Q. : My pet is supposed to have some bloodwork and other lab tests done at his upcoming vet visit. Should I skip any medications the day of? I’m worried they will interfere with testing.
A. Unless your vet has specifically told you to stop any medications for this appointment, continue giving them to your pet as prescribed.
There are many types of blood tests and laboratory tests that can be run from the various samples collected in a vet clinic (e.g. blood, urine, feces), and some of the results can be more affected than others. The best thing you can do is keep careful track of any and all medications and supplements your pet might be taking and bring this information with you to the vet visit (including preventatives for fleas, ticks, and heartworm). This will allow your vet to make their most accurate interpretation of any test results and how those fit into the overall picture of your pet’s health. Preventative bloodwork and lab tests not only monitor for abnormalities, they also show whether the therapeutic effects of certain medications are working and within the ranges they need to be. It’s important to note that some tests are a little more specialized and may be erroneously affected if proper sampling conditions aren’t met, but these aren’t usually the first steps taken in general preventative care. If your vet determines your pet needs specialized testing done they will work with you to set up an appropriate appointment and provide you with all information and preparatory steps (fasting, withholding medication, etc.) necessary to ensure accurate sampling. With questions about bloodwork or what materials you might need for upcoming appointments, never hesitate to call your local veterinarian.
