ANALEE DORIS BUTIKOFER
February 24, 2020 Analee Doris Butikofer was born on January 1st, 2017 in Atlanta, GA and placed in her parents’ loving arms on March 1st, 2017. After a short series of minor illnesses, her body simply couldn’t hold on anymore. She ran into Jesus’ arms on February 24th, 2020 at 5:26pm. Her birth and life were full of challenges, pain, and struggle, but she was a fighter and achieved far more than doctors imagined she would. Analee never talked, but she communicated well with her family, particularly her mommy. She could not walk, run, or play, but she had a rich life anyway and filled a crucial role in her world. The void she leaves is huge, and the grief defies words. Our comfort as her family is that we know SHE IS WITH JESUS in Heaven and has a PERFECT BODY now. There will be no more needles, suctioning, nebulizer treatments, tube feedings, belly aches, ER visits, or hospital stays. All is GLORY! Our family that’s left--Reuben, Judi, Kinza, and Kevin--eagerly await joining her someday, and it is our desire that Analee’s life inspires everyone to search their hearts and make sure they are ready to meet Jesus.

February 25, 2020 Frederick “Fred” E. Silvers, age 76, of Richland Center died Tuesday, February 25, 2020, at Schmitt Woodland Hills. He was born on August 24, 1943 the son of Dick and Beatrice (Markin) Silvers in Racine, WI. On June 6, 1963, he married Rosemary Agnes Dombeck. Fred was an avid woodworker. He enjoyed crafting furniture, toys, and keepsakes for family and friends. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially his trips hunting elk out west. He was known for his sense of humor and always had a joke to share. He was the king of the “Big Fish Story”. Fred shared a special bond with his grandson, Micah. When Fred became unable to go on adventures their favorite pastime was watching cartoons & eating ice cream. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary; five brothers and three sisters. A Mass of Christian Burial was conducted at 11:30 A.M. on Monday, March 2, 2020, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Reedsburg with Father David Carrano officiating. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation was held from 2:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. on Sunday at the Hoof Funeral Home in Reedsburg and after 10:30 A.M. on Monday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Reedsburg Food Pantry would be appreciated. The Hoof Funeral Home is serving the family.

vegetable production systems that often rely on irrigation. “Precipitation records are more readily available over broader regions than groundwater records, and precipitation data can fill gaps at very low cost.” The new approach also got negative confirmation. The wells showing the relationship were fairly shallow, with good connections to the surface. In southeast Wisconsin, where a layer of shale separates the upper and lower aquifers, the algorithm does not work, Smail says. “That helps confirm that the model predicts what we hoped to predict.” Perhaps the most curious aspect of the study was what the model did not explain. The material in the aquifer – whether porous sand and gravel or more resistant deep sandstone — did not affect the discovered relationship. “It’s counter-intuitive and something future research could help us better understand,” says Smail, who also works in the Bureau of Drinking Water and Groundwater at the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. However, the curiosity carries a benefit, since it’s apparently not necessary to know much about an aquifer in order to see how precipitation is affecting water levels. Changes in land cover and regional water extraction are difficult to predict and document, so having an algorithm that looks only at the commonly tracked precipitation levels can be a big advantage, says Smail. In their study, Smail and colleagues wrote that

The study looked at long-term data on groundwater levels for 90 Wisconsin wells, taken from the U.S. Geologic Survey and the Wisconsin Geologic and Natural History Survey. Weather history came from the National Weather Service. Using the new system, 54 percent of the wells had moderate to high correlation with precipitation and groundwater level, says Smail, a significant improvement over previous efforts. The need to understand how weather affects groundwater in Wisconsin is underscored by record summer deluges and groundwater high enough to harm farms, homes and roads. In many parts of the state, groundwater is at record levels; evident in fields that remain flooded month after month. This stands in dramatic contrast to widespread concerns seven to 10 years ago about low water and “dying lakes.” Although rainfall and snow obviously contribute most or all water to an aquifer, “efforts to make this linkage have been problematic,” says Smail. “Rainfall is variable; it can be wet one year and dry the next, so rainfall numbers do not directly tell us what we need to know. But the water levels in aquifers levels have a memory. We just needed to figure out long that memory is.” “The new part here is the ability to use precipitation as a proxy – as a stand-in — instead of going out and measuring groundwater level,” says study co-author Jed Colquhoun, a professor of horticulture, who focuses on fruit and

