Q. What are Heartworms? A. Heartworms are a parasite that infect the heart and blood vessels of dogs and cats. The
number of infected pets in the Midwest is on a dramatic increase. In the early stage of the worm’s lifecycle, microfilaria are transmitted into the pet via mosquito bites. As the worms become adults, they grow to large sizes inside the heart and vessels, leading to heart failure and other complications. Killing adult worms already in the heart can be very risky for your pet. It is much safer to prevent infection by giving a monthly preventative medicine that kills the microfilaria found in the blood stream before they can become adults. A simple blood test for your dogs and cats each year will screen for infections of heartworm disease.

Q. Should I punish my dog for growling? A. No. Growling is communication and is often preceded by other physical body language
and/or vocalizations in which a dog is expressing their discomfort, anxiety, annoyance or fear. In short, the dog is asking us to stop doing whatever was happening in the environment prior to the growl. Punishing a dog for growling may convince the dog to stop giving warnings and go straight to biting when the pressure becomes unbearable. It also adds another layer of stress and fear to the negative association the dog already had with whatever triggered the growl. It is far better to assess what motivated the dog to growl and resolve that, in which case the dog will not have to growl in the first place. For example, the stranger who hears the growl and stops reaching to pet the dog and then calmly moves further away will resolve the dog’s fear in that moment. In the long term working with a professional certified behavior consultant could resolve the underlying anxiety or fear.

Public Works General Laborer
The City of Evansville is accepting applications for the position of General Laborer within the Public Works Department. This is a full-time position which involves the general duties necessary to maintain the streets, sanitary sewers, storm sewers, public buildings, parks and other public facilities. While equipment operation experience is preferred other relevant experience can come from many different career paths including but not limited to mechanical, agricultural, landscaping, construction or any labor that involves the combination of physical work and mental problem solving/ planning. Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license and the ability to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within six months. Must be able to lift 50 pounds routinely and up to 100 pounds occasionally. Must be willing to work in all types of weather and be available on-call on a schedule rotation and during snow storms. A can-do attitude, ability to work as a team, great customer service, and desire to develop professionally is also must. A DMV background check, drug test and a pre-employment physical exam will be required. Starting pay is $22.59 to $24.35 an hour depending on experience with great benefits including paid vacation, sick time, paid holidays, health care, dental, life insurance, and retirement.
