Making Gratitude a Priority this November By: Megan Kussmaul, DC
It is hard to believe that we are approaching on another November. It seems like I was just sitting down to write a wellness column for November in 2020, but here we are again. In thinking about a topic for this coming month, Thanksgiving is obviously forefront in my mind. While it is knowingly a time to be with family, giving thanks for all that we have, I challenge you to take it a step further. I want you to focus the whole month on gratitude and dedicate it to being thankful for everything positive in your life. Here are some ways to do just that if this is a new practice for you or a refresher if you have been making this a habit for some time. - The obvious one: A gratitude journal. I challenge you every day in November to wake up and write down 5 things you are grateful or thankful for in a journal. Now there are specific gratitude journals on the market for this that you can use, or a simple blank journal or sheet of paper will do just fine. I personally have several journals that I write in, but I have one specific to gratitude. Find what brings you joy each morning and all of the positives in your life. Jot it down. Then notice how you feel the more that you complete this task and make it a daily habit. - Before you even get out of bed, think in your head or say out loud 5 things for which you are grateful. Starting your day on a happy and positive note by being thankful for all of the good things in your life can be a life
changer. We are constantly bombarded with enough negativity in this world that this simple act of starting out your day with gratitude can shift the energy flow in the day to a more positive and fulfilling one - While on a walk, make note of all of the beautiful things you see. Find gratitude in nature. Try to leave all technology at home or music on pause. Notice the sounds, sights, and smells by activating your five senses in any way you know how. Make this time for yourself and see how it makes you feel. Notice what comes up in your mind and heart. Acknowledge it, and be thankful for it. - Try and make this a family event. Get creative. I have seen some ideas where everyone writes something they are grateful for on a pumpkin. Maybe have each family member write down on a slip of paper something they are thankful for, place it in a jar, and then take turns each night reading them out loud and discussing why they chose what they did. The list could always go on, so choose your own path to gratitude. If you choose to make this a daily habit, it has been shown to improve many areas in your life. We all function better when we are happy and can find joy and contentment with what we have. Let’s all make this a “November to Remember” by making it a priority to find what makes us grateful and thankful all month long. Let me know how it goes!
Don’t Let Covid-19 Delay Cancer Screenings By: Crossing Rivers Health
Surviving cancer is much more likely with early detection. Yet, many have delayed important cancer screenings as Covid-19 spread throughout communities. Staying up to date on cancer screenings is important for long-term health. For breast cancer, a mammogram is a proven tool in lowering your risk of dying. Pushing back an annual screening by six months or a year can allow a cancer that could have been caught early to progress – which may mean it can be more difficult to treat. Tim Clark, Medical Imaging Director at Crossing Rivers Health, says, “We know certain cancers have been missed due to cancelled screening exams during Covid lockdowns. Nobody is certain as of yet what the long term effects of those missed early stage cancers but we do know that detecting cancers at an early stage are much more treatable, especially the more aggressive type of cancers that can be seen in the breast.” Nearly 9.4 million screening exams for cancer were not done during the length of the pandemic which included breast, colon, and prostate exams. Mammography guideline recommen-
dations include having a baseline mammogram by age 40 and an annual mammogram age 40 and above. For women 30 an older with a first degree relative with premenopausal breast cancer, begin screening 10 years earlier than the age at the relative’s diagnosis. Crossing Rivers Health offers digital breast tomosynthesis, also known as 3D mammography, which captures multiple images in seconds, providing approximately 120 images of each breast. “The technology has been revolutionary in the detection of breast cancer,” explains Clark.