(University of Wisconsin-Madison College of Agricultural and Life Sciences) After analyzing decades of data on groundwater and precipitation, scientists at University of Wisconsin– Madison and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources have linked precipitation trends to groundwater levels in monitoring wells in Wisconsin. The connection seems obvious: more rain means higher water levels. The traditional starting point for understanding water level variation requires knowledge of factors such as aquifer properties, land use, and the amount of water pumped out. However, in the Journal of Hydrology on Nov. 15, 2019, Robert Smail, a recent UW–Madison Ph.D., revealed a method to connect precipitation records and changes in the groundwater level that focused solely on two numbers: • precipitation over the past month, and • average monthly rainfall over the past 60 months. The new analysis is all about context, Smail says. “If we are interested in how groundwater levels respond to rainfall,” he says, “we don’t care what the average monthly rainfall has been in Wisconsin over the past 100 years. Instead, we found that it’s best to compare last month to the average over the previous five years.” Thus if the monthly average over the past five years was 2.5 inches, a 3-inch month would be expected to raise the groundwater, while a 2-inch month would lower it.

These sensors help farmers know the best possible time to plant seeds so they can reach their full potential. That improves both the efficiency of modern farms as well as their output. The NIFA also notes that agricultural tech-
nology has reduced waste. For instance, thanks to agricultural technology, farmers no longer have to apply water, fertilizers and pesticides uniformly across entire fields. Technology has shown that farmers can simply target specific areas or even treat individual plants differently. That saves time and allows farmers to use only minimal quantities of water, fertilizer and pesticides. In addition, according to the NIFA, em-
ploying agricultural technology in this fashion leads to higher crop productivity and reduces runoff of chemicals into rivers and groundwater, thereby reducing the farm’s impact on local ecosystems. Celebrate Agriculture 7 Ag-Focused Ways to Get Involved
(University of Wisconsin-Madison College of Agricultural and Life Sciences) Sustainable dairy project finds ways to lower emissions while increasing profits In 2013, the $10 million Dairy Coordinated Agricultural Project, or Dairy CAP, set out to assess the greenhouse gas contributions of the dairy industry and help farmers meet the industry’s goal to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 25% by 2020 while maintaining or boosting profitability. Six years later, the project has wrapped up with a set of promising solutions. The Dairy CAP’s recommendations center on efficiency. Researchers found that a combination of improved animal husbandry, different feeding strategies, and better manure management could allow dairies to cut emissions by a third to almost half while producing more milk with less feed to ensure economic feasibility. CALS professors Matt Ruark and Molly Jahn led the Dairy CAP in collaboration with seven other universities, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (which funded the project), and the Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy, an industry-supported research group. The team issued its final report earlier this year. “I think there are three big takeaways,” says Ruark, a professor of soil science. “One, efficiency in milk production leads to reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Two, reductions in greenhouse gases can be achieved along with reductions in nutrient loss and increases
in economic returns. And three, dairy-based cropping systems can be adaptive to climate change.” Milk production emits greenhouse gases from three primary sources: methane produced in the rumen; emissions during manure storage and spreading; and the emissions associated with growing crops for feed. Methane — an inevitable byproduct of ruminant digestion — is 25 times more effective than carbon dioxide at trapping heat in the atmosphere. Nitrous oxide, derived from manure and fertilizer applications, is 10 times more potent than methane. The Dairy CAP team tracked emissions at each of these stages. Experimental modifications were followed throughout their entire life cycle to identify how, for example, feed changes affected not just the production of milk and methane but manure emissions and the growth of crops fertilized with that manure. Experiments were conducted at the UW– Madison Dairy Cattle Center, the UW Arlington Agricultural Research Station, the USDA Dairy Forage Research Center in Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin, and at partner institutions. The experiments helped refine feed-to-manure computer models of emissions and economic returns for both 150- and 1,500-cow dairies. The benefits from using the best cow genetics, feed practices, manure handling, and cropping systems added up quickly. “If we implement these best management

