Golds for Grace
Many times in life, a person has just one chance to have a “golden” day, most often for their birthday. Not Verona Area/Mount Horeb senior Grace Bennin. She had a banner day celebrating after winning three state championships Saturday at the WIAA Division 2 state meet at the University of Wisconsin’s Natatorium. Bennin captured gold medals in the 100-yard breaststroke, 200 individual medley and 200 medley relay. She set a Division 1 state record in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.65 seconds). It marks the third straight year she won a state title in the 100 breaststroke. She helped the Wildcats take fourth as a team at state. Bennin, a University of Minnesota recruit, now owns two school records. She broke Beata Nelson’s school record in the 200 IM Saturday with a time of 1 minute, 59.93 seconds. She also has the school record in the breaststroke.
