Explore the lead and zinc mining history that founded the community and led to the establishment of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, the World’s Largest ‘M’ and The Mining and Rollo Jamison Museums. Access all Platteville has to offer for outdoor recreation, including hiking and biking the 3-mile paved and lit David Canny Rountree Branch Trail, camping in Mound View Park, trout fishing the Rountree Branch and canoeing and kayaking the Platte River. The community is also connected to regional ATV routes with ATV/UTV access through Platteville. The city’s many parks offer a variety of recreation options, from sand volleyball to batting cages, horseshoes to skateboarding. And if you’re looking to relax, Platteville has 15 little free libraries scattered throughout the city with free books for reading in the park or for taking home to enjoy. With a population of approximately 12,000, Platteville offers great options for lodging, dining, shopping and entertainment. Take a stroll through the historic downtown Platteville and look for artistic bike racks and two historic murals along Main Street. In the downtown, City Park also features the Veterans Honor Roll Memorial, a great tribute to the community’s veterans. ■ Veterans Honor Roll Memorial
✦ On July 4, 2012, the Veterans Honor Roll Memorial was dedicated in City Park. The names of more than 3,600 area veterans are forever etched in granite on this tribute. It stands guard to the memorial erected in 1948 to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. The annual Memorial Day program begins in the City Hall, which was dedicated as the Civic Memorial Building, and ends at the memorial in City Park. All 4th of July patriotic programs are held at the Veterans Honor Roll memorial. ✦ Located in City Park - the location for many festivals and Concerts in the Park.

■ Rountree Branch Trail and Mound View State Trail
With more than 10 miles of non-motorized public trails, Platteville hosts a scenic route for walking, running and biking. The trail winds along the Rountree Branch and features a trout stream with several places to fish from the shores. Following the stream, the trail takes you from UW-Platteville to Mound View Park or the shopping district along Progressive Parkway and connects Platteville to Belmont on the new Mound View State Trail, where one can access 4,500 miles of state trails. ■ The ‘M’
The World’s Largest ‘M’ is constructed of limestone and weighs approximately 400 tons. Constructed in 1937, the giant ‘M’ measures 241 feet by 241 feet. The letter represents the first mining school in the United States. Visitors to the area can climb the 266 steps beside the ‘M’ and enjoy a panoramic view of the tri-state area. XX heading toward Belmont, and turn left onto West Mound Road. Go straight at three stop signs and turn right into the parking lot. You can also take Broadway Street north, which turns into Co. B at the city limits, and turn left onto West Mound Road, then go straight at the stop sign and take a right at the ‘M’.

History “Love Where You Come From” With 60 buildings of historic significance, a stroll down Main Street helps one appreciate Platteville’s strong sense of history. Platteville began as Platte River Diggings in 1822. Once home to the Ho-Chunk Indians, Platteville was settled in the mid-1820s by American and European miners who were attracted by rich lead deposits. After the discovery of lead in the area, the region’s economy began to flourish.
■ Rountree Hall
✦ Rountree Hall was the site of the original Platteville Academy, which existed from 1842-1866 when it was converted to a State Normal School. ✦ General Ulysses S. Grant dedicated the south wing of Rountree Hall in 1868. ✦ It also housed the Wisconsin Mining Trade School, which was responsible for the creation of the big “M” on the mound three miles east of Platteville. ✦ No tours are available for Rountree Hall. It is located at the corner of Main and Elm streets.

The World’s Largest ‘M’ is constructed of limestone and weighs approximately 400 tons. Constructed in 1937, the giant ‘M’ measures 241 feet by 241 feet. The letter represents the first mining school in the United States. Visitors to the area can climb the steps beside the ‘M’ and enjoy a panoramic view of the tri-state area. To get to the ‘M’, take Business Hwy. 151, which turns into Co. XX heading toward Belmont, and turn left onto West Mound Road. Go straight at three stop signs and turn right into the parking lot. You can also take Broadway Street north, which turns into Co. B at the city limits, and turn left onto West Mound Road, then go straight at the e stop sign and take a right at the M. ystone on

With more than 10 miles of non-motorized public trails, Platteville hosts a scenic route for walking, running and biking. The trail winds along the Rountree Branch and features a trout stream with several places to fish from the shores. Following the stream, the trail takes B you from UW-Platteville to Mound View Park or the H shopping CT district along Progressive Parkway and connects Platteville to Belmont on the new Mound View State Trail, where one can access 4,500 miles of state trails.
