Senior Aidan Updegrove will go down as the best long-distance swimmer in the history of the Verona Area/Mount Horeb boys swimming team’s history after winning three medals and setting two school records at the WIAA DIvision 1 state meet Saturday, Feb. 16 at the UW Natatorium. Updegrove finished fourth in the 500-yard freestyle in a school-record 4 minutes, 44.07 seconds. He broke Alex Mathson’s record from 2013. Updegrove was also part of the Wildcats’ sixthplace finish in the 200 free relay and sixth-place effort in the 400 free relay. He took ninth in the 200 free (1:44.76)) and broke his previous school record. The performances by Updegrove helped V/MH take ninth in the state meet with 95 points. Madison West repeated as the state champion (314) and Middleton was the runner-up (257).
