ways to Cut Costs During Retirement METRO CREATIVE SERVICES The average person will spend more than 50 years in the employment sector. As retirement draws closer, many professionals begin to daydream about giving up the commute and having more time to pursue their personal interests. Even if planning for retirement has been many years in the making, it can take some time for a person to become acclimated to having less income. According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, “older households,” which are defined as those run by someone age 65 and older, spent an average of $45,756 in 2016, or roughly $3,800 a month. That’s roughly $1,000 less than the monthly average spent by typical American households. Housing, transportation, health care, and food are some of the biggest bills retirees will have to account for. Aiming to have savings in addition to any other retirement income or government subsidy coming in to cover that amount is a step in the right direction. Retirees can make their money go

further if they take inventory of their spending and make some cuts where possible. • Know where your money is going. It‘s impossible to save without knowing what your expenses are each month. Many people are surprised to learn how much little things add up over the course of a month. For example, spending $4 for a take-out coffee each day can quickly become an expensive luxury. Add all expenses and see where you can trim, especially if there’s a deficit each month. • Consider extra health care. In the United States, Medicare participants can choose Medicare Supplement Insurance plans to help reduce out-of-pocket health care costs. Medicare Parts A and B only cover some of your health care costs. Supplemental insurance can cover some of the costs not covered by original medicare, like copayments, deductibles and coinsurance, according to AARP.

• Pare down on possessions. Take inventory of what you have and scale back where possible. If you are no longer commuting to work, you may be able to become a onecar household. Downsizing your residence can help seniors avoid spending too much of their retirement time and money maintaining their homes. • Take advantage of senior discounts. Take advantage of the many discounts that are offered to seniors. Retirees can usually save on restaurants, travel, groceries, and much more by simply shopping on specific days or verifying their age

when checking out. • Purchase less expensive life insurance. According Cheapism, a site that advises consumers about how to be more frugal, the chief purpose of life insurance is to replace income to ensure the financial security of dependents in the event of death. Retirees may have no dependents and little income. Therefore, a large life insurance policy may not be necessary, especially if you’ve already set aside funds to cover funeral costs. • Pay off a mortgage. Housing is many people’s most substantial expense.
