Definitions of Terminolgy:

Basin Size: Length in a straight line from the mouth of a stream to the farthest point on the drainage divide of its basin. Confluence: the junction of two rivers, especially rivers of approximately equal width. Retention/Replacement Time: The amount of time it would take for the lake to get rid of pollutants. Mouth: The place where a river enters a lake, larger river, or the ocean ft³/s: Cubic Feet per second. 1 cubic foot per second = 7.4805 gallons flowing by a particular point in 1 second. mi²: square mile. One square mile is an area equal to the area of a square with sides of length one mile. ga/sec: Gallons Per second. Used as a measurement of waterflow speed for waterfalls Cataract Waterfall: A cataract waterfall occurs when a large amount of fast-moving water falls over a cliff. This type is categorized based on sheer size and power. Tiered Waterfall: A series of waterfalls one after another of roughly the same size each with its own sunken plunge pool. Plunge Waterfall: A plunge waterfall occurs when fast-moving water hurtles off the edge of a cliff, falling vertically in an uninterrupted sheet. Cascade Waterfall: Cascade waterfalls, with the continuous tumbling of water over rocks, do not have plunge pools at each level like a multi-step waterfall does. Fan Waterfall: The stream of water starts out thin at the top of the fall but spreads out horizontally as it tumbles down the rock face, all the time maintaining contact with the bedrock. Oligotrophic Lake: Relatively low in plant nutrients and containing abundant oxygen in the deeper parts.