practices, we’re going to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 36% [for a 1,500-cow dairy],” says Ruark. “At the same time, we’re going to reduce nitrogen losses to groundwater by 41%. We’re going to reduce phosphorus losses to surface water by 52%. And we’re going to increase net return 20%.” Similar practices could drop greenhouse gas emissions by 46% for 150-cow dairies, the researchers found. One of the most effective ways to cut emissions is to use an anaerobic digester to convert the methane from stored manure into carbon dioxide. While this is an expensive solution, the costs could be partly offset by generating and selling electricity from burning the methane or converting it into compressed natural gas to fuel cars and trucks. Yet changing practices to cut emissions could be a tough sell as dairies continue to struggle through a years-long slump in milk prices, says agricultural and applied economics professor Mark Stephenson. An expert in dairy economics, Stephenson helped create a tool to evaluate alternative manure management practices for the Dairy CAP. Low milk prices are a major reason why 800 Wisconsin dairy farms have closed since August 2018. “One of the legs of sustainability is economic,” says Stephenson. “Just because you want to reduce greenhouse gases doesn’t mean that you can afford to employ the best practices. These best practices can reduce costs for farmers and emissions from milk production. Researchers also assembled recommendations to help farmers adapt to a warming climate, such as ways to predict the ventilation needed in a barn to keep cows cool. The project’s findings have been distributed through fact sheets published by the Division of Extension and on the Virtual Farm website hosted by The Pennsylvania State University. The site demonstrates the typical operations of both large and small dairy farms and ways that dairies can reduce their impact on the environment. The Dairy CAP also looked toward the next generation. Project leaders partnered with Milwaukee’s Vincent High School to help revive its original design as an agricultural school. The grant paid for agriculture outreach specialist Gail Kraus to join the school’s staff and help design a new agricultural curriculum with six specialties. “I had come to understand that to really enrich our campus environment we had to be active at the secondary and elementary level to open pipelines of students for college,” says Jahn, who initiated a relationship with the school eight years ago. The agricultural revival grew from teachers interested in teaching aquaculture and developed to include courses in the animal and plant sciences. Many cities have passed laws legalizing backyard chickens, encouraging many to raise chickens as a rewarding hobby. One of the biggest benefits to raising backyard chickens is that their eggs are fresher and often tastier than storebought varieties. Hens can lay one egg per day. Multiply that egg per hen, and breakfast is always available. Another benefit to chickens is they produce a natural fertilizer that can be used in gardens. “The Old Farmer’s Almanac” says chicken manure can be composted, aged and eventually added to the garden. In about six months, a person will accumulate about one cubic foot of manure per chicken. Egg shells and other compostable material can be added to create an even richer formula. People who are frequently away from home should reconsider chickens. Chickens also are prone to worms, parasites and lice. They need to have rear feathers trimmed to stay clean and sanitary, and they will require an area where they can “dust” and self-groom. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises not to cuddle and kiss chickens like pets because they can carry salmonella. In an era of growing uncertainty about commercially produced food, many agriculturally inclined people are raising livestock right on their properties, and small-scale pig farms can be a successful venture. Despite pigs’ reputation as dirty animals, the animal resource PetHelpful indicates they are actually one of the cleanest farm animals. Pigs tend to wallow in mud only if they do not have proper shade and a clean, steady water supply to regulate their body temperature. Furthermore, giving pigs plenty of space to roam will enable them to keep dry, clean and cool. Pens should be large enough so pigs can sleep and eat on one end and use the other end for soiling. Pigs also are intelligent animals that will adapt to routine. This means it may be easier to care for pigs than some other farm animals. Even though pigs can grow to be quite large, they do not need to live on an expansive farm. Many pigs can live quite well on an acre if their pen and foraging areas are rotated periodically. Data from the past 50 years shows that today’s pig farms use less land and other resources to produce one pound of pork, according to the National Pork Board. Therefore, raising pigs can be a sustainable undertaking.
According to Mother Earth News, when selecting pig breeds for a pig farm startup, these are popular as lean-meat producers and shouldn’t be hard to find: Yorkshire, DurocJersey, Berkshire, Hampshire, Poland-China, Chester White and Tamworth. Choose sows (females) or barrows (castrated males) for the best-tasting meat. Also, keep in mind that pigs are social animals, and even though the average family will do just fine with one pig’s worth of meat, pigs do better if raised in pairs or more. Pigs need a varied diet to thrive. Diets should include grain, milk, fruits, vegetables, and
greens from pasture. Experts suggest novices ask a veterinarian or another pig farmer about feeding. A family garden or bartering with other families nearby for food materials can keep feeding costs minimal. Many pigs can be butchered by the age of six or seven months. After pigs reach that age, they begin to grow quite large and become a much larger investment of time and money. Pig farming can be a worthwhile venture.
