Q. Do I need a dog trainer, or someone with behavioral expertise? A. When most people think of working with their dogs to reach goals or resolve problems, they

think of it as “training.” But there is a distinction between “training” and “behavior modification” and understanding the difference is crucial. Training is about teaching a dog how to do things, such as to sit, lie down or come when called on cue. Behavior modification is about changing the way a dog feels about things, such as fear of strangers, over-reactive behavior on leash walks, fear of fireworks, thunderstorms or separation anxiety. The skill set required for teaching “obedience” or manners training is distinct from the knowledge and skills require for behavior modification. Unfortunately, too many unqualified trainers take behavioral cases for which they are neither educated or experienced in resolving. The result can be tragic for dogs and their stewards. I recommend pet owners ask specific questions about the professional’s education, training and experience regarding behavioral problems. What is their understanding of learning theory and applied psychology? Do they know the difference between operant and respondent conditioning? If they give fuzzy answers or talk about dominance, find another professional.

Q: Why does my dog eat grass when she goes outside - is she sick? A: How often do we see our furry friends bound through the grass or roll around on the lush greenery as if nothing greater exists, only to then watch them eat it by the mouthful? It’s a common sight, but is it symptomatic of an unseen problem? Something most doctors would agree on: nobody knows for sure why dogs eat grass. Many theories exist yet, frustratingly, not enough research has been done. Are they settling an upset stomach or trying to induce vomiting? Maybe. Is there some instinctual urge to satisfy a nutrient requirement their wild ancestors lacked? Could be. Perhaps they’re lapping up the dew on a humid morning? It may even be as simple as dogs eat grass because they like the way it tastes and feels in their mouth. A few blades of grass here and there shouldn’t be a problem and likely isn’t symptomatic of something worse. Do try and prevent them from eating too much grass, and keep them out of areas with posted fertilizer or pesticide application signs as these chemicals may be toxic to your dogs in high enough doses. Monitor your dog when she’s outside and if you notice any unusual behavior don’t hesitate to call your local veterinarian.
